Au sud-ouest de l’Irlande, John et Jerome O’Brien ont 200 vaches sur 80 ha de prairies. Ils veulent le maintien de la dérogation à la directive européenne sur les nitrates pour poursuivre leur système de production basé sur le pâturage .

00:30I've been farming with six year with my parents on a grass-based system in the south of Ireland
00:38I took over the family farm with my mother back in 1980
00:43Unfortunately my father was killed in a farm accident in 1979
00:48So I was young, I was only 15 when that happened
00:52So I finished my secondary school and went to agricultural school and then came home farming
00:59We mill 200 crossbred cow on 80 hectare of grassland only
01:05So there is 55 hectare on the grazing platform for the cow
01:11And there is 25 hectare 3 km away for silage production
01:18The cow breed is Holstein Frisian
01:24Holstein Frisian with jersey and jersey cross
01:29We use New Zealand genetics
01:31I like this genetic to suit our system of grass-based production
01:36And producing high quality and high level of milk solid of fat and protein
01:42In Ireland we are paid on A plus B minus C payment system
01:48So this is protein plus butter fat minus volume of water
01:53So the type of cow we have
01:57It suits this system
01:59As they produce higher level of fat and protein kg
02:03With less or volume
02:05So it enables us to get better milk price than our society cooperative
02:11Big discussion at the moment is derogation
02:18And it's a very active and lively discussion in Ireland at the moment
02:22Currently we're at 250 here on this farm
02:26We're likely to go back to 220
02:29Ireland has to have a derogation
02:32Because as you can see our whole farming system is based on grass
02:36And eating grass and growing grass
02:37Growing clover with grass
02:39And if we take derogation out of Irish farming
02:44It puts us into an indoor system
02:46It makes us very inefficient
02:48If we lose derogation on this farm
02:51It means we lose 50 cows probably
02:54We either lose the cows or we have to rent more land
02:59Now renting more land puts an added cost on the farm
03:02Which is not needed
03:04Losing 50 cows means that the farm becomes less viable
03:09It's less viable for me and Jerome
03:11There's two of us working and living off the farm
03:14So we need what cows we have
03:17And we need the income we have
03:18To have the whole farm be viable
03:20From a national perspective
03:22This whole discussion has the potential of destroying Irish agriculture
03:29And I'm very passionate about this
03:31I think we're working very hard to improve water quality of course
03:35And we're working very hard to improve the environment
03:37We're doing an awful lot of work in that whole area
03:39Using protected urea
03:41Using multi-species sorge
03:43Using clover
03:44Making more use of slurry
03:47At better times of the year
03:51But there's only so much we can do
03:54So it's very important that we retain derogation in Ireland
03:57If we lose derogation
03:58It questions the whole viability of agriculture going forward
04:04And it's all areas of agriculture
04:05Not alone dairy
04:06But it destroys all areas of agriculture
04:08So it's vitally important that we retain derogation
04:12So the fish can last our way
04:14Let's bring in the$2.99
04:14Where do you create an eye of guard
04:15So here we can do
