Emergency services were called here to Boundary Street in West End just after 8.30 this morning.
00:08
At the job site you can see behind me a retaining wall had collapsed on two men.
00:13
A 45 year old man tragically died at the scene.
00:17
A 19 year old man was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital in a serious but stable condition.
00:23
But that was not after remaining stuck under the rubble of that retaining wall for more than an hour.
00:29
Five fire and emergency crews were called in to help extricate that young man.
00:34
There was a total of eight workers on site at the time.
00:39
The police and six of those workers had to remove concrete from the surviving male
00:45
and in doing that they probably saved his life.
00:48
He was then left in situ due to the complexity of the entrapment for the fire service to extract him.
00:55
It's a tragic thing to have happened so close to Christmas.
00:59
It's believed that the two victims are known to each other and are related which makes it even more tragic at this time of the year.
01:08
We've been told that Queensland Police will prepare a report for the coroner with workplace health and safety also investigating.
01:15
Now this part of Brisbane especially at midday on a weekday is an incredibly busy part of town.
01:21
So certainly a confronting scene for both these workers involved but also emergency crews here today.
01:27
We will be back in fact now.
01:29
We will go to the quesad and exit the new room for the night and on the day.
