00:00In a statement posted to Twitter, new Buffy the Vampire Slayer showrunner Monica Owusu-Breen
00:05has addressed the backlash to the planned reboot of the cult drama. Owusu-Breen, who was
00:09said to write the adaptation of Joss Whedon's beloved vampire drama, noted that the time
00:14is right to meet a new Slayer.
00:30News of the planned Buffy reboot broke Friday and was met almost immediately with backlash.
00:56Although many fans expressed excitement at the idea of a new take on the show with Whedon
01:00involved, many others shared their disappointment that anyone would attempt to replicate the
01:05original. The reboot will feature a black actress stepping into the role of Buffy. The
01:09project, which does not yet have a script or a network, will be contemporary and build on
01:13the original's mythology. The new Buffy will also be richly diverse and, as in the original,
01:18some aspects of the series will be seen as metaphors for issues facing society.
01:22It's unclear if Whedon will have any additional role beyond executive producer on the new
01:26Buffy due to his other commitments, which include HBO's recent straight-to-series order
01:30The Nevers. Whedon and Owusu-Breen have been working closely together on the reboot,
01:35and casting has not yet been determined. To read more on the planned Buffy reboot, head to
