"Cherry was my fantasy choice [for the part]. We sent her the script, she wrote a lovely email back and she said yes almost immediately," star Elisabeth Moss tells THR.

00:00Hulu's The Handmaid's Tale has cast a pivotal character from Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel
00:14for its upcoming second season. The Hollywood Reporter can exclusively confirm that Emmy
00:19winner Cherry Jones will guest star as Holly, the feminist mother of Elizabeth Moss' character
00:24June, aka Offred. Up until now, the character has only been mentioned in passing during
00:29flashback scenes, but we now know she'll appear in episode 3 of season 2. Season 2 is still in
00:34production, so it's unclear if Jones will return for more than one episode. Jones' character,
00:39Holly, is described as an outspoken feminist and a judgmental but loving mother to June.
00:43In Atwood's novel, on which the drama is based, Offred often reflects on her mother's feminist
00:49causes and how, in the past, she found them to be extreme, an opinion that slowly shifts as the
00:54world of Gilead unfolds. In that version of the story, Holly's precise, present-day fate
00:59remains unclear to Offred, but she surfaces during a Handmaid's training video shown to the girls
01:04at the center, hinting that she wound up in the colonies where radiation probably killed her.
01:08As the season 2 trailer reveals, the colonies factor more heavily into the second season,
01:12but what remains unclear is whether Holly will appear in the past or present-day storyline,
01:17or if she'll play a role in the colony's world-building. Plans to incorporate June's mother into the story
01:22have been developing since the first season, but showrunner Bruce Miller said he was unable to find
01:27appropriate time to include a character with such a large impact.
01:30Casting June's mother was of the utmost importance to Moss, who is also an executive producer of the show.
01:36The actress maintains that she had been asking about and pushing for casting on the role since the beginning,
01:41ultimately bringing Jones' name to the table. Moss told THR,
01:45Jones joins previously announced season 2 guest stars Sydney Sweeney and Marissa Tomei. For Jones,
01:57meanwhile, The Handmaid's Tale becomes her latest TV role, following ABC's American Crime,
02:03Netflix's Black Mirror and Amazon's Transparent. The Handmaid's Tale returns with its first two of 13 new
02:08episodes on Wednesday, April 25. New installments will unroll weekly following its premiere.
