older model
Transcript
00:00Okay, so today we have the Acer laptop, the old kind with the DVD-ROM in it, and the USB
00:15are both shot on the right side.
00:19And, of course, the first to go was this other one on the left side.
00:32So I just ordered another part.
00:38Now this is for, let's see, find the model number, I think it's the 5, well, for example,
00:56the 531, I remember, just hit the F2 when you boot up and it'll tell you the model number.
01:04So I think the 530 and the 730 are the same thing, but you can look at the picture before
01:14you buy it.
01:17So the first thing I'm going to do, a lot of things broke on this, but it still works.
01:31Take the battery out, you just, I already have done that, hit that switch, pop right out.
01:41Now some of these screws are longer than the other, and you want to make sure you put the
01:50same length screws in, cause you don't want, when you put them back, the screws back, them
01:58popping out of the keyboard or anything like that.
02:09I actually have a MacBook that I have some videos on.
02:19And the USB went in that, but the headphone jack works, and I like the sound card for watching
02:26movies.
02:28After this, the headphone jack went a long time ago, and the speakers aren't that good at
02:37all.
02:47I'm in January here, watching movies, but this I just use for looking over the YouTube account.
03:00It's a little faster, so I might end up using this once the MacBook goes.
03:13Okay, watch those magnets around the hard drive.
03:18If you get a big enough magnet next to the hard drive, you'll fry the hard drive.
03:26I don't want to hear it clicking and all.
03:29So we're just going to take, I haven't even had screws, and leave that one set.
03:46And take the RAM out.
03:50Memory, not sure if you have to take the wireless card out.
04:02Once I get into it, I'll know more.
04:03I've got to take the keyboard out.
04:10Now right here, where the battery comes out, there's one, two, see those are the very small
04:27screws.
04:28So you don't want to try to put a big screw into that space.
04:38Not always on laptops anyhow, the screw near the hinges are usually bigger.
04:47See how that, the length on that, I'll put it down so you can see it.
04:56It's longer than say, let's get one of these.
05:08Well that might be even the same size because it's the front, you know.
05:23Screwdriver will help, okay, and that little panel comes off, and we're sliding the DVD-ROM out.
05:43There's that panel, okay, still haven't taken out the Wi-Fi card.
05:54Then check all the holes.
06:02Now let's try to get that keyboard out.
06:07Now with the keyboard on this type, there's like one screw in the back we already got,
06:14and you go up to these little tiny ridges, push them in, and then flip the screwdriver until
06:28it pops out.
06:29So you got one, so you push it in, see how it pops up.
06:39And there's three of these, maybe even a smaller screwdriver than this.
06:47Once you get under there, you don't want to pull it off too quick because there could be
06:53another screw you missed, or remember the ribbon cable is in there.
06:58Yeah, I'm going to check for a screw there, one sec.
07:03This here is like little tiny, like the top of the 9-volt connectors, but smaller.
07:11They got to go straight on.
07:13I just took those two off, and you'll pry up on the card.
07:20Just got to put the light down.
07:27Sometimes they pop right out, or they may even have a screw, and there it is.
07:37One tiny screw.
07:39The Wi-Fi card, I just took that out, see that, let it go, pull up on the card, remove
07:51the card.
07:52Just remember, the black was on the left side, and the white was on the right side, as you
08:02put it straight down with the sticker showing.
08:06At least on this one, anyhow, sometimes you'll see a positive mark if you get out a magnifying
08:16glass or something.
08:18But, okay, and there is the ribbon cable.
08:28So we're just going to ease up on the sides of that white, see if we can get the light
08:38there.
08:41Just take the screwdriver or your fingernail, push up a little.
08:47It's the plastic clamp.
08:48Now, these things are fragile.
08:50You don't want to break it, but you got to push up on each side to get that keyboard out.
08:59See how fragile this is.
09:00If that breaks, I remember having a hell of a time to just goes in snug, so make sure you
09:06know it's face up, face down.
09:08I remember having to use duct tape to transfer the keyboard, then the keyboard kept not working,
09:15you know, kept malfunctioning when I was using it and had to open it back up again.
09:23Okay, so the next thing is either that plastic tool you see or thick fingernail.
09:52You run it down and you'll hear clicks.
09:57See, that's the Wi-Fi switch.
10:01And you go all the way around until you hear the clicks and that top half should come right
10:18out.
10:19Make sure there's no screws on this top half.
10:26I can show you a good look at it.
10:29There's another one of the ribbon cables.
10:34Got to make sure we get that.
10:45And not just pull it out, but yep, there it is.
10:51It's a little, another brown or black.
10:56Pry up a little bit on each side and it should slide right out like that.
11:04And you don't want to damage those metal tabs too or you're going to have to buy another ribbon
11:09cable for that purpose.
11:12Okay, so there's the clicks.
11:16And there's another one right here.
11:21Make sure you look all along.
11:24See, that's for the mouse.
11:26And here's the third.
11:33There's usually plastic on the ribbon cable.
11:36So you just pinch it, the plastic, and pull it back.
11:41And that's it on this one.
11:44But make sure you check that.
11:46See, that's coming right off now.
11:49And I'll make sure that the, by putting the phone down, I'll make sure the front comes off
11:59easy and there's no more screws.
12:01There it is, the hidden screw.
12:04I didn't see that till now.
12:08Can't zoom in on it, but yep, right next to the M2.5x5.
12:15So that's the actual size of the screw.
12:19Once I get that out, it'll probably fall off.
12:24This is all precision now.
12:26Take your time.
12:28You don't want to bust that plastic.
12:32There it is.
12:35See, we didn't need to take out the Wi-Fi card for this repair anyhow.
12:42And there it is.
12:44The USB.
12:47So, look for screws.
12:50I don't know if there was one in there originally, because this has been a part before.
12:56But let's match it up and get the new one out.
13:05Or this probably could be a new one or out of an old laptop and they refurbished it because
13:15they don't sell these anymore.
13:19The ribbon cable looks nice though.
13:21So, it doesn't look like any of those metal tabs were in it and clamped before.
13:32So, this comes out easy enough.
13:37And there's another one of those plastic.
13:42Try to slide that out as easy as possible.
13:49There's a little glue.
13:51Now, I do have that glue stick.
13:53But I don't think I'm going to worry about that now.
14:00I just want to backtrack on what I did so I don't forget.
14:06So, there also could be a little adhesive tape thing.
14:17Yeah, this looks like it was pulled from a unit just by where the marks are.
14:23And this looks aged.
14:25But the USB looks good.
14:29So, we put that down.
14:34Hold on.
14:37I'm going to need two hands to put the new one back in.
14:40Now, you can see that line.
14:43Let's try to get light in there.
14:48You can see that line on the metal tabs.
14:57That line goes all the way in so you don't see the metal tabs.
15:03At least on this one, anyhow.
15:06And I'm going to push the clamp on each side.
15:16Because if one of those notches is off, then something in the USB won't work.
15:22See, it even looks like it's diagonal there.
15:32So, I'm going to put this down and do it right.
15:34One sec.
15:37And then you got the brown clip flush against the...
15:40I wish I had better focus.
15:46Flush against the white plastic holder like it was, like the old one was.
15:56All right.
15:57Instead of using the glue gun, I just took a piece of scotch tape to hold that down.
16:05And now, let's reverse the process.
16:07We're going to put the keyboard or whatever we did last, we're going to reverse it and do that now.
16:16See, now the screen makes it top heavy.
16:20So, I've got to hold it down.
16:23That's another job all on its own.
16:26It's to remove this bezel when you have to change the screen.
16:31Okay.
16:32One click at a time.
16:41All the way around.
16:48You might miss one at first.
16:50I want to make sure those power lights are visible.
16:58Now, I'm going to do the three ribbon cables again.
17:05Take notice once again here.
17:08The white clip went in by itself.
17:14And therefore, the ribbon cable is not going in.
17:20So, this is very...
17:21I mean, I've done laptops for many years, but...
17:25So, this has got to come out both sides.
17:33And then, without breaking...
17:38There it is.
17:39See that?
17:40You can't see the metal parts.
17:43Now, I'll push the...
17:49Evenly.
17:50If I didn't have the camera in the hand, then...
17:53I would put a finger on each side.
17:58So, the mouse will work.
18:00The clicker will work.
18:04There's one, two.
18:07Now, let's get the big one.
18:09The keyboard.
18:14Put that back in.
18:17So, first, I put down the brown part where...
18:23You can see how those brown notches are going to fit into the square.
18:29See, they're up on top.
18:35And I put that in, but I have it back a bit so I can slide my ribbon cable from my keyboard in straight.
18:44Okay.
18:45I can't get the light on it, but I'm putting it in.
18:49See, we can't see it.
18:54Now, evenly.
18:57Left side.
18:59I'm going to put the cam down, and I'm going to, with both my forefingers, push at the same time so it goes in evenly.
19:09And once again...
19:11Once again, not that hard.
19:13Because you can break that brown plastic thing and then it's a mess.
19:20You'll never...
19:22They don't sell the plastic thing.
19:24You would actually have to buy another motherboard.
19:27There was no way that you could cob it up.
19:31Okay.
19:32Keyboard goes back in.
19:34Click.
19:35Click.
19:36Those three clicks at the top.
19:40We can put the DVD back in, but I want to make sure I get that Wi-Fi card in first.
19:47Now, putting on the clips again.
19:52Remember this.
19:54Keep trying lightly.
19:56Because if it's at an angle and you just want to push it hard, you can damage that clip.
20:05It's a very delicate clip.
20:07It's got to go straight on, but like the other one, it took me a couple tries.
20:14See, the wire's got to be straight, directly horizontally straight and even before it pushes on.
20:25See that?
20:26And then it just stays.
20:28See how even that is?
20:31Now, I'm going to put the cover on her.
20:35Yeah, I don't want to mess around with that.
20:38It takes too long.
20:39The RAM goes in at an angle.
20:43And then pushes down.
20:49You can see the notches where they should line up.
20:54Now, I'm going to get that screw first.
20:57The one that was hidden.
21:00Next, the DVD-ROM goes back in.
21:07And you'll see, right there, that'll keep it from coming out.
21:16And I think there's a little picture of a keyboard.
21:20Well, one of them may go into the keyboard.
21:26I'm not sure which one.
21:28Hard drive slides back in.
21:31I have to get some screws for that later.
21:38But remember, don't put nothing in the end here because the lid's going on.
21:47So you should check where the holes are.
21:52See how I put a screw in there?
21:55Now, that's got to come out because the cover should go on first.
22:12Put the tabs in first.
22:18Then it should click shut.
22:34Oh, I think there's some.
22:36Yep, there's another tab at the end there.
22:39So the tab's not only got to click that.
22:47It's almost got to bend the cover to put the left side in.
22:55And the rest will follow through.
23:02And we'll put one in here.
23:06Let's move it back on the table.
23:09I just don't want to forget any screws.
23:16And one in the end.
23:24One here in the corner.
23:28And we're going to try it out.
23:31It's been so long since I've had a good USB port.
23:41Okay, that's it for now.
23:43Let's go plug it in.
23:45Okay, I got it plugged in.
23:49And I just got to hit the power button.
23:53And there it goes.
23:55It's a four-way.
23:57Okay, thanks for watching the video.
24:00And we'll see you another time.
