00:00Hey, Gemma, I have terrible news. I just got off the phone with my mother.
00:07Oh, no. Did something happen to her?
00:08Worse. She's coming for Thanksgiving.
00:11What? I thought she was going to your Aunt Gail's.
00:14Well, yeah, apparently they got into a fight over which is better, NCIS or NCIS Los Angeles.
00:21And now she's coming here instead.
00:23But why is it bad that Grammy's coming?
00:25Oh, it's not bad, Grover. It's terrible.
00:28Dave!
00:30I, okay, look, you know that nobody loves Grammy more than I do.
00:34But she's getting a little bit older and she comes from a small town and, well,
00:39you know how we tell you that there are things that people might think but should never, ever say?
00:45Yeah. Grammy doesn't believe that's true.
00:49Hey, everyone. You're watching In Studio. I'm Brian Perica.
00:53And today we have Beth Baer and Max Greenfield from the neighborhood.
00:56How are you?
00:57Good. How are you?
00:58Hey, neighbors.
00:58Hey, neighbors. Thanks for coming in.
01:01So I wanted to play a fun little game with you guys because a lot of the storylines and plot points are pretty fun, relatable.
01:08I feel like you guys might have related to them in your real life, maybe.
01:13I'm ready.
01:13I'm so proud of the game.
01:15Now, do either of you have any strange neighborhood stories or have you guys been the strange neighbor to someone else?
01:21What part of the game is this?
01:23This is the game.
01:24This is where we start. We started.
01:25This is the game.
01:25This is the game.
01:26Okay. All right, I'm ready.
01:27You win a prize.
01:28I didn't know where we were.
01:29I need you to know.
01:29Yeah, this is...
01:30Ah, so have you guys...
01:31Do you guys...
01:31Either of you have any strange neighbor stories or have either of you been a strange neighbor?
01:36In college, I lived next to a rabbi who liked to walk around naked.
01:40And our back patio looked into his bedroom, and we would crack open some beers, sit on the balcony, and watch the naked rabbi go about his business.
01:49We invited over the soccer players to come, and we're our neighbors, and everybody...
01:52On the site.
01:52Okay.
01:52You know, now it sounds very creepy as I'm saying this, but...
01:56Was he naked on Shabbat?
01:59Yeah. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah.
02:01It was at his Chabad house.
02:02It was amazing, and that was my favorite neighbor.
02:06That's great.
02:07Did he know you were watching him?
02:09I think he might have, because he really...
02:12He put on a show.
02:12He did not care. He would leave the blinds open.
02:14He'd put on a big old show. He'd be on his computer, you know, just chilling.
02:17Yeah.
02:18Can you top that, Max?
02:19I feel like I'm the strange neighbor.
02:21No, are you?
02:22That's weird.
02:23What weird neighbor habits do you have?
02:27Weird? I don't...
02:28You know, if I was aware of them, I'd probably stop doing them.
02:30Yeah.
02:32Well, it's good for your neighbors.
02:33I mean, maybe.
02:34Yeah.
02:35Have either of you given a key to someone, to your place, that, looking back, you regret
02:40you did that?
02:43No, actually. Not yet.
02:45Yeah, I guess I haven't regretted it yet.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Well, that's good.
02:49I think the regret comes when you actually need the key, and they're like,
02:52Yeah, no, I remember you gave me that.
02:55Oh, yeah, and they lost it.
02:56That's happening.
02:57Give me a second. I've got to find it.
02:58And then they, like, open the drawer that's, like, their drunk drawer, and then they're peeling,
03:03and you're like, you could, you, you please tell me to put the key in that.
03:08You just search for it.
03:09Max, have you ever wanted to, or have you ever done this, propose to someone after three dates?
03:15Like your character.
03:16Oh, like his character.
03:17I was like, who does that? Oh, Dave.
03:18Oh, no, no.
03:22After five years, yes.
03:24Not after three days.
03:25My husband waited eight and a half years.
03:27Which one of you or someone in your cast would be the best at game night?
03:31I want to say myself.
03:32I sort of want to say you, too.
03:34I'm competitive, so.
03:35Although, I would think you, but I think Marcel is secretly my dominant.
03:43I agree with you on that one.
03:45Now, you guys have worked together before, but what, I guess, would you say have you learned from this show together?
03:50Like, about one another that maybe you didn't know before?
03:54That's a good question.
03:55Because you worked a lot more closely than this.
03:58Yeah, because in Hill and Made in Miss Doris, we knew we had chemistry, but we didn't get to do that much together.
04:02In this, we get to be in tons of scenes, tons of physical comedy.
04:06I really think, yeah, Hello, My Novi's Doris was just like,
04:10you know, you show up, you do your thing,
04:11and it was great, but it wasn't a full,
04:14this is a real marriage.
04:16You're actually like, yeah.
04:18And I'd say, the thing that I've learned the most about you,
04:21is that it's been so enjoyable,
04:26is that I think we work somewhat similarly
04:30in that there isn't like a lot of,
04:33you know, I gotta figure this out,
04:34it's just, let's jump in, fail, miserably,
04:39and then work backwards from there,
04:41and be like, this worked, you know,
04:42because I think a lot of people will jump in,
04:44or be hesitant to jump in,
04:47because of what might not work,
04:49and the two of us seem to just go, whoa, that didn't work,
04:53and then sort of go work from there,
04:56which I think to me is the most effective way to do it.
04:58Especially with the comedy we get to do in front of a live audience,
05:00you have to jump, if you're not gonna jump,
05:02then, you know, what's the point, you know?
05:05Going off the live audience,
05:06what about having the live audience for this show,
05:08drives the show, and drives you guys, I guess?
05:11Ooh, I love it.
05:12I mean, you've done it for a while.
05:14And I come from the theater, so I've always loved it,
05:16but I think, especially with multi-cam,
05:18like there really is sort of an energy,
05:20and you were saying this too recently,
05:22there's an energy that it sort of just heightens you,
05:24in a great way, and also, it's like Max said,
05:27you know when you fail, because they're not gonna laugh,
05:29so you really can feel the failure,
05:31and then you learn, you know what works,
05:33and what doesn't in comedy, which is really hard.
05:35Yeah, it definitely keeps you on your toes,
05:36you feel a responsibility in the audience.
05:38Are there times where you think,
05:40oh, I thought that would work, and everything, yeah.
05:42Oh my God.
05:42What's your reaction to that?
05:43He's really great, though.
05:44I really like, I like checking in with him,
05:46he'll be like, hey, do it like this,
05:47because he has really good insight,
05:49and I like that partnership.
05:51I tend to have like, good instincts for other people.
05:53Yeah.
05:54And bad instincts.
05:55He has it for himself, too.
05:57And the audience is always different, too,
05:58which I guess that makes it fun.
05:59Yeah, and you never know, sometimes you get.
06:01Unless you have the same person coming.
06:02No, we don't, but sometimes you get an audience
06:04who's like, not quite there with you,
06:05and like, then you have to sort of navigate that.
06:07I mean, it's really good practice, I think, for comedy.
06:09Like, you truly like, have to commit,
06:12like Max is saying, and you know,
06:13and go balls to the walls, or else.
06:15You realize how important reactions are also.
06:18Yeah.
06:20Because you might get a big laugh off a reaction,
06:22because they're not only watching you live,
06:24but they have a feed of the cameras,
06:26so they'll see in a big shot, like, you going, whoa.
06:29And there's a rhythm, it's like music, you know,
06:31and they really help with that.
06:33That's awesome.
06:33Now, Beth, you said the Game Night episode
06:36was your favorite this season, why is that?
06:37One of my favorites.
06:38One of your favorites.
06:40You said favorite, though.
06:41I did?
06:42Yeah, you didn't say one of my favorites.
06:42Well, then I forgot that we have another one,
06:44that with the anniversary,
06:45which is actually one of my favorites, too.
06:46Oh yeah, we'll talk about both.
06:47But I love this one because, well, I love to play games,
06:51but I got to eat a bunch of Cinnabons.
06:52Okay.
06:54I loved, like, I love scenes where both of our families
06:59are together, and this Game Night,
07:00we get, like, a lot of scenes together, and.
07:03But you also get to do.
07:04Some physical comedy tonight.
07:05Some physical stuff with Beth.
07:06With Tashina.
07:07With Tashina.
07:08Which I'm so good at.
07:09Um, and with Tashina Arnold tonight.
07:11Great.
07:12Gemma and Tina get into some trouble.
07:13Yeah.
07:14That's awesome.
07:15Now, for.
07:16Put her whole body into it.
07:17Yep.
07:17And she's like, now I'm at home.
07:18And I'm like, am I full Jim Carrey?
07:20Like, the bigger the better, you know?
07:22Just, like, reel me back in.
07:23Yeah.
07:23You trying on all the wigs.
07:25That was, like, a really fun moment.
07:26Oh.
07:26That was pretty great.
07:27Um, now you're also doing stunts in the Happy Anniversary.
07:30I love that stunt.
07:31Episode.
07:32What can, what can you talk about about that?
07:34It's kind of.
07:35And I got to celebrate in your on-screen marriage.
07:37We, yes.
07:38Uh, do you want to know the storyline storyline?
07:40Yeah, you can.
07:41Yeah.
07:42I mean, the storyline, it's our anniversary,
07:43and we're trying to get some alone time
07:44since we moved into the new neighborhood,
07:45which we have not had.
07:46No.
07:47So we dropped Grover off.
07:48Grover.
07:49Uh.
07:50Grover Johnson.
07:51We were at Calvin's house, or the butler's house,
07:54and, uh, we try to get a night alone,
07:56and it does not work out very well.
07:57Does not go well.
07:58Um, in the midst of all of that,
08:01there is sort of an homage to Tom Cruise.
08:04Yeah.
08:05And the, all of his films.
08:08Like, truly.
08:09And Max does some of the funniest physical comedy
08:11you've ever seen.
08:12Are you a big Tom Cruise fan?
08:13Yeah.
08:14Who isn't?
08:15Yeah, of course.
08:16Come on.
08:17Yeah.
08:18Um, now speaking of this cast,
08:19it's a bit of an ensemble.
08:20You have Cedric the Entertainer.
08:21What has it been like working with everyone,
08:23and what's, like, the off-screen, I guess, dynamic?
08:26Because you're at odds with Cedric a lot on screen,
08:28but you get along with...
08:29I would say that it is...
08:30I'd say it's not somewhat of an...
08:32I'd say it's a very true ensemble.
08:34Yeah.
08:35Um, you know, we're...
08:36No, it is an ensemble.
08:37Yeah, totally.
08:38Like, we're in, we're in our first season,
08:40so, you know, they're skewing some of the storylines,
08:42I'd say, a little bit more towards, I guess,
08:46the entry points of Cedric and I,
08:48and Beth and Tashina a little bit.
08:49But, like, when this...
08:51I think our show's the best when it really gives everybody
08:54an opportunity to shine.
08:55I'll do it.
08:56And there's been a few of those episodes that have,
08:57and they're all my favorites.
08:59Every actor on the show can carry the show.
09:02Like, they're...
09:03And will at some point.
09:04Yeah, and it's so exciting,
09:06and it was sort of an instant chemistry
09:08when Max and I came in with everybody,
09:10and, you know, it's truly, like,
09:12kind of incredible to be on a show
09:13where everybody is that talented,
09:15and everybody gets along.
09:16So, I mean, it's...
09:17We're really lucky.
09:18That's so great.
09:19I guess, from your experience for season one,
09:21how would you sum up how it's been so far
09:23and everything you've shot?
09:24It's bound to get canceled,
09:26because it's so good.
09:27We're, like, devastated.
09:28Devastated.
09:29We're having so much fun
09:30that we're like,
09:31please watch the show.
09:32This is not gonna continue.
09:34I've never wanted something
09:35to continue more in my life.
09:37You know people are enjoying a show
09:40and happy on it when they run to, like,
09:43oh, yeah, you know,
09:44I'll do the Twitter chat.
09:47Anything.
09:48You do any sort of press you want.
09:50They watch you live.
09:51Yeah, totally.
09:52Or, like, you get sad
09:53when you go down for a week,
09:54and I'm like, oh, I miss work.
09:56Like, you wanna go back to your job.
09:57Like, that's amazing.
09:58That is, like, the best thing ever.
09:59Like, around the weekends,
10:00you're like, oh, I wanna go back to work.
10:01Yeah.
10:02That's great.
10:03That's a great job.
10:04Yeah, totally.
10:05Who, I guess, is the prankster on set?
10:07Is there one?
10:08Prankster?
10:09I don't know if there's a prankster,
10:10but, like, Cedric is,
10:12Cedric's definitely the leader on set
10:14and sort of dictates the tone.
10:16And it's funny because his character
10:18is, like, pretty, like, tough.
10:19Yeah.
10:20But he's so genuine and generous
10:22and wonderful.
10:23But he's also, you know,
10:25such a natural stand-up
10:26and so used to being in front of the audience
