00:00I never thought I'd say this, but you're only 81. You know, they say 81 is the new 79.
00:08After Wednesday's announcement by Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy that he would be retiring
00:12after 30 years, late-night hosts pondered the consequences of his impending departure.
00:17With Kennedy retiring, President Donald Trump now has the chance to nominate his replacement,
00:21which could give conservatives a solid majority on the Supreme Court and fundamentally change
00:25the course of the institution. On CBS's Late Show, Stephen Colbert explained why that idea
00:29it makes his blood run cold.
00:30And I would not trust Trump to fundamentally change the dessert course.
00:36And the host summed up the whole situation this way.
00:38Oh, we are supremely screwed.
00:42Over at The Daily Show on Comedy Central, host Trevor Noah noted,
00:45Trump will likely replace Kennedy with a justice who would discriminate and dismantle
00:49abortion rights and LGBTQ rights.
00:51And that sound you're hearing right now? That's Mike Pence having his first orgasm.
00:56Yeah.
00:57Eventually, Noah resigned himself to the sad fact that all is lost.
01:00It feels like all hope is dead and nothing can bring it back.
01:04But my friend Punch over here is still going to try.
01:08Also on Comedy Central, the opposition's John Klepper offered his own suggestions
01:12for who Kennedy's replacement might be.
01:14Justice Judge Jeanine Pirro.
01:16Justice Ted Nugent.
01:17Or maybe Trump appoints himself.
01:20Klepper then explained just why the current president could be right for the job.
01:23Justice Donald Trump.
01:26What could go wrong?
01:27He already loves loose-fitting clothes and controlling women's bodies.
01:31On NBC's Tonight Show, host Jimmy Fallon addressed Kennedy's announcement in his opening monologue.
01:35Today, Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy announced he was retiring,
01:38which means President Trump will pick his own justice, Fallon said.
01:42When asked which judge he'll choose, Trump said,
01:44either Adam Levine or Blake Shelton.
01:46They're both a little edgy for different reasons.
01:48As for Kennedy himself, Fallon noted that his transition into retirement might not be too much of a shock.
01:53He's 81 years old, so he's going to go from sitting around in a robe all day
01:56to sitting around in a robe all day.
01:58So it's going to be very difficult.
02:00Later on NBC, late-night host Seth Meyers also pointed out
02:03that Kennedy's retired life wouldn't be all that different from his working one.
02:06Justice Kennedy, what are you doing retiring, man?
02:09You have a great job where you barely work,
02:12you get to wear a robe all day and give your opinions on stuff.
02:15That basically is retirement.
