Matt Smith shares his experience filming 'House of the Dragon' season 2 without many scenes with Emma D'Arcy compared to last season. Plus, he reveals the moment he wanted to take on the role of Daemon after initial hesitation.
00:00Congratulations on season two. I have to say you had a lot of scenes with Emma last season and it seems like you guys are sort of apart this season. So how did that affect the experience of creating season two for you?
00:10It was a shame. I miss them terribly because I love being around them and not only are they a wonderful actor, they're a wonderful person to sort of knock about with every day. So I miss Emma.
00:19But it was what the story required. You know, Damien is off on his own path trying to figure things out, sort of headfirst into the dark hole of his own consciousness, into the abyss.
00:33And I think Rhaenyra feels a great sense of betrayal and it's like he's been sent off to the nether regions of Westeros to get his stuff together.
00:42Yeah, absolutely. I know you had previously mentioned that you did have some hesitation before taking on this role because of the success and everything around Game of Thrones.
00:52What was the moment that made you go, OK, this feels right. This feels like something that I want to be a part of.
00:58Well, look, I think the character of Damien had a great allure. You know, he's hugely conflicted. He's just infinitely interesting.
01:06You never really know. He's completely unpredictable. You don't quite know what version of him you're going to get every day when he wakes up in the morning.
01:12And I think the opportunity to sort of play around in those gray areas felt creatively really interesting.
01:18And he's not the most morally righteous.
01:21No, but he has got his own moral compass in a way.
