00:00Robert De Niro is gearing up to take on the comic book world. The veteran actor is in
00:05negotiations to join Joaquin Phoenix in Warner Bros.' upcoming Joker standalone movie
00:10from The Hangover's Todd Phillips. Phoenix is set to portray the DC Comics villain in a movie
00:16that is more moderately budgeted and set to be darker than other films in the DC cinematic
00:21universe. Phillips is directing from a script he's co-written with Scott Silver of 8 Mile
00:26and The Fighter fame, and while plot details are still largely unknown, the standalone is
00:31supposed to be set in Gotham City in the early 1980s. If a deal takes place, De Niro would play
00:36a talk show host who is somehow instrumental in the Joker's origin. Comic book movies would
00:42certainly be a first for De Niro, who is known for his work in classics like The Godfather Part 2
00:47and Raging Bull, appearing in crime dramas and thrillers such as Goodfellas and Heat, comedies
00:53such as Meet the Parents series and Analyze This, and even dipping his toes in Fantasy Fair
00:58with the adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle or Stardust. And the standalone is said to be a
01:03character exploration as well as a drama, not a fight-fest. The project is set to begin
01:08in September in New York. For more on this story and to read the full article, head to THR.com.
