00:00If you want to hear my notes at speech, you got to sit. Let's lock in. Good morning. Good morning.
00:07I am so honored to be speaking at the Hollywood Reporter Women in Entertainment Breakfast Gala.
00:16Yeah. Yeah, it's called a breakfast gala. It's a breakfast gala. Yeah.
00:24You know you've made it as a woman in Hollywood when one of three things happen.
00:28When people call every photo shoot you do a humiliation ritual.
00:34When someone uses AI to make a video of you Frenching the sloth from Zootopia.
00:39Or when you get asked to speak at a brunch. So, yeah.
00:44And if I was a male showrunner, I'd get to show up here in a tracksuit and a fedora.
00:50I would be eating like an egg cheese sandwich out of aluminum foil.
00:54But I am not a male showrunner. So, half a dozen gay men kicked my door open at 5 a.m.
01:01And they pounded me with hammers and flat irons until I was pretty enough to go hang out with other women.
01:11So, I asked my publicist if the speech today should be funny or like serious.
01:14They were like, I think like lean funny with a hint of yay women.
01:20So, this is my shot at that.
01:25So, the other day I had a photo shoot.
01:28Sorry, I mean a humiliation ritual.
01:31And it was in one of those giant media buildings where lots of different people go to work and do different things.
01:37So, I get in my car and I see a woman with a clipboard.
01:41And being the narcissist that I am, I go, oh, she's here for me.
01:45Yeah.
01:45So, I go up to her.
01:46I'm like, hi, I'm Rachel.
01:48She's like, hi.
01:49So, nice to meet you.
01:50I'll walk you up.
01:52And so, we start walking into the building.
01:54We're just chatting.
01:55I'm like, oh, the rain has been crazy.
01:59She's like, I know.
02:00I hate driving when the roads are wet.
02:02Just really good stuff like that.
02:04And we're having a fabulous time until we arrive in a boardroom of women in suits.
02:12There's a gorgeous breakfast spread.
02:14And I look around and I'm like, okay, everybody's got binders and iPads.
02:20Weird.
02:22Not the usual photo shoot setup, but I can totally get into it.
02:25So, I look to her.
02:26I'm like, hi.
02:28So, the photo shoot vibe today, is it like risky business?
02:32Are we doing my girl boss, 2014?
02:36She was like, sorry, sorry.
02:38Are you not here for the Women's Summit?
02:41And that's when I realized that I had broken into a Women's Summit for women working in tech.
02:48And thank God it was a summit of women in tech.
02:51If it was a summit of men in tech, they would have given me their breakfast order
02:54and then gone back to figuring out if AI can make homeless people kill themselves.
02:59Whoa, whoa, whoa.
03:07Not too many jokes.
03:08It's 9 a.m.
03:10Okay.
03:11So, obviously, I apologized and I dipped.
03:14But I thought it was kind of wonderful how women create community and support wherever we go.
03:21So, so well that I wandered into a community that I'm not a part of
03:25and almost joined a random event.
03:29Fingers crossed that those ladies in tech show up here in like 20 minutes.
03:35All right.
03:35Now, it is my great honor to introduce a guy.
03:40A guy.
03:43The acclaimed late night host, the great, wonderful Jimmy Kimmel.
