"That's aspirational, not just for myself, but for other people, and not just in film, but in other arenas," Boseman told the Actor Roundtable.

00:00What was the toughest thing about doing Black Panther for you?
00:07For me, it was the fact that as a person of African descent,
00:12this searching for what my real culture is,
00:16living that and believing that space and showing that on screen
00:20and, you know, just being able to give that to an audience
00:24to say that I know so much about my past,
00:28I know so much about my history, which I, you know, as an African-American,
00:33I've searched for that my entire life.
00:35But to be a person that didn't have to search for it.
00:38What do you mean you've searched for that your whole life?
00:41Meaning you...
00:42Only being able to go so far back.
00:44Yeah, being able to go so far back.
00:46People say, you know, El Salvador, or you name a country.
00:50You know exactly where.
00:51You say Texas?
00:52Yeah.
00:53You know that's as far back as we can go, you know, or what?
00:56Having that as something that you're like, oh, not only do I know,
01:03but I value it.
01:05Like there's a certain patriotism to something that has never been lost.
01:09It's ancient.
01:11And being able to hold on to that,
01:13it was something that throughout the movie I was like, wow,
01:16the weight of that is something that I have to convey to the world.
01:21Because you could do that movie and it's a parody of that idea.
01:26And that is insulting.
01:28And so I think for me it was constantly wanting to convey that this is real
01:33because it is.
01:35You know, for me, it was just one of those things where I was like,
01:38we want to make a superhero movie, but that's not the most important thing here.
01:43And people will love the superhero movie if this other thing,
01:47if they get this other thing from it.
01:49I never thought I would see a studio say, yeah,
01:52we're going to put the money behind this movie with all,
01:55well, basically, you know, mostly a black cast.
01:58Sometimes we have, as African-Americans, we have the black version.
02:02And it's never as good.
02:05It never put as much into it.
02:08And so it made me, you know, more idealistic.
02:13And I think that's aspirational for not just myself,
02:16but for other people and not just in film, but in, you know, other arenas.
02:21Did you think the odds were against you growing up in South Carolina?
02:24It wasn't even a possibility.
02:26Like, you know, there was nobody.
02:28My brother actually was into the arts.
02:31He did musical theater.
02:33He danced.
02:34And so because he did that, I think I saw it as a possibility.
02:39But other than him, nobody around me saw that as a, you know, viable career.
02:46I think you should only do it if you love it,
02:49because it's not all the glitz and glamour people think it is.
02:52It's really a blue-collar job.
02:54And you work overtime.
02:57You sweat.
02:58You get hurt.
02:59You're an athlete.
03:00You're everything that is necessary.
03:03And you're pulling from things that most people don't usually deal with.
03:07You're dealing with political parts of your reality, social parts of your reality,
03:11race in a way people don't have to deal with,
03:13gender in a way people don't have to deal with on a day-to-day basis.
03:16And I think you have to want to go through that struggle.
03:18And I feel the same way about my work at that point in time as I do when my movie makes a hundred million dollars.
03:27Or a billion dollars.
03:28Or a billion dollars.
03:28How has the lack of privacy changed your life?
03:38Chad drank some water on that door.
03:40Who wants to go first?
03:46I think Chad probably has it the most intense.
03:48Yeah, yeah, go ahead, Chad.
03:50It's insane.
03:52Is that good or bad?
03:53Ultimately, there are certain things that you cherish about your normal life that are different and you're not comfortable with, obviously.
04:05But at the end of the day, I've always been very close to my family.
04:09I've always, like, really cherished my friends and it just makes you do it more.
04:14And you just can't complain about it.
04:16You take as many pictures as you can.
04:19You sign as many autographs as you can.
04:22And when it feels to you that you've given enough of yourself away, then you go, okay, that's it.
04:30And people will get upset at times.
04:32People will say, hey, you know, I supported you.
04:36Right, you've been in the rain for three hours waiting for him.
04:38But then I go, wait, you supported me when I was broke?
