00:00This is Tim Waspuk from Best Track Concert TV.
00:29I'm here in Austin for Fantastic Fest.
00:32It's something you strive to achieve and hope you pull it off.
00:38And for me, I'm definitely heavily influenced and love films that bend and blend genres and having a diverse cast of characters.
00:56So that was important to me to instill into the film.
01:00And they all did a fantastic job embodying those characters.
01:06I would say the balance there.
01:10Are you asking how I wrote the characters or how I directed them?
01:14The thing is, is that living in L.A., everybody runs across these characters at a party every once in a while.
01:20You know everyone.
01:22Even if I'm not drunk, you're good to go.
01:25Because their cadence is so specific.
01:29For me, when I watch a film, I want to connect with and I want to remember the characters.
01:37A goal of mine is always to, I want every character to be able to have at least, at minimum, a very memorable scene and line.
01:49I love when I watch a film and I am quoting or thinking about, not necessarily the lead character.
01:56A smaller character, a supporting character, doesn't matter.
01:59Those are important moments of storytelling for me.
02:04This film has a very large ensemble cast.
02:08It's hard to identify who is the lead.
02:11I feel like, yeah, they all kind of take the lead at different moments in the film.
02:19So, writing them, trying to give them a unique voice and a cool voice in their own special way is very important to me.
02:34So, as I write, I just, as the characters start talking, I allow them to kind of create their own voice in a way.
02:46This is more powerful than the space shuttle that flew to the moon.
02:52People are easy to manipulate.
02:55And manipulating them has never been more fun.
02:58The dialogue is really important to me.
03:07And I feel like as I'm writing dialogue, even if I, I definitely go into it with intention of who that character is.
03:16But I have a lot of fun writing them, interacting with each other.
03:22Like, I spend a lot of time writing their conversations and then shrinking it down.
03:29And it's through their conversations that I allowed the characters to really find who they are and their voice.
03:36Because I just kind of have fun in my head.
03:38Like, a lot of times as I'm writing, I'm talking aloud.
03:41And I'm trying to put myself in both characters and just have conversation.
03:46Because through that conversation, you know, different responses and just different things are said that are special, unique characteristics of those characters.
03:57And then also, as I'm talking aloud, I try to kind of change my voice or try and change.
04:04That's mental.
04:07Yeah, yeah.
04:07Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:10We're going to put it in.
04:10Maybe be careful.
04:11Yeah, I'm totally.
04:12He's okay.
04:13He's fine, guys.
04:14I'm totally crazy.
04:15But yeah, I absolutely try and be and kind of act as that person.
04:21So that way, you know, when I have, you know, when I have, like, Banks getting crazy mad, you know, I'll try and think, like, okay, well, how's Poppy going to respond?
04:31You know, and when she says this, like, how is Banks going to respond to that?
04:34We were just talking about that yesterday.
04:37Not that you were crazy.
04:38Mic to the mouth.
04:39Mic to the mouth.
04:39Not that you were crazy, but that's fine.
04:42You can talk about me being crazy.
04:43What can I say about Poppy?
04:45I love Poppy.
04:46Poppy really does exist.
04:47I feel like I have, like you said, like she's someone that you can see in Los Angeles walking about, like, you know, walking into a room, taking up the space and all eyes on her.
04:57But she doesn't necessarily need that.
04:59But yeah, I feel like Poppy, I feel like Poppy, while she was very invincible and knew exactly what she wanted and knew how to get it at all times.
05:08She also had her flaws.
05:10She also had her flaws and she had her insecurities.
05:11And so it was like playing a balance of those two things.
05:14And also, you know, I did a little bit of research because I wanted to see what all the women who are in this cosplay world, they look like and they put so much love and effort into their looks.
05:27And it's such a part of them.
05:29And Poppy just plays these different versions of herself, according to everyone, who she's talking to and who she's with.
05:36But, you know, the insecurities will always be there.
05:39She's never she's never invincible.
05:41And so that's why when she is faced with and I won't reveal what happens, but yeah.
05:46But when she is faced with, you know, questioning how she truly feels about herself and if she can trust the things around her.
05:54Yeah, she she behaves as any normal human would.
05:59And then everything that follows that.
06:02Reality is about to get really confusing.
06:11Where do I go with this guy?
06:20I have to be careful what I say here.
06:24Exactly.
06:25Oh, it's it can get sticky.
06:26But no, I think as at the age I am, the point of my career that I am, I won't even consider a role unless it makes me nervous when I read the script.
06:39And there there always has to be something about the role that is intimidating to me or something that I've I've never been able to do before.
06:49Was it the kilt here?
06:50What's that?
06:50Was it the kilt?
06:51We'll go with that.
06:52Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
06:53It was the kilt.
06:54Yeah, it was the kilt.
06:55I'm trying to get you an out here.
06:57A kilt in like 40 degree weather, by the way.
07:00It was it was it was so cold.
07:03This poor man, like, yeah, endured a lot for that kilt.
07:08Go on.
07:08Yeah, I like the kilt.
07:11I live in New York City.
07:13There's a man on the G train in Brooklyn that I have seen for eight or nine years.
07:20And Banks was loosely based on this gentleman.
07:23And and I've known from the first time that I saw that guy that eventually I would base some a role on on that guy.
07:30And it finally happened.
07:32But yeah, I would say it was supposed to be something with Poppy.
07:38You know, I think he realizes that she's out of his league and he's she's not.
07:47She loves him.
07:48She really loves him.
07:49He's lucky to have her.
07:50He provides her with things that he thinks makes her happy.
07:53And he's he's more vulnerable than than what he appears to be.
07:59I have a fun thing to add to.
08:01So this I guess could be inspired by the person that you took some influence for your character.
08:06But the first day on set with Michael, excuse me, he shows up and he's ready to rock and roll.
08:15Right.
08:15He's ready to rock and roll.
08:16We had we had really shot a few things.
08:19He comes on the set.
08:20And I remember I so there's like a bowl of almonds on the coffee table and in front of him and Poppy.
08:26And he's in and he's in a kind of like a heated conversation with with a stiletto character.
08:32And I don't know.
08:33I don't know if you remember this.
08:35I don't know how much you were in headspace, but he sits down.
08:37We had like just a brief.
08:40It's a tight schedule when you're on a super indie film and whatnot.
08:43So didn't have much time to do like we didn't do any rehearsals.
08:46I didn't have a whole lot of time to like go through stuff with you.
08:48He was just like, you get it.
08:49You're you're a pro.
08:50You understand the character.
08:51We chatted.
08:52And he sits down.
08:52I remember you like we start rolling and you immediately grab the almonds and you start throwing them aggressively at stiletto.
09:00And I'm just watching do this.
09:01I'm like, OK, well, all right.
09:03Let's settle down.
09:05You are a madman.
09:07Maybe cut that out for SAG.
09:09I really appreciate that.
09:18This is always a bad guy.
09:35You're 바로.
09:36See you next time.
09:37Bye.
09:37Bye.
09:38Bye.
09:38Bye.
09:38Bye.
09:39Bye.
09:39Bye.
09:39Bye.
09:40Bye.
09:40Bye.
09:41Bye.
09:41Bye.
09:42Bye.
09:42Bye.
09:44Bye.
09:45Bye.
09:46Bye.
09:47Bye.
