At the 2025 Met Gala carpet, Audra McDonald chats with THR and describes how it felt when she heard she was nominated for her 11th Tony Award, making her the most nominated performer in Broadway history. Plus, she talks about how the Met Gala supports the arts.

00:00I want to ask you about another reaction, because you just made history.
00:04Where were you when you found out? What was your reaction?
00:07Just profound gratitude.
00:11Profound gratitude.
00:13And so happy that I get to do what I love for a living.
00:16It's the only thing I know how to do.
00:17So thank goodness they're letting me do it and they're paying me to do it.
00:21For the Tonys?
00:23Well, you know, we have to work.
00:26I mean, that's the thing about Broadway performers.
00:28Yeah, this is my night off. Yeah, eight shows a week is what we're doing.
00:32So we'll be doing a show that day as well.
00:34So how you prepare for it, you just, you know, try and have fun and enjoy the ride along the way.
00:40Why was it important to show up tonight?
00:42Oh, to support this in, well, first of all, to support the arts in every possible way.
00:47And this is, we remind ourselves, this is an incredible fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum.
00:51And art is necessary. Art is resistance. Let's never forget that.
00:55And this particular, I think, oh, I just saw that that was Debbie.

01:01She's too busy. She's too busy being pretty.
01:04But yes, I can't remember what I was saying. No, no, art is resistance.
01:07And in this day and age, the fact that super fine black dandyism is what we are celebrating tonight,
01:15and uplifting and recognizing Hallelu.
