In Peru, the armed forces were deployed to the border area with Chile after the unelected president José Jerí declared a state of emergency in Tacna. Uniformed officers arrived at the Santa Rosa border complex to strengthen surveillance, coordinate joint operations, and improve response capacity at immigration checkpoints. The state of emergency was declared to provide peace of mind in the face of the risk of unauthorized migrants entering the country. For his part, the Minister of the Interior arrived in the tension-ridden area to coordinate additional measures with representatives of the army, the national police, migration, as well as other regional and local institutions and authorities.
