00:10Well, we're about to find out as a reboot of Tomb Raider, this time starring Alicia Vikander
00:14as Lara Croft, hits Multiplex's Friday.
00:17Opening more than 3,700 theaters, Tomb Raider is tracking to debut between $23 and $25
00:22million at the North American box office this weekend.
00:25But Ryan Coogler's Black Panther looks to earn $25 million or so over its fifth weekend.
00:30If it stays atop the chart, the Disney and Marvel blockbuster will be the first film since
00:34Avatar eight years ago to win for five consecutive weekends.
00:38Tomb Raider from Warner Bros. and MGM hopes to restart the film franchise about an adventurous
00:43and fearless archaeologist. This time out, Ms. Croft sets out on a dangerous journey to solve
00:48the mystery of her father's disappearance. Co-starring with Wakanda in the $90 million
00:52film is Dominic West, Walton Goggins, Daniel Wu and Kristen Scott Thomas.
00:57The first entry in the original franchise, Lara Croft's Tomb Raider, debuted to an impressive
01:01$47.7 million in June 2001 and more than $77 million when adjusted for inflation.
01:07While the sequel, Lara Croft's The Cradle of Life, opened with $21 million two years later
01:12unadjusted for inflation. Meanwhile, A Wrinkle in Time, which opened to a muted $33.1 million
01:17in North America last weekend, is the only broad family film in the marketplace and hopes
01:22to suffer only a small drop. Among other new offerings besides Tomb Raider, Fox opens
01:26young adult adaptation Love, Simon, the first film from a major Hollywood studio featuring a
01:30gay teen protagonist. Greg Berlanti directs the dramedy, which stars Nick Robinson as
01:35Simon Spear, a closeted high schooler who tries to find out the identity of an anonymous
01:39classmate he's fallen in love with online. Josh Jamal and Jennifer Garner co-star.
01:44Fox is projecting an opening in the $10-$12 million range for Love, Simon, but other box office
01:49observers think it could climb higher since the film has been embraced by critics.
01:53Getting an early jump on Easter roadside attractions and Lionsgate will open the faith-based
01:57film I Can Only Imagine in more than 1,600 cinemas. The $7 million film stars J. Michael
02:03Finley as Bart Millard, the lead singer of the Christian band Mercy Me, who wrote I Can Only
02:07Imagine, considered to be the most popular song in Christian music history.
02:11Dennis Quaid and Cloris Leachman also star in the film, which is tracking to open in the
02:15$3-$5 million range. And Focus Features debuts the critically snubbed Seven Days in Entebbe
02:20in roughly 800 theaters. Daniel Brawl and Rosamund Pike star as German radicals in the
02:25thriller about the 1976 rescue of hostages from a hijacked Air France flight diverted to Uganda.
