"Diversity is everything. It doesn’t matter if you’re white, black, orange – we should all have the same opportunities," Maria Borges told The Hollywood Reporter.

00:00Now I would love to get your take on the current state of diversity in fashion.
00:04On the September issues alone this year, there was a remarkable amount of women of color
00:08across all the fashion magazines, from Vogue to even Harper's Bazaar had Kanye West on
00:13the cover.
00:14What do you think of the strides fashion has made to being more inclusive?
00:17I might say it's about the time.
00:21Diversity is everything, there's a Murphy, white, black, orange.
00:26We should all have the same opportunity for sure.
00:28I think, especially it being September covers, is a big statement of change and I think obviously
00:36you can't take one step forward and ten steps back so I hope that this statement continues.
00:42It's awesome.
00:43Nicki Minaj was on the cover of Vogue Arabia in my gown and I think it's awesome and I
00:47think that's what it should be because we're trying to, I think fashion, we just need to
00:51support people.
00:52Who cares what you are, just support people.
00:55There's never enough diversity.
00:56I think until it's like 100% equality for everybody, nobody's ever going to be happy with that.
01:03And I think that we're making great strides but I mean there's so much more to be done.
01:09I think that's why I'm a Latina.
01:11This industry is very, it's not racist.
01:14I mean kind of racist with myself too and a lot of black people and most of my friends
01:20are black too.
01:21And it's just like, it's not the same.
01:23Like for the whole year, two covers is for black people but all the rest is like all white.
01:29And I was just like, seriously, well I'm very happy that these kind of things are changing,
01:33especially with Bazaar.
01:35It's like changing a lot now but I think we have like a long path to do until we get there.
01:40Like actually, equality, yes you know, so we have a long path to go.
01:47Yes, we have moved in the right direction.
01:51I remember discussing the subject of models and health and weight and models being too
01:57young, working 10 years ago.
02:00And we actually got to change a law in 2012 or 13 on the subject of underage models.
02:09That was a great step in the right direction.
02:12Now when it comes to diversity, now that it comes with different races, all of that,
02:17100% we can keep going.
02:20But in my career of span, have I seen a difference?
02:24Yes.
02:25Can we do way better?
02:26For sure.
