00:00What is your emergency?
00:20We're at a party at Tidwell and someone was shooting and someone got caught.
00:24Okay, hold on one second, okay?
00:26And you're at the Tidwell, um, are you with the patient now that was shot?
00:33Yes.
00:34All right.
00:35Where were they shot at?
00:37I don't know.
00:38I don't know.
00:39They were one of my friends.
00:41Okay, do you know who shot them?
00:43No.
00:44Okay, I've got people in the way, okay?
00:56No.
00:57No.
00:58No.
00:59No.
01:00No.
01:01No.
01:02A call for service comes out saying there's an active shooter.
01:06So we knew that this was a warehouse concert event.
01:09And as an officer, we know our job is to get there and help isolate the threat.
01:15In round two, the location, my body camera activates automatically because there's an emergency happening.
01:2824, I'm on scene.
01:3124, receive it.
01:32Any time you hear there is a threat, there's a firearm, there's a weapon, it is normal for your brain to go, this is dangerous.
01:42This could harm you.
01:43I'm a father.
01:44I'm married.
01:45I have a family.
01:46But the sheriff's office is expected to protect the citizens of Smith County.
01:51Right now, officer just showed up.
01:54Where's he at?
01:55Somebody just got shot down here.
01:56Where's he at?
01:57Who's the shooter?
01:58They're right at the warehouse.
01:59Where's the shooter?
02:00Um, there's a guy in a white shirt with a gun.
02:01There's a gun?
02:02There's officers here now.
02:03Okay, all right.
02:04So there's officers here now.
02:0624, getting reports that the gunman has already left the scene.
02:10I'm going to go ahead and double check.
02:12I'm already parked out here on the loop extension at the entrance of Tidwell.
02:15Several subjects are leaving at a high rate of speed.
02:17You might want to pick it up, guys.
02:19Nobody knows.
02:20Nobody knows at this time who the suspect is.
02:27You guys okay?
02:28Yes.
02:29Somebody up there that's bleeding.
02:30He's bleeding out.
02:31Hey, sir.
02:32He got shot.
02:33He's bleeding.
02:34We got one victim, according to witnesses.
02:37Is the shooter still up there?
02:38Go, go, go, go.
02:39Shooter?
02:40Go, go, go.
02:42As deputies approached the scene, they observe people running from the location as if they're
02:48bleeding out.
02:49You don't know if one of those even could be the shooter or if there's multiple shooters,
02:55but you still have to get in there.
02:57Put him down.
02:58Put him down.
02:59Let me see him.
03:00Let me see him.
03:01Where'd he get hit?
03:02Where'd he get hit?
03:03I'll put a bandana right there.
03:04Okay.
03:05All right.
03:06I got an ambulance coming.
03:07Shooter.
03:08Where's he at?
03:09No, we don't know.
03:10So you don't know where he left?
03:11There's somebody going headed to the hospital right now.
03:12Everybody left.
03:13All right, put it down.
03:14Put it down.
03:15Ow!
03:16Trill.
03:17Trill.
03:18Stop.
03:19Stop.
03:20Is it really blood right there, bro?
03:21Hey!
03:22Don't worry about that .
03:23Trell, don't worry about it, bro.
03:2524.
03:26I got one victim shot in the leg.
03:27The victim was identified as Ken Trell.
03:30We want to save this man's life.
03:32But you have a femoral artery inside your thigh.
03:35And it can be 20 to 30 seconds.
03:36You can bleed out of your body.
03:38You only have seconds to go depending on if it's a deep wound.
03:42Come on.
03:43It's okay.
03:44Don't want me untie me, man.
03:45No, no, no.
03:46No, no, no.
03:47We got him.
03:48We got him.
03:49We got him.
03:50The deputy takes his tourniquet and applies it to the leg.
03:53Open your leg just a little bit.
03:54Open your leg.
03:55Come on.
03:56It's okay.
03:57The big one that got shot.
03:58Come on.
03:59Come on.
04:00Look at me.
04:01Hey!
04:02Hey!
04:03You're going to be digging and just...
04:04All right.
04:05This might be a little tight, all right?
04:06It's going to be a little tight.
04:07It's okay.
04:08It's okay.
04:09The tourniquet has then slid in and around the thigh and applying pressure and strapping
04:13it down.
04:14We then wind it up and tighten it.
04:15We got to do that.
04:16We got to do that.
04:17We're broken down here.
04:18We got to do that.
04:19I'm so sorry.
04:20We got to do that.
04:21All right.
04:22It's going to be a little tight.
04:23I'm so sorry.
04:24You're such a great person.
04:25I'm so sorry.
04:26I'm so sorry.
04:27You're such a great person.
04:28I'm so sorry.
04:29I come back and talking.
04:32That's great.
04:3324 just for information.
04:35Tourniquet's been put on.
04:36Oh, my God.
04:37No.
04:38Great thing.
04:39Tourniquet applied.
04:40And then we can tell the blood flow is stopped and we leave it there until a medical personnel
04:43take it off.
04:44Sir, did you check on the person inside?
04:46I'm going to be with you.
04:47Is there somebody inside?
04:49I'm going to be right.
04:50There's someone right there.
04:51They said they transported another person.
04:53He's laying right there.
04:54There's somebody inside.
04:55Is there somebody else inside, sir?
04:56Yes, sir.
04:57Then the deputies have seen the information that there was another gunshot victim at the
05:01location.
05:02Just more and more chaos.
05:0324, you hit that or outside of the city?
05:0624, we got a second victim possible.
05:09Come on.
05:10Speed it up.
05:113D, possible another victim?
05:12They found the next gunshot victim shirtless at the entrance of the club.
05:17So, can you help out?
05:18Where'd he get hit?
05:19Where'd he get hit?
05:20Look at his mouth.
05:21I think he got hit in his mouth.
05:22I think he got hit in his mouth.
05:23That's why I'm trying to make sure my toes don't do it.
05:27Tempo, we got two victims.
05:28One shot in the leg.
05:29The other one, I don't know where he's hit.
05:30He's unresponsive at this time.
05:32EMS is on scene.
05:34They're coming.
05:35Who did this?
05:36Does anybody know who did this?
05:37No, no, no.
05:38Nobody?
05:39No.
05:40They're providing the CPR, and it's just, it's terrible.
05:44They see a small amount of blood coming out of his mouth.
05:46They see him prone down on the ground, and he's not responding to anyone talking to him.
05:50Where's my victim?
05:51Up the top, to the right.
05:53We get medical up there.
05:54That's when we realize that he is an actual gunshot wound to his back.
06:01This is not something we're unaccustomed to, but it's something that no one wants to deal with as a human being.
06:06What's his name?
06:07It's Keontae Barrett.
06:08Keontae Barrett.
06:09K-U-I?
06:10U-N-D-T
06:12U-N-T.
06:13T-A-T.
06:15We learned the identity of the unresponsive victim is Keontae Barrett.
06:20He was transported to the hospital.
06:22Keontae was a real good kid, he was lovable, he was happy, he got along with his brothers
06:39and sisters, he cared for all of them, and he was showing them the way that it's supposed
06:44to be.
06:45The moment I found out about Keontae getting shot, his brother had called me, said, Dad,
06:51they just called me and told me Keontae got shot, I was in disbelief.
06:56They said, hurry up, get to the hospital, cause Keontae's been shot, why my son?
07:03Why my son?
07:05I didn't understand, Keontae was a good person, I was asking God, you know, what, why?
07:14Well, we need to make sure we get our scene integrity going up, so we move everybody out
07:18here just for a moment, we're up.
07:21Once we have the medically injured taken care of, we do a safety sweep of the area,
07:26we wanna make sure that we don't have a shooter here anymore, we don't have an active threat.
07:31Where were they shot in the leg or the back?
07:35Do you remember where they were?
07:36Two were shot in the leg, one is headed to the hospital right now, and one shot in the
07:40side.
07:41I don't know.
07:42You didn't see anything happen?
07:43No, sir.
07:44That's what he has left.
07:45Information was passed, then another gunshot victim, Ira, had already been transported
07:50to the hospital.
07:54When I arrive on scene, I do take control of the scene, being the lead detective.
07:58Every decision from there on out goes through me.
08:02At that point, we had three victims at the hospital that had been shot.
08:06That's where the first victim was sitting.
08:10The first one got transported by POV.
08:13Okay.
08:15That wooden fence, that's where the second victim was.
08:18EMS trash where he was lying.
08:20First thing I want to do is talk to my deputies to see what they've gathered so far.
08:25Shooting half in the back, right?
08:27Yes.
08:28You're gonna walk in, there's a stage right in the middle, on the left-hand side is where
08:32the casings are.
08:34So let's go check that out.
08:41My deputies led me to believe that the shooting actually occurred inside the building.
08:46So of course, we were brought to inside the warehouse.
08:50Inside the warehouse, just chaotic scene.
08:53But one thing I was able to notice right away were casings.
08:56I could actually observe them on the concrete floor.
09:04There's clothing items all over the place.
09:08Chairs torn down.
09:09You can see blood spatter on ground, on some objects.
09:13You can tell that from the knocked over tables, the trash, cups everywhere, just chaos.
09:22My crime scene technician was able to show me evidence of bullet holes in the ceiling.
09:30We found out that a flyer went out for the rap group, the head honchos.
09:36They were inviting people to come party with them at Tidwill that night.
09:40And that's why everyone was there that night.
09:44From the evidence so far, we still had a lot of unanswered questions.
09:49We needed more to move forward with our investigation.
09:53I did have deputies go talk to witnesses that were still located on scene and bring those
09:59statements back to me.
10:01And as soon as it happened, everyone got down and died off to the stage.
10:06The shots started going off probably like 10, maybe 10, 15 seconds after the fight started.
10:11What we need to know is who was here, why were you here, what was going on, what did you see?
10:16How long did you see anything?
10:18I was the DJ.
10:19Okay.
10:20I was on stage, I was DJing, and I started seeing the scuffle.
10:25So naturally, I turned the music off.
10:28And when I turned off the music, the next thing I knew, I just heard the shots.
10:33And we all just got down.
10:35And when I got up, my friend Trey was hit and my friend Junior was hit.
10:38And when I went outside, my friend was hit on the game.
10:41Collin did mention that this all started over an initial physical application on the stage
10:48during the concert that night.
10:50Did you see anybody that was doing the shooting?
10:52No, one of them.
10:53What's his name?
10:54PJ.
10:55PJ?
10:56PJ is one of the people involved in the shooting?
10:59Yeah, I only know his alias is PJ.
11:03Who is PJ, and is he my potential shooter?
11:06We need to find out everything we can about him because he is still a potential threat.
11:11We still don't know exactly what happened, and it was still a mystery for us.
11:24Our deputies were continuing to get witness statements throughout the night.
11:27Receiving the name PJ, the first thing I start thinking is, was this an intentional shooting?
11:33There are so many questions and scenarios that go through my head now.
11:36We need to find out if that's even his real name.
11:39Nicknamed is PJ, or is that short for something?
11:42It might be short.
11:43We do not know.
11:44It might be.
11:45We just know about PJ.
11:47White, black, Hispanic.
11:48He is American.
11:49Anybody know where PJ lives?
11:50The apartment complex in town, that's all I can tell you.
11:52He lives there with his mom.
11:54Okay.
11:55So PJ lives with his mom.
11:56Through our law enforcement resources and our research, we were able to locate PJ's address.
12:03We wanted to get our deputies and detectives over there as soon as possible so we could pick him up and bring him in for questioning.
12:11We located PJ and we interviewed him.
12:24Do you like to go by your last name for him?
12:27I didn't know I was PJ.
12:28PJ, is that okay?
12:29Okay.
12:30Detective Smith, how are you?
12:31We've been out this all day.
12:33Yeah, I was gonna say, you know we've been out this all day.
12:36PJ was a young man looking to make a name for himself.
12:49He tells me that he'd go where he wanted to go, where he'd do what he wanted to do.
12:54Do me a favor, start to finish, tell me from the minute you got there to the minute you left, what is going on?
13:01PJ was there that night at the concert.
13:05For the rap group, the head honchos.
13:08PJ let us know that he's had beef with the head honchos for a long time.
13:13During one of the head honchos songs they started singing, which was called Red Rum.
13:18And of course, red rum means murder, if you twist the words around.
13:23He got very offended by it.
13:25And this is what started PJ going on this stage and start fighting them.
13:30Tells us he's more of a physical fighter and does not carry a gun.
13:35People texting me through PJ, was you shooting at the party?
13:41Was you shooting at the party?
13:42Was you shooting at the party?
13:43Was you shooting at the party?
13:44I know you don't mess with guns.
13:45I don't mess with guns.
13:46What the ****?
13:47I mean, what in the world do I look like messing with a gun?
13:52I'm on probation.
13:53Get caught with one.
13:55I'm gone.
13:56I don't want to spend no time in jail.
13:58I don't have any intentions.
14:00I don't feel the need to take nobody off this earth unless they threatening me.
14:04What I mean by threatening is in a kill-to-be-kill situation.
14:07PJ did not see who the shooter was, did not.
14:11After our interview with PJ, it was determined that we didn't have any evidence at that time.
14:18We had nothing to hold him on.
14:20I'm more scared of the police than I'm scared of any, another African American.
14:24We did eventually let him go and leave the sheriff's office.
14:28We were, of course, looking for all types of leads.
14:43So I sent my fellow detectives to the hospital so they could talk to the victims to see if
14:48they could relay any new evidence to see who had shot them.
14:52So one of the victims my detective spoke to at the hospital was Cantrell.
14:57Cantrell actually was shot in the leg while on scene.
15:02We were trying to figure out if there was a beef with somebody.
15:05If there was somebody pissed off at you or him.
15:10If you guys were up there rapping, was it a rap battle?
15:13Were you talking crap about somebody?
15:16Do you know who that dude was?
15:30Cantrell just gave me a very vague statement that he was at the club.
15:35He heard people fighting and then he was shot.
15:38Cantrell just didn't really give any indication that he knew who the shooter was.
15:44There was a lot of things that weren't answered that I needed answers to.
15:50After speaking to Cantrell, we located another victim that had also been shot in the leg.
15:56Ira, who was in another part of the hospital.
15:59Tell me about when you got hit.
16:01Did you feel it from the back?
16:02No, like, no, with the, uh, I had got punched in the eye first.
16:06Like, somebody hit me in the eye.
16:08And then it was like maybe three seconds later, it was pow, pow.
16:12And then, I don't know, I didn't feel the gunshot at first.
16:15But then, like, I slowly started falling down and I was like, yeah, I got a shot.
16:21Ira stated that there was a fight that had broken out and he ended up getting shot in the leg.
16:27Ira also said he didn't see who shot the gun.
16:31We asked him if he could identify anybody on that stage that was included in the fight.
16:36And the name he gave us was Trayvon Maddox.
16:40But that was his own friend and he had no thought in the world that his own friend would shoot him.
16:45However, Trayvon Maddox needs to be located because now I'm interested in what Trey has to say and what he observed that night.
16:54The atmosphere that night in the hospital lobby, it was what you would expect, um, with a lot of concerned people looking for information on their family member or their friend.
17:09We also noticed the other victims, Keontae's parents, were there sitting in a consulting room to where they, they were alone away from everyone.
17:20Detective Loftus and I began speaking to the parents.
17:24All right, Ron, your son, what's your son's name?
17:28Keontae.
17:29Keontae.
17:30K-U-Y-U-N-E-T-A.
17:31Okay.
17:32Barrett.
17:33He got a tattoo on his own wall.
17:35Is it?
17:36A red, on my blue rose with Susan.
17:38Susan.
17:39Yeah, I love the tattoos.
17:41Yeah.
17:42Yeah, on his shoulder.
17:43I forgot what that was.
17:45Um, he, he was brought in, um, it was too much damage.
17:53He didn't make it?
17:54No, sir.
17:55Oh my God!
17:56Oh my God!
17:57Oh no!
17:58We had to notify them of what had happened.
18:03Keontae had passed and we, we knew at that point we were working a homicide investigation.
18:09And the, the totality and everything kind of got a lot more intense at that point.
18:15They told us that, um, they couldn't save him.
18:20That they lost him.
18:23That was the moment that it sunk into me that, I'm gonna have to bury a child.
18:29I just lost a son.
18:33And I was asking God, like, what did, what did I do?
18:38What did I do wrong for you, for, for you to punish me because you took my son from me?
18:46I died when Keontae died.
18:59When I did let them know the father was extremely distraught, he actually knocked me against the wall, getting out the door.
19:20And the whole room went dark because he knocked me against the light switch.
19:25After I notified the parents, they left the room and notified everybody that was outside that were also waiting for information.
19:33The whole ER erupted.
19:45They were distraught, they were upset, they were sad.
19:49It was, it was just chaos.
19:54You better not hit it.
19:57Back up, you better not hit it!
19:59Back up, back up, back up, back up!
20:02Everybody back up!
20:04Back up!
20:06Get everybody out of here, everybody out!
20:08Back up, everybody out, back up!
20:14There were pictures coming off the wall.
20:18Tyler PD officers were struggling to keep people at bay, to keep them from tearing the room up.
20:25There was a ton of emotion in that room.
20:27The very next thing we needed to do was get back control of that situation and get everybody up.
20:48It was a tense situation. It was a bomb ready to go off.
20:57We were no longer working just a shooting. We were working a murder.
21:05Emotions were high. Names were being thrown out. Blame was being thrown out,
21:10which caused people to actually start fighting each other because of who they were accusing or who they were protecting.
21:16One of the names that was being thrown out was Trayvon Maddox.
21:20We needed to turn our attention to Trayvon and get him in for an interview.
21:27During our research on information on Trayvon Maddox,
21:37it was brought to our attention that he had a previous arrest for an unlawful carry of a weapon.
21:42This definitely tells us that Trayvon could possibly be armed with a handgun,
21:46and he possibly is our shooter.
21:49Through our law enforcement resources, we were able to produce an address for Trayvon.
21:54So the next morning, myself, Detective Smith, Detective McClanahan,
22:03all went to Trayvon's apartment to make contact with him.
22:09Hey! Tray, how are you? Good morning.
22:13Hey, so of course, you know why we're here, right?
22:17About what happened last night?
22:18Yeah, because I know you were one of the individuals there, right?
22:21Yes, ma'am.
22:22Okay.
22:23Trayvon tells me right away, I was expecting you guys to come to my house.
22:27He appeared to be calm, cooperative, wasn't really worried that we were there.
22:32Did you ever go to the hospital?
22:33I couldn't go to the hospital because they thought I did it.
22:36They thought, like, I shot him, like, literally.
22:38Who said that?
22:40Everybody, like, all his family, like, because they were trying to fight with my friend, right?
22:45Mm-hmm.
22:46He said that he knew that a lot of people were so-called trash-talking him,
22:51calling him the shooter, saying that he's the one that shot Keontae and being blamed for it.
22:56So I continued to press Trayvon on what happened at the club.
23:01People came off stage and they hit my homeboy, Trayvon.
23:04So when they hit him, gunshots went up.
23:07And when the gunshots went up, I heard two gunshots, right?
23:11I heard two gunshots.
23:12He got hit in the leg.
23:13He said, oh, I'm shot.
23:15So I grabbed his gun.
23:17I shot in the air.
23:18There's a bullet hole in there.
23:19You can go look at Tidwell.
23:20There is a bullet hole in the air where I shot right in the air.
23:23And then three more shots went off at us on stage.
23:26When Trayvon mentioned that he grabbed a gun from Contrell's waist,
23:30this was the first time I've heard that Contrell had a gun on him.
23:33Now, according to Trayvon, he said he wanted to fire Contrell's gun,
23:39fire it in the air because he wanted people to scatter and run away.
23:43He actually told us to go check the ceiling at Tidwell,
23:46which we already knew there was holes in the ceiling.
23:51So this was something that supported his story.
23:54But was it the initial first shot?
23:56It's still unknown at this point, but it's important that we find out.
24:02Where's the gun at?
24:02He said, where is the gun?
24:04The gun is in my car.
24:08Like, I didn't drive my car here because I was drunk.
24:11So it wasn't Tidwell.
24:12I gave my keys back to my homeboy.
24:14It was still hard to believe that he didn't know where this gun was.
24:18It was definitely suspicious.
24:19So we needed to bring him down to our office for more questioning.
24:23We don't have arrest warrant or anything from you, OK?
24:25Our main goal is just to find out what is going on.
24:27I would be right here if you don't have any arrest warrant.
24:29Well, now, I will say this, though.
24:32We do need you to come with us, though, OK?
24:35Yeah.
24:36It's going to be down this way.
24:36Yeah, it's going to be on this one.
24:56When we arrive to our office with Trayvon, of course, we walk him in and we sit him in
25:03one of our interview rooms.
25:04We know he had more to give, we know he knows more than actually what he told us, and we're
25:11hoping to go in there and get that information from him.
25:17From the beginning, and as best as you can, everything you can remember, okay?
25:23So, we was all on stage, and we're performing, and there's a group that don't like us.
25:27One of them got mad when he got on stage and pushed my homeboy, and then he hit him.
25:32And when he hit him, I heard a shot, like somebody shot.
25:35And my homeboy looked at me, he said, I got shot.
25:37And then I grabbed my homeboy's gun, and I shot in the air to make everybody leave.
25:41And that's when I heard three more shots in the crowd.
25:43And then everybody, like, ran, like, after them three shots.
25:46And then there was this big dude, the G dude, he was outside with a gun.
25:48He initially stuck with his story, but during further questioning, he finally revealed to us
25:55a name of an individual that he saw outside of the club with a gun in his hand, and gave
26:00us the name G, which stood for Giavari.
26:02It could be the fact that he's just trying to get all this off of him and steer us in a
26:09different direction, but it's still a lead we need to follow up with, because Giavari could
26:13have been the possible shooter, too, of Keontae.
26:16All right, sit tight for a second.
26:21Trayvon admitted to shooting a gun in a place that was full with innocent bystanders, a very
26:27crowded place.
26:28So we made the decision to go forward and arrest him for deadly conduct, which is a felony charge.
26:36He was taken to our Smith County Jail.
26:39We still had unanswered questions, especially with the gun that Trayvon used.
26:50Where it was, you know, we had no idea at that point, and this was something that was very
26:54important to this case, because, again, in back of my mind, he still could be responsible
27:01for Keontae's death.
27:02It is extremely important to find the gun that Trayvon used, because that's something
27:09that we can do ballistic analysis on to prove if he was responsible for Keontae's death or
27:16he just shot up in the ceiling.
27:18Trayvon being charged and arrested at the time gave us a little time to conduct more investigations
27:25to find out what actually is true about what he told us.
27:28Due to Trayvon mentioning Giavari to us, especially with a gun in his hands, he's now become someone
27:36of interest to us in this case.
27:38During our initial research with Giavari, he had no criminal history.
27:42He had no connection to any of our victims, but we need to follow up any lead that leads
27:47us to anyone who could be responsible for Keontae's death.
27:50So we start watching him during surveillance.
27:55Then I received word from my narcotics detectives and fellow deputies of they saw Giavari get
28:03in his car and followed him.
28:07We had the radio on.
28:09We were listening.
28:11He could be armed and dangerous.
28:13Hey, felony stop, guys.
28:14Felony stop.
28:15It's a high-risk traffic stop where officers, when they initially get out, they don't approach
28:29the vehicle.
28:30They actually will have weapons drawn and they will call out the suspect out of their vehicle
28:35and have them walk back to them because, again, he could be potentially armed.
28:39Driver, roll down your window.
28:43Turn off your engine.
28:46Take your keys out of the ignition.
28:49Go ahead, throw your keys out.
28:52Knowing a suspect might be armed, you have to be ready for anything and everything, especially
28:58when you're investigating the shooting.
29:01He could be one of the shooters.
29:04I've been in law enforcement 20 years.
29:07I don't know if I've ever done a simple traffic stop and not been nervous.
29:21Open the door from the outside.
29:27Go ahead and step out.
29:28Keep your hands visible.
29:30Keep your hands up.
29:35Step out.
29:36Step out.
29:37Step out.
29:38Step out.
29:41Keep your hands up.
29:42Run away from me.
29:44Back up slowly.
29:47During the felony traffic stop, deputies were able to call out the individual driving the
29:53car back to them and properly detain him.
29:57They were able to identify the individual as being Giovari.
30:00Hey.
30:02What's going on?
30:03What's going on?
30:08Mm-hmm.
30:11Use the key to open the trunk?
30:12It's in the trunk?
30:13Yeah.
30:16Hey, he said you need the key to open up the trunk.
30:18That's where the pistol's at.
30:19During Giovari's felony traffic stop, officers located a handgun in the trunk of his vehicle.
30:29Finding a firearm in Giovari's vehicle was very important, especially if this could be the potential murder weapon of Keontae.
30:39Do you mind passing that seat?
30:41Yeah.
30:41Yeah.
30:54Once they had Giovari detained and in custody, they did bring him down to the sheriff's office
30:59for an interview.
31:02He was willing to talk to us.
31:06You start.
31:07All right, so boom.
31:08I probably wasn't even there for like 15 minutes.
31:13So I get there, whatever this is.
31:16I mean, I can tell there's a lot of tension going on from some guys that's on the dance floor,
31:20some guys that's on the stage.
31:24And they just start fighting on stage probably 10, 16 seconds.
31:28That's when you hear the first shot.
31:31And then after the first one, like two more went out.
31:34That was like back to back.
31:35They were like.
31:36So we had everybody trying to get out the door or whatever.
31:40I wouldn't have got my gun.
31:42I grabbed my gun from the car.
31:43I didn't have my gun at first.
31:44I grabbed my gun from the car.
31:48Giovari stated that he actually retreated his gun from his car,
31:52but it was after the shots had been fired already and people were running out of the building.
31:57Giovari tells us that he went to grab his gun and it was for his protection.
32:02Giovari admitted to getting his firearm from his vehicle,
32:06but he also stated that he didn't shoot.
32:10I was skeptical to anything Giovari was saying.
32:12He was very adamant on clearing his name and wanting us to know and believe that he had no involvement in the death of Keontae Barrett.
32:33He shared a lot of information with us and was very forthcoming.
32:38But Giovari was arrested on unrelated charges for marijuana.
32:44We still need to take that weapon and still have it analyzed, see if it is ruled out or potentially the murder weapon.
32:51As we continue to investigate, a rumor was brought to our attention that a man named Nathan Austin
33:03was in possible possession of the gun that Trayvon used.
33:13With that information, a team of investigators went to locate Nathan and found Nathan at a pond.
33:20When detectives approach Nathan in the pond, the first thing he says to them is,
33:27I'm looking for the gun that Trayvon used.
33:30Nathan does tell detectives he is responsible for throwing the gun in the pond.
33:34So with this new information, we brought Nathan to our office for further questioning.
33:39Nathan did admit to us that he was there at Tidwell after they went to the hospital.
34:02While he was at the hospital, he was actually approached by a girl there who said that she was at the concert that night.
34:10And that she had possession of Trayvon's gun.
34:13I was like, just come out of my land and put it in my lake.
34:15So then you don't get seen on the side of the road.
34:18She just kept freaking out, freaking out, freaking out.
34:19She said she wanted to get rid of it.
34:20And I was like, fine, just give it to me and I'll do it.
34:23So she took the gun out of the trunk and handed it to you?
34:26Yeah, she followed me down to the lake.
34:30And then I had third in the lake.
34:32At this point, since we don't know the actual identification of the actual shooter,
34:38Nathan is now a suspect as well.
34:40Everybody's a suspect until the actual shooter is identified.
34:45During my interview with Nathan, he allowed us to search his cell phone,
34:49which provided us messages between him and Trayvon.
34:52Trayvon wanted Nathan to recover the gun from the pond
34:56because he believed this would clear his name.
35:03It was very important for us to recover this weapon,
35:07this gun that was now in this pond.
35:09It's a big piece of evidence because any gun recovered in this case
35:14is a potential murder weapon, the weapon that killed Keontae Barrett.
35:17The main priority is locating the gun, so die team was assembled.
35:23And die team was able to locate the gun in the pond.
35:31We have Trayvon's gun and Giavari's gun sent off for testing
35:40to see if one of those matches the bullet that took Keontae's life.
35:45Eventually, we did get the results back.
35:48In the investigation, we located and tested Giavari's gun,
36:03and we also tested the gun located in the pond
36:06that was used by Trayvon and discarded by Nathan.
36:10One of the guns resulted in being a match for the gun used to kill Keontae.
36:15When I did receive the results of the ballistic testing,
36:21proving which gun shot and killed Keontae,
36:24I decided to go to the Smith County Jail
36:27where Trayvon was still being held on the deadly conduct charge
36:30and actually give him the news of my findings.
36:34We do have to tell you something.
36:38What do they think?
36:39It's not good news.
36:40What do they think?
36:45We dragged the palm, got the gun back,
36:47and it was where they were at, okay?
36:49There was no magazine.
36:51But we do know for a fact from evidence
36:54they were shot more than once.
36:58Barrett?
36:59Mm-hmm.
37:00Keontae?
37:02Keontae?
37:02Yeah.
37:03Yeah.
37:03Ballistic analysis came back
37:18and showed that Trayvon's gun
37:20mashed the bullet that killed Keontae Barrett.
37:22The bullet that killed Barrett
37:25came from the gun that was in your hand.
37:28How did they...
37:29How?
37:30Please tell me how.
37:31Because there's a new...
37:31Matt, okay.
37:32Forensic science, okay?
37:34They did all the testing.
37:35The gun was shot more than once.
37:37There was a witness who said
37:38that you did a double tap.
37:41You may have not realized it.
37:43I did not shoot that boy.
37:45That was my friend.
37:46I know.
37:47He kept on repeating
37:48that he'd shot up in the ceiling.
37:50He also would say
37:52maybe it was a ricochet.
37:54Maybe the bullet bounced.
37:55But again, I told Trayvon
37:57that even if it was a ricochet,
38:00the science behind it
38:01and all the evidence,
38:04even if it was a ricochet,
38:05you're responsible for that bullet.
38:06You knowingly pulled the trigger
38:07and you're responsible
38:09for wherever that bullet goes.
38:11He was in disbelief.
38:12He still did not believe
38:14that he killed Keontae.
38:15Why would I shoot him?
38:19Honestly, I believe
38:19it was an accident.
38:22I do believe
38:26it was an accident.
38:30I did not shoot him.
38:33I mean, he had took a life.
38:34He should have been,
38:36in my eyes,
38:37remorseful, apologizing.
38:39I can understand
38:39being in disbelief,
38:41but it didn't seem like
38:42there was too much remorse there.
38:43Keontae was dead.
38:46His family is grieving.
38:50He knew Keontae.
38:52As a result of the investigation,
38:55Trayvon pled to the charge
38:56of manslaughter
38:57and was sentenced to 10 years.
38:58there was no time
39:09that I thought
39:10Nathan Austin
39:10was responsible
39:11for the death
39:12of Keontae Barrett.
39:13There was nothing
39:14pointing towards him
39:15being involved.
39:17It's still unknown
39:18if there's more than one shooter.
39:20And till this day,
39:21we still have not been able
39:22to identify
39:23who else shot that night.
39:24But we know
39:26Trayvon Maddox
39:27shot Keontae.
39:29I don't believe
39:29Trayvon did it intentionally.
39:31I believe it was an accident.
39:33But you have to question
39:35when he said
39:36he shot in an error,
39:37what exactly does that mean?
39:39There's no way to tell
39:40and somebody died from it.
39:42It was a relief
39:43to be able to
39:44let the parents know
39:45that we had found
39:46the person responsible
39:48for killing Keontae.
39:49And when I first heard
39:52that they had arrested
39:53somebody and who it was,
39:55I mean,
39:56I knew this kid
39:57and I knew this kid's parents.
40:01And had that kid
40:01would have came to me
40:02and told me
40:03that it was an accident,
40:04that he accidentally did that,
40:07then I could have
40:08forgiven him for that.
40:11But due to the fact
40:13that he tried to hide it
40:15and cover it up
40:16and act like he didn't do it
40:17and didn't show no remorse
40:19when we was in the courtroom,
40:21nah, I don't accept
40:22the type of sentencing
40:24that they gave him.
40:28My life is still in 2019.
40:31The day my baby died,
40:32that's the day
40:33I stopped living.
40:35I really haven't processed it.
40:37I know he's not coming back
40:39and I know Keontae
40:41would want me to go on,
40:42but it feels like
40:43I'm stuck in 2019.
40:45When my son died,
40:46I died.
40:47After Keontae passed,
40:52his brothers and sisters,
40:54we had these made for him.
40:58It's a keepsake for Keontae
41:00to always remember him by.
41:04On the back,
41:05it's got a saying on it.
41:08You'll always be near
41:09to our hearts.
41:11This is my memory of him.
41:13I mean, it's just,
41:16you know, it's bittersweet.
41:18He was a good kid,
41:19taken too soon.
41:20I...
41:21I'm sorry.
41:27I'm sorry.
41:29You'll be near.
41:29Since he was here,
41:30sabée and her father,
41:34I was warned.
