Margaret Atwood recently sat down with Brut. journalist Fatima D. following the release of her memoir “Book of Lives: A Memoir of Sorts.” In both the interview and the memoir, Atwood reflects on her upbringing in Canada, the evolution of her writing career, and the experiences that shaped who she is today.

Her career spans several decades, and she has published more than 60 works across fiction, nonfiction, essays, and poetry. In the memoir, she shares personal stories and discusses the inspiration behind her work, including notable titles like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and “Alias Grace.”
In this clip from the interview, she talks about what she was like as a teenager — and why her father called her a “smart mouth.”
