Now the Lord had said to Abram:
“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.
I will make you a great nation;
I will bless you
And make your name great;
And you shall be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
And I will curse him who curses you;
And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him …

00:00And coming back to the conclusion of what's happened after the division,
00:07we see that God's response to this division was to let the peoples go into their different places
00:15so they would develop their societies.
00:18And he calls, he now begins to call out one man and his family to reveal the truth to him.
00:25And the next event which happens after the Tower of Babel is the call of Abraham.
00:32Genesis 11, we're going to close with this and look at some of the implications which follow on from it next week.
00:41But Genesis 11 verse 27, chapter 12 verse 1 says,
00:48The Lord said to Abraham, Get out of your country, from your family, from your father's house,
00:52to a land that I will show you, I will make you a great nation, I will bless you and make your name great,
00:57and you shall be a blessing. I'll bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you,
01:01and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.
01:05So Abraham departed as the Lord had spoken to him, and Lot went with him.
01:09Abraham was 75 years old when he departed from Haran.
01:13Then Abraham took Sarai, his wife, and Lot, his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered,
01:18and the people whom he had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan.
01:23So they came to the land of Canaan.
01:27You see what God's doing here?
01:30There's the mass of humanity. They want to build a tower.
01:33They want to unite against him.
01:35God then scatters them abroad, and he chooses this family and says,
01:40I'm going to work through you. I'm going to reveal myself through you.
01:43And through you, all the families of the earth are going to be blessed.
01:46So my purpose is to build through this chosen family, if you like,
01:50the means by which I can reach all the families of the earth,
01:54which is the event which takes place.
01:57So Abraham, who was living in Ur of the Chaldeans, in the center of the idolatrous society,
02:03moves up first of all to Haran in the north of Iraq.
02:06Then he moves through the Fertile Crescent down to Canaan, the promised land,
02:10the land which is today the land of Israel.
02:14And from this point on, Scripture is centered on that family, living in that land,
02:21and the people of Abraham, who had come out of him, the people of Israel.
02:28To him, he's going to reveal the true God.
02:30So what was the main, the most important thing which God revealed to Abraham,
02:34that there is one God, one created God,
02:37and the gods of the nations are but idols or false gods.
02:39So the main message which Abraham was going to bring to the world
02:43is the truth that there is one God, one created God,
02:47who you must worship and believe in,
02:49and in opposition to the idols.
02:53So, hear, O Israel, the Lord your God is one.
02:56You should worship the Lord your God with all your heart,
02:58with all your soul, with all your mind,
03:00and you should love your neighbor as yourself.
03:02The commands which God is going to give through Moses,
03:04the descendant of Abraham,
03:06and to reveal the true God through the people of Israel.
03:12And the rest of the Bible is actually the conflict between the true God,
03:16revealed to the people of God who God has chosen out of the world
03:19to be his people,
03:20and the false gods.
03:22It's the battle between Jerusalem and Babylon.
03:24And that's going on to this day.
03:29And we see also that the Bible tells us
03:31that there is a Babylon religious system
03:33which is in conflict with the people of the religion,
03:37the faith which God is giving through his people,
03:40or Baal worship, worship of false gods,
03:44gods of the nations,
03:45the idols which God condemns.
03:48And we see also that in the people of God,
03:50there's also the battle.
03:52Are you going to stay loyal to the true God?
03:55You'll create a God who's revealed himself through Abraham,
03:57and are you going to absorb the false gods
04:01into the faith which God has given to the people of Israel?
04:06And the whole Bible story is how
04:08when Israel walks in the ways of the true God,
04:10it's blessed,
04:11but it incorporates the false gods,
04:13the gods of Babylon, into its religion,
04:15then it becomes under a curse.
04:16And there's a battle which goes on right through the Bible
04:20between the false gods of Babylon
04:21and the true God of Israel.
04:24Look at that a bit more next week.
04:26You can see that it's a theme
04:27which goes right through the Bible
04:28and continues right up to the end.
04:31It's because the battle continues in New Testament times
04:34between the forces of Babylon
04:36and its religious and political system
04:38and the faith in the true Messiah
04:40who came out of Israel and Jerusalem,
04:43descendants from the true God,
04:45the God of Abraham.
04:47God of Moses
04:47and the God of our Lord Yeshua,
04:50Jesus the Messiah.
04:52And in our time,
04:53the call is to come out of Babylon,
04:55out of the false religious system,
04:57out of the political system
04:58which is based on the Babylonian principles,
05:02come to the Lord Jesus,
05:03come to God through faith in Jesus,
05:05and come into a relationship with God
05:07through the Messiah.
05:09Out of a religious system
05:10which can't save you,
05:11into a personal faith
05:13with God who has revealed himself
05:14in the person of Jesus,
05:16the Messiah.
05:17So God is naturally no longer
05:20dealing with the mass of humanity,
05:22doesn't deal with the,
05:24all the tribes around the world,
05:29but his now interest,
05:30his interest concentrates
05:32on Abraham and his descendants.
05:35And today,
05:36God is looking for a people
05:37who are going to come out of the world.
05:39They'd be individuals,
05:41but they'd come together
05:42in the body of the Messiah.
05:44And that's you and me.
05:45And so we come out of the Babylon world system
05:48into a relationship with the living God
05:50to worship and praise the true God,
05:53the God who made us,
05:54and the God who has revealed himself to us
05:56in Jesus the Messiah.
05:58And there's going to be also
05:59the battle within the body of Messiah.
06:03Martin Luther wrote a book
06:04called The Babylonian Captivity of the Church,
06:08which describes what happened
06:09as what became Roman Catholicism
06:12and other forces took over this faith,
06:16the faith which would bring us
06:17into a personal relationship with God
06:20through faith in what Jesus did to us
06:22into a religious system
06:23which would oppress and crush God's people
06:25and bring a false religious system
06:27which would distort the truth of the gospel.
06:30And we can praise God for the Reformation
06:32and for those who stood against that.
06:34And he brought about the liberation
06:36from the Babylonian captivity,
06:39if you like, of Christendom.
06:41But that Babylonian captivity
06:42is continuing and is intensifying.
06:45And one of the things
06:46that you see in the Bible
06:47is that as you come to the end days,
06:49going to be characterized
06:50by Babylon the Great,
06:53the whore of Babylon
06:53riding on the beast,
06:56symbolizing religious oppression
06:58and falsehood,
07:00and the Babylon political system
07:01of Revelation chapter 18.
07:04And God says to his people,
07:05come out of Babylon,
07:06come out of Babylon
07:07and come to me,
07:09come to Jesus the Messiah.
07:10who is the way,
07:12the truth and the life,
07:13one through whom we can come
07:14to faith in God,
07:16in Yeshua,
07:17Jesus the Messiah.
07:19I'll say a bit more about this next week
07:21because it's a very interesting subject
07:22when you look into it.
07:23And you can see this history
07:24which goes right through the Bible
07:26of the conflict between Babylon
07:28and Jerusalem,
07:29between the city of God,
07:30the city of the devil.
07:31and it's ongoing
07:34and as we get nearer
07:35to the end of days
07:36it's going to become
07:37more and more intense.
07:41And just to conclude
07:42with the words of Jesus
07:43from Matthew chapter 11,
07:47verse 28,
07:47Come to me,
07:50all you who labor
07:51and heavy laden
07:51and I will give you rest.
07:54Take my yoke upon you
07:55and learn from me
07:56for I am gentle
07:56and lowly in heart.
07:58You'll find rest for your souls
07:59for my yoke is easy,
08:01my burden is light.
08:03We're called to come
08:04to a person,
08:05a person who loves us,
08:06a person who is
08:07son of God,
08:09equal with the Father,
08:10came to the earth
08:11to redeem us.
08:12He tells us
08:13that if we come to him
08:13he's going to take
08:14our burdens upon himself
08:15as we cast our cares upon him,
08:18we cast our sins upon him
08:19and receive forgiveness of sin,
08:21eternal life
08:21and a living relationship
08:23with the living God.
08:25And he tells us
08:26to learn from him
08:27and to take his yoke upon us,
08:29take his guidance upon us,
08:31to guide us into all truth.
08:34And praise God
08:34we have a living saviour
08:35who set us free
08:37and who ever lives
08:38to make intercession for us.
08:40As we see the forces of Babylon,
08:42the forces of evil
08:43taking control
08:44of so many of our institutions,
08:47of our world today,
08:48we can look up
08:49and lift up our heads
08:50because we know
08:51the one who's
08:52set it all in motion,
08:54the one who's redeemed us
08:55and is coming back soon
08:56to sort it all out
08:57and to set up
08:58his messianic kingdom.
09:01So believe on Yeshua,
09:02Jesus the Messiah
09:02and be saved.
09:04Amen.
09:06So Lord,
09:06we do thank you
09:07that we have a living saviour.
09:08We thank you
09:09that you have redeemed us.
09:10Thank you
09:11you have the victory
09:12over the forces of darkness.
09:14And as we see
09:15the spirit of Babylon
09:16taking over
09:17the institutions of this world,
09:19including the institutions
09:20of much of the professing church,
09:23we pray, Lord,
09:23that you raise up
09:24a body of truth
09:26which can stand for you
09:27and spread your word
09:28in these last days.
