00:00Okay who's scared of heights? I am. Just the guys. Just the guys. We'll protect you, we'll protect you.
00:11Oh wow. Wow. Wow. Beautiful. This is the nut.
00:17Wait that view is crazy. I don't know what I ever imagined about Honduras but I didn't
00:32imagine this view that goes on so far. It doesn't look real does it? Marking the halfway point
00:39of the race, the third checkpoint. Valley de Angeles. Sitting at 1300 meters above sea level.
00:47It's cool altitude and fertile soil make ideal growing conditions for coffee plantations.
00:54It was in this region that the sole dinosaur fossil of Central America was discovered.
00:59The land-dwelling hadrosaur. Dylan's not feeling very well so it's a shame you can't experience this with us.
01:07It is a shame. It's neck and neck. One minute behind us. We're neck and neck.
01:12How have you guys caught up to us? I have no idea.
01:15In a shake up to the leaderboard Molly and Tyler have risen to the top.
01:20While Dylan and Jackie have clambered out of last place for the very first time.
01:25Dylan and I are shocked by us catching up. A bit nervous but we're more competitive now.
01:31I wasn't competitive at the start I suppose because I'm knowing the ropes more now.
01:36I'm feeling more confident in myself. I'm still really shocked that Harley and Roman weren't first.
01:41I was convinced they were sat their feet off. Me too.
01:43I think we were all convinced that they were way ahead of us.
01:46Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello.
01:50Finally we're here. Ladies. Wow. We're here.
01:53Oh my god. Better late than never eh. How are you guys?
01:57I won't lie we crashed quite hard on this one.
01:59The good thing is for us we can only go up.
02:04Oh.
02:06Here we go. Guys we've got a message. Uh oh.
02:09It is not possible for the race to continue through Nicaragua.
02:13What?
02:14Teams must fly to Liberia where the race will resume.
02:18That's not. That's not what it is.
02:20Where is that? Where is that?
02:21Lago is an African country.
02:23It's in Costa Rica isn't it?
02:25I've been reading my map.
02:27You've been reading your map.
02:28Don't worry about me.
02:29Alright well I guess we just need to get our groove on don't we?
02:32Onwards and literally upwards.
02:33Yeah.
02:34Let's go.
02:35Run Harley we're first.
02:36We're first.
02:37We're first.
02:38Hey hey that place can't take off without us.
02:40Alright.
02:41Pull a hammy mate.
02:42Go on.
02:55As permission to film in the neighbouring country of Nicaragua was not granted.
03:01Teams will resume the race just 90 kilometres away from its border.
03:06In Liberia, Costa Rica.
03:10Are you ready for a Costa Rican experience of a lifetime?
03:15I am.
03:16Yeah.
03:17With just eight minutes separating the top three teams.
03:20Alright dad.
03:21Costa Rica.
03:22Let's find a spot.
03:23Yeah.
03:24Maybe up here.
03:25They learn their next destination.
03:27Sit on our backs dad.
03:29Bagdad.
03:34Your fourth checkpoint is Bocas del Toro.
03:37Bocas del Toro.
03:39Toro.
03:40Toro.
03:41Toro is a bull isn't it?
03:42It is a bull.
03:43Yeah.
03:44Is it in Bocca your mouth?
03:45Oh look at Panama.
03:46You could kick Costa Rica.
03:47Bocas del Toro.
03:48Bocas del Toro.
03:49Panama.
03:50Panama.
03:51Where, where?
03:52There, there.
03:53Bocas del Toro.
03:54What?
03:55Is that an island?
03:56Lying 700 kilometres away in northwest Panama.
04:00An archipelago of islands in the Caribbean Sea.
04:04Bocas del Toro.
04:05Bocas del Toro.
04:08Known for its Afro-Caribbean and indigenous cultures that have blended over generations.
04:14It draws holiday makers to its pristine beaches, diverse reefs and rich rainforests.
04:21To get there, teams must pass through Costa Rica.
04:24A nation smaller than Scotland, yet home to 5% of the world's biodiversity.
04:34More than half a million species thrive across its ecosystem.
04:39With travel and living costs that rival Western Europe, this could be their most expensive leg yet.
04:49It's looking like the major cities in Costa Rica are quite well connected by roads.
04:55Mm-hm.
04:56Teams can travel inland early, needing to make multiple connections for the reward of remote adventure.
05:03Or follow the Pacific coast, where dense jungle encroaches upon popular beach towns.
05:10It offers faster transport, but a longer route to the checkpoint.
05:16Okay.
05:17So, when I think about Costa Rica, I think about the incredible wildlife.
05:20It might be quite nice to see some incredible animals.
05:23Like a jungle experience.
05:24Yeah.
05:25There's nothing else going to particularly crawl on you.
05:27Yeah.
05:28No, I don't need that.
05:29Me and nature, it's just, we don't work. It doesn't go together.
05:34But I think I fantasise over the idea of, like, being like Indiana Jones.
05:38You know, travelling the world, saving people.
05:41Ty Jones.
05:42No, I don't really have a ring to it, but still, we can work on that.
05:45We can whiz it, following the Pacific coastline.
05:48Mm-hm.
05:49And then stay somewhere in the jungle.
05:51And then just straight buzz it to the checkpoint.
05:53It's long, though.
05:54But you'd much rather be jumping on one expensive long bus from there to there
05:59than doing stop and stop along the Caribbean, trying to do connections.
06:05Seeking a wild Costa Rican adventure, the couple will follow Tyler's plan
06:09to race down the Pacific coast to Puerto Jimenez,
06:13the gateway to the untamed jungle of the Golfo Dulce.
06:17Wow, this is the hottest bus in the whole of Costa Rica.
06:21Isn't it?
06:22Like, he's got the heating on.
06:25Just seven minutes behind.
06:27OK, let's think this through.
06:29Anita and her father, Bal.
06:31I think let's go towards the Caribbean, yeah?
06:34Yeah.
06:35But away from where everybody goes.
06:36Explore the country a little bit.
06:37Yeah, definitely.
06:38And I think we should go and stay with some real people.
06:41Yeah, we haven't done anything like that.
06:42Yeah, let's get the guidebook.
06:44OK, eco-resort at Rancho Margo.
06:47Nestled just 40 minutes from La Fortuna.
06:50OK, that sounds like a plan.
06:56One minute in their wake.
06:57How are you feeling?
06:58I'm feeling good.
06:59And planning on heading in the same direction, Dylan and his mum Jackie.
07:04We haven't done the Caribbean side.
07:06I really want us to do the Caribbean side.
07:08Yeah, that'd be cool.
07:09Seeing all the turquoise sea and everything,
07:12I think that'd be so beautiful.
07:13And we haven't ever experienced wildlife in their natural environment.
07:17That's true.
07:18Except for Isle of Wight with the squirrels.
07:20Yeah.
07:21But that's not the same.
07:22I think we need to get to San Jose, the main city,
07:26and get a bus from there.
07:27San Jose today.
07:29Oh, we've got a good plan.
07:30We've got a plan.
07:31Oh, average.
07:32Oh, my bitch.
07:33I think mine and my mum's secret weapon will be kind of like our under-the-radar dark-horseness.
07:39They'll probably think we're not a threat, but we'll surprise people.
07:44Let's get out of here.
07:45Let's get out of here.
07:46Let's get out of here.
07:47Hablo Inglés?
07:48Buskamos, uh, otro bus para la fortuna.
07:51Primero tiene que ir a Cañas.
07:52De Cañas a Tirarán, Tirarán.
07:53Muchas gracias.
07:54There we go.
07:55Two changes.
07:56Yeah, two changes.
07:57Three buses.
07:58Three buses.
07:59Three changes they said.
08:00That's okay.
08:01That's fine.
08:02bus going to Kenya all right okay as I got older I'm thinking my stamina levels are gonna be a
08:08challenge oh is it back all right dad yeah yeah it's just straight enough you've never said you
08:13were tired ever we'll keep an eye on you though keep him in brown sauce and instant coffee are
08:22you calm yeah Anita and Bal begin their multiple bus journeys through the disconnected Highlands
08:29aiming for an eco resort in El Castillo hopefully all going to plan fingers fingers crossed I may
08:39have a question for you looking to go to torture girl girl yeah yeah Dylan and Jackie are also heading
08:48inland but utilizing the capital of San Jose instead to get to the Caribbean coast I need to get my
08:56glasses on let me show it just wait show my age you have to go to the terminal del Caribe in San Jose
09:05and go to La Pavona that's where you get the boat to go to Tortuguero okay La Pavona when I was young
09:16I was put a year behind at school I remember feeling not particularly bright and um that
09:24definitely knocked my confidence you will see alligator really oh my gosh that's going to be amazing I
09:33think that set me back in life and maybe I should have and could have achieved more really appreciate
09:42all your help it wasn't me it was uh you take the stress away pushing myself now it's not too late to do it well done you got a lot
09:51of info there and I've even got the prices as well damn it's so expensive
09:56I don't even want to talk about how far ahead I think the others are where are we going
10:05last to resume the race they're just all so far ahead of us it makes me feel sick seven hours behind
10:11siblings Roman and Harley Moon we're in Costa Rica it's gonna be expensive everywhere so we're gonna
10:19have to make some good money twice and move look we're last yeah Tamarindo is the safe bet it is
10:26near we could get there tonight and start early and the pay is good and then we'd be free to move
10:32yeah get to San Jose and then we just peg it the rest of the way yeah let's do that then yeah let's do
10:38it we need a ride to Tamarindo bruh let's see if we can hitchhike our way god I hope this works
10:45this leg is just strategy we want to make some money move as quick as we can Harley get your sign
10:53out yeah I did see some good-looking surfers going to Tamarindo so hopefully one will pick me up
11:01no say okay no problem which is yes okay he doesn't know having traveled 70 kilometers on a
11:13succession of buses Anita and Bal are yet to find an onward connection to the eco-resort
11:18hola senor la fortuna no no okay no we can a taxi negotiate I don't think it's worth it it'll blow
11:32out daily budget completely do you want to hitchhike what are you thinking dad you look worried
11:39dad yeah yeah okay why are you worried I don't know I don't know this I'm just a bit tired that's
11:44not oh wow today I'm feeling really weak yeah you're feeling weak today I'm done nothing I feel so
11:56helpless today do you ever think about your dad's mortality no never my parents are invincible
12:05they're immortal but you're holding me up as if no we're a team I've not really considered it
12:14because in my mind he's mr. youthful and energetic I will get us there dad don't worry I'll do the
12:23talking please somebody anybody growing up I was always everyone's helper
12:29he's trying so hard in here my mom wanted me to help her in the kitchen I would do that if my dad
12:37needed me to help him change a tire I would do that definitely got eldest daughter syndrome you know
12:44are they're all taxis they stopped yeah
12:52hola
12:53I've learned this yeah I already right El Castillo but we want to try and get to a ranch Rancho Margo
12:59well let's go try to do something let's go yeah
13:02well done well done well done I'm so proud of you you're such kind people I can't believe it thank
13:17you so much I cannot thank you enough how are you feeling proud of it
13:22you all right dad yeah
13:26you're gonna make me cry sunglasses on sunglasses on why dad is emotional my daughter she works so
13:43hard and you know makes me really proud of it it's all right we're getting that yeah yeah be all right
13:51Anita she's very caring and very thoughtful she'll put other people before herself there's no ifs and
14:06buts with that thank you so much we can't thank you enough don't worry you're gonna get to rest this
14:14evening dad I can see it's been a tiring one today hasn't it a beautiful place
14:20after a seven-hour journey covering only 130 kilometers Anita and Bal have
14:26finally reached El Castillo this is indescribable whoa
14:36this is amazing it's worth it now it's amazing well done Anita thanks dad thanks for carrying me
14:48today honestly so I really appreciate me carrying me now oh it's all right I'm happy to carry you
14:59I've never really seen my dad cry he's really revealing a lot more
15:29of himself with me today's the first day on this whole trip where he's looked worried and tired
15:35but I guess the reality is he's 68
15:59I only put it down once so I forgot that you can't put toilet roll down the toilet and the
16:08water has risen a lot so Tyler's currently plunging it thanks Ty we missed the first bus out of here
16:18because he put toilet roll down the toilet and I've had to plunge it that's a new low yeah it's not my best
16:23work sorry as the only team opting to travel along the Pacific Coast Molly and Tyler have spent the night in the beach town of
16:33Haco and now plan to continue their 270 kilometer journey to Puerto Jimenez
16:40right we'll go again 230 kilometers northwest
16:46your hair's getting thicker in the humidity
16:50it's got an Ace Ventura yeah it's a look with the mustache
16:55I just don't think I care enough like you said this morning have a shower
17:00no but that was for the benefit of all of us I gave myself a sponge bar before cutting inland Roman and
17:07Harley Moon are stopping early to work I never thought I'd be knitting monkey bridges they're
17:14joining local conservationists Andres and Albert who build canopy bridges by hand to help monkeys move
17:21safely from traffic power lines and growing urbanization what type of monkeys will be
17:27using our bridges the mono so we all are is how the monkeys how do you sleep it must
17:34agree all is crucial in real those animals you know that those Carlos me yeah well help you see
17:42it's say hello I'm gonna say no much but then almost I key how but it's got way more skill than me
17:50get it seriously don't tell you not the problem I get on sometimes I feel like I'm doing a good job
17:58and then sometimes I think this looks terrible I've always been driven I started working at quite a
18:06young age the goal has always been find a job that you're passionate about and give it
18:12everything it's amazing how much care it takes if he hasn't guessed we don't work in DIY
18:18I'm really happy in my work life working on my business directing commercials for brands I love
18:30spinning plates and love being overloaded oh but moving it is a lifestyle commitment maybe that's why I'm
18:41still single love is something I'm looking for however I don't want a relationship to defy my
18:50happiness Harley is such a hard worker I always feel like one of the reasons why we never really talk
18:56when we're at home is because she's always working that's not good enough can you make sure it's being
19:04fed in straight row because that's the issue yeah just pull it yeah that's your job because when it's
19:11not straight it doesn't cut the right length there you go she's always pushing to make herself happy
19:21through work but there's a massive part of me that just wants her to have someone that can give her that
19:27happiness without her having to do anything just for like one night a week the other person is there
19:33just to tell her I love you and and I want to do something for you because I really think she deserves
19:39it we've done quite good I think I quite like this job okay Elba is a patient man it's fantastic work
19:53that you've been doing quite literally holding up all the monkeys yeah one man holding all the monkeys
19:59yeah there is one thing that I would like to ask is there any way we could get a ride of course
20:07oh thank you so much yeah of course that money is going to be key in terms of taxis or anything else
20:14like that thank you so much we are getting a ride back towards the bus station there is a possibility
20:21to get into San Jose tonight however it might be late one of my best friends moved out here to
20:28Nassara oh Nassara really I can totally see why Costa Rica draws so many people in there yeah are
20:33you married you have a partner or no no single no kids okay I think with my lifestyle and how much
20:41I like to travel and do things but there's no way yeah yeah no I understand that completely I think I'm 35
20:49I don't really know where life is going and I'm okay with that and I just love I have a happy life and
20:54I do stuff I like I just would you want your own kids it sounds super selfish but I I don't think
21:02so I'm the complete opposite he's ready I'm ready to have kids now to me life is about have kids and
21:10have the family and try and bring them up the same way that my sister and I were brought up I didn't
21:17really know I could love two humans so much that's how I felt yesterday with my two nephews they call
21:25me Tio Andy and I'm like oh my god I haven't been I've never been called an uncle before like I was like I
21:30like even right now it's hard to express with words yeah that's lovely thank you yeah it was really
21:38uh-oh we have a flat what sadly I'm speaking the truth
21:49this is madness yeah what could possibly go wrong next
21:58I can't believe it I can't believe it you have to laugh at times do you have a spare tire yeah okay we
22:06can help you I did not see that coming I've never changed the tire before no idea what I'm doing
22:13wow it's a busy waterway I've been to Venice on the canals but that's a bit different to this
22:25the first team to make it to the Caribbean coast Dylan and Jackie have reached one of the country's
22:34most popular national parks known as the little Amazon of Costa Rica and named after the turtles that
22:41nest here each year these wetlands are home to over 400 breeds of birds and countless species from the
22:49threatened birds tapir to the tropical gar we've seen some amazing guys I'm looking out for an odd
22:58alligator Dylan oh yeah I haven't seen one yet Costa Rica's I think it's my favorite so far it's beautiful
23:08to look at okay so still it's quite magical this is definitely worth the money do you think Dylan I
23:27know you like to be fighting your money yeah all right well we're not having to change buses and things
23:32oh yeah but I'm really feeling the cost of Costa Rica oh wow that makes me feel to go around maybe
23:40looks like it might be it do you think we have arrived oh a hostel $50 we'll um go cheap on other
23:53nights my husband will have a shock to see the way I am now staying in a backpackers hotel I've never done
24:00that before it's funny I feel a sense of lightness about me now I'm not creating problems so much in my
24:12mind maybe I have changed quite a bit speak English you've got any recommendations things to do around
24:23here yesterday we have a night tour you can see animals and different plants oh wow that's cool
24:32and how much was that 25 dollars okay each or all together each yeah okay yeah a bit worried about
24:42money we spent a lot on travel to get here and we've got to just focus on racing and save money
24:50finishing third we had like a taste of joy I want to get more of that finish higher my head's fried I
24:59don't know what the hell to think look at this dinner what's that I have a bird up there oh it's amazing
25:07seeing all the wildlife on the boat journey and we may not come here again in our lives so we should
25:13grasp these opportunities I just hope we've got enough money to keep the race going at the end
25:19that's that's mine but the thing is is life's too short and if there's something just down here you can
25:24see in the evening we should see it yeah yeah you're right okay I think we would regret it let's do it
25:31Oh look at this place it's a paradise
25:47Tucked into the rain forest slopes below Aronal Volcano this off-grid paradise was elected as one of the most
25:55sustainable destinations in Costa Rica.
25:59Oh, veggie garden.
26:01It's a bit different to your veg patch, Dad,
26:03but inspiration.
26:04The idea is obviously to produce what we consume
26:08as much as we can.
26:09Oh, this is beautiful.
26:15You love gardening now, don't you, Dad?
26:16I do.
26:18The pleasure you get and the taste of this
26:21will taste 10 times better than the supermarket.
26:24This is very therapeutic, isn't it?
26:26After a day like yesterday.
26:30It was funny, because I could see that you were emotional.
26:32I could see your energy was different.
26:35I just felt like, how the hell are we going to get to this point?
26:38We got here.
26:39We did.
26:39And that was a great feeling.
26:41That's why I think it got emotional, it got us here.
26:44I think it was more than that.
26:47I don't know, just something.
26:49What I felt was, I'm a father and father.
26:52All my life, I think my job is to actually provide, lead,
26:56and make sure you're safe, do everything.
26:59And yesterday, I felt I wasn't able to help here.
27:02I just felt almost like I'm doing nothing to help my daughter.
27:06I don't think that's about me.
27:07I think that's about something in yourself.
27:09That's in myself, because all my life I've never asked for help from anybody.
27:14Yeah.
27:15I try and do it all myself.
27:16Suddenly realising, maybe sometimes I do need help myself.
27:20And yesterday...
27:21You got quite emotional.
27:23I have never, ever, ever been emotional with anything.
27:31And that was quite a surprise.
27:34I felt good, a little bit of, a bit lighter, and more myself.
27:42Maybe this journey is actually, it's about myself,
27:46and express a little bit more what's inside me.
27:50Yesterday was the maddest day.
27:53But it's in these moments that you find out what you're capable of.
27:57My mind keeps things down there, but my body says no.
28:00But we are loving it.
28:02I tell you, I won't forget this.
28:03Yeah.
28:07Thank you, Hans.
28:08Oh, thank you. Honestly, we have such a fantastic time here.
28:12I wonder if you could give us a little, a ride up there.
28:14Can we get left? Absolutely.
28:15Oh, my God!
28:16Oh, God!
28:20Right, let's do it.
28:21What we need to know now is how we get to the Caribbean coast.
28:28Ah!
28:29After a one-hour delay and finally leaving the Pacific...
28:32Thank you so much. You've been so kind to us.
28:34You're very welcome.
28:35Really appreciate that.
28:38Siblings Roman and Harley Moon are hoping to travel straight to San Jose.
28:42San Jose.
28:436pm, we've missed it.
28:47Is that a bus for San Jose?
28:50No.
28:50Yes.
28:52At 7.
28:54OK.
28:559,800.
28:56Yeah, we're doing it.
28:58Got sick when you said that.
29:01We'll get there tonight.
29:03Oh, God, I was shaking, man.
29:06I'm just hoping for some luck.
29:10After a nine-hour journey to Puerto Jimenez, Molly and Tyler are now the closest team to Panama.
29:16My eyes are just so wide, like, I'm ready for anything to jump out of me.
29:24Are you Jim?
29:24Hi.
29:25How are you doing?
29:26Good, thank you.
29:27Please come in.
29:28Spending the night at the home of local environmentalist, Jim.
29:33This is so cool.
29:34We've only got one question.
29:35Yes.
29:36Is that a scorpion?
29:37Yes, it is.
29:38Yes.
29:39Woo!
29:39Yeah, I want to let you know that we found this right next to your bed that you guys are going to sleep.
29:47Yeah, this is what we get inside of this house.
29:49Oh, my God.
29:51So, let me show you where is your room.
29:53It's inside of a really magical tree.
29:54OK.
29:55Follow me.
29:55Awesome.
29:56Let's go.
29:56All right.
29:57Hold on.
29:57T-cell be right there.
29:58Right.
30:00Good to go.
30:01Get ready.
30:02The idea of me being out in the wilderness, in the middle of nowhere.
30:06Do you want a head torch?
30:07I feel that will probably be the toughest part for me.
30:10I've got all the gadgets for camping, but you will not see me in a tent.
30:16I've dropped my torch in there.
30:20Oh, my days.
30:21What are you looking at?
30:22The spider.
30:24I've got so many torches.
30:26I've got like 16 LED ones.
30:28I've got an underwater torch, like little FBI ones and like little pen ones as well.
30:34I will never get lost in the dark.
30:35Wow.
30:37Oh, it's an actual tree house.
30:39This is mad.
30:41Welcome home.
30:42OK, now I'm really excited.
30:44Bye bye.
30:44Wow.
30:45Hey.
30:46I feel like I'm actually going to like it in a weird way.
30:49Yeah, I don't know how much.
30:51I'm on the same page as you right now.
30:53Oh, are you actually still not feeling it?
30:55I'm a bit shook.
30:56Yeah.
30:57My man's got a scorpion on his dining table.
31:00That's very true.
31:00What's that about?
31:02Do you see what I'm saying?
31:03Yeah.
31:03If it was caught in this tree house, I don't really want to catch another one tonight.
31:08When I thought about coming to the jungle, I thought, ah, cute wildlife animals.
31:13Now, it's dawned on me that I'm surrounded by a million bugs.
31:18I mean, some people call them irrational fears.
31:22They're more scared of you than you are of it.
31:24Well, of course you're going to say that because you're not scared of spiders.
31:28I think I'm going to need to go and get some duct tape or another mosquito net or something,
31:32because, I mean, let's be honest, I can get through that.
31:35This is, oh, God.
31:40I'm in the tree house.
31:42So, right here, there's going to be a green vine snake.
31:51See the beautiful pointy face?
31:53Oh, yeah.
31:54Isn't that going to harm us whatsoever?
31:56Wow.
31:57Wow.
31:59As one team tries to steer clear of the wildlife, another has opted to meet it up close.
32:05I'd never come along here on my own, would you?
32:07No.
32:08Scary.
32:09With over 60% of Costa Rica's wildlife being nocturnal, the region boasts a hidden world that comes alive after dark.
32:18There are several types of frogs in Costa Rica, but this one, the red-eyed tree frog.
32:26Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
32:28I must say that it makes us very proud to have it.
32:31Yeah, yeah.
32:31This one has seven different colors.
32:34So, to us, it's basically representing our seven provinces in Costa Rica.
32:40We found a slut.
32:45Oh, my gosh, it's huge.
32:49Can you not see that?
32:51Wow.
32:53Tonight in the jungle felt like a nice dream, really.
32:56So magical and, like, yeah, I was in awe of everything.
33:01It's amazing how he's facing down below, do you know what I mean?
33:06That's right, yeah.
33:06I think this has been our best day.
33:09Yeah, I'm so happy we got to do it in the end.
33:15We've seen so many animals today, like, today as a whole.
33:19I think my natural instinct in the past is to maybe protect Dylan.
33:26I've never really thought about this, but maybe I have overset the mark in protecting him too much, I feel.
33:36And maybe that's what's caused his cautiousness in life.
33:41I'm actually really glad you did this.
33:43Yeah, it was worth it.
33:45I was too focused on the money.
33:46Hopefully this experience opens Dylan's eyes up to live in the moment.
33:54What a night, hey?
33:55Yeah.
33:56What a day.
34:00Amazing.
34:03I thank God that Dylan has had this opportunity and invited me.
34:08I don't think I would have done it.
34:11I would not have pushed myself out of my comfort zone at all.
34:16Which is quite sad, really.
34:24Because I've had the most amazing experience.
34:27It's amazing.
34:28San Jose, guarded by a trio of active volcanoes, the Central American capital was without street names until 2012.
34:47When directions were given using only landmarks.
34:52Good morning.
35:14No!
35:19Sticking to Roman's plan,
35:21the siblings are working for a second time this leg
35:24at a local senior community centre.
35:29You can see them laughing at me.
35:33Costa Rica has one of the fastest ageing populations
35:36in Latin America, home to one of the world's blue zones,
35:40but the proportion of centenarians is over three times higher
35:44than the global average.
35:46When we walked in, I nearly cried.
35:48They all started clapping.
35:50Oh, vaguely all emotional.
35:53It's just an overwhelming feeling of kindness
35:57that people want to look after each other when they're older.
36:01I mean, maybe one day it'll be us.
36:03Someone will give them the cleanest arm windows they've ever seen.
36:07It's muy tranquilo.
36:09I think about my own mortality quite a lot.
36:15Gloves are a bit small.
36:18Because life for me is about creating a new family.
36:22I always worry about what the future looks like.
36:25Raphaelita, en Francais, bon appétit.
36:29Want to dance?
36:31It's happy here.
36:34Who are the children?
36:36You?
36:37You?
36:38You?
36:39You?
36:40You?
36:41You?
36:42You?
36:43No.
36:44You?
36:45You?
36:46No, I'm not a child.
36:47No.
36:48But happy.
36:49LAUGHTER
36:50HE LAUGHS
36:54Roman loves to see the vision of where his life's going
36:58and how it will play out, and I don't think I have that feeling.
37:04Dancing, do you? Dancing?
37:06Yeah.
37:11I don't have any expectations of what my life should look like.
37:17Yeah. Yeah, we dance.
37:19She'll teach me.
37:21Come on, Rae.
37:27Whoo!
37:36Whoo!
37:40I just always think, what if this bit right now
37:43is the best my life will ever be?
37:46Two, three.
37:48Whoo!
37:49Whoo!
37:50Whoo!
37:52I hope us spending time together maybe
37:55allows him to keep in the present sometimes too.
38:01Whoo!
38:07Gracias.
38:08Adios.
38:09Adios.
38:10Oh, I'm sad to leave.
38:11I'm sad to leave.
38:12Yeah.
38:15Now we're...
38:17...bus station.
38:18Back to being filled with dread.
38:22Hi.
38:24Come on.
38:25Come on.
38:26Oh, my God.
38:27I've wasted my five minutes.
38:28Is that outrageous?
38:29Tomorrow, six o'clock.
38:30Hey, okay.
38:31Uh...
38:32What if we go to Limon and just get a taxi?
38:33Yeah, maybe, yeah.
38:34Because, really, we just want to get close as possible in the morning.
38:38Having missed the direct bus to the border town of Ciccaola,
38:41Harlemund plans to head to Limon to keep moving.
38:42Are there a bus to Limon?
38:43Seven blocks there.
38:44Down that way.
38:45Oh, that's taxi?
38:46Yeah, oh, my God.
38:47Right, good job.
38:48Keep it positive.
38:49Keep it positive.
38:50Keep it positive.
38:51Keep it positive.
38:52Right.
38:53Yeah.
38:54Yeah.
38:56So it's definitely, there's a taxi.
38:58Oh my God.
38:59Oh, it's missed by this bus.
39:01One way.
39:02So it goes.
39:03Well, that's the taxi.
39:04That's the taxi.
39:05All right, good job.
39:06Keep it positive.
39:07Keep it positive.
39:08Oh, my God, that's the taxi.
39:09That's the taxi.
39:10Just a taxi.
39:11How do you pick it going?
39:13It's a small blip.
39:18If we lose this leg by some distance,
39:21it's because of that moment right there.
39:24Got it.
39:29Gracias.
39:31I can see a bar.
39:33Ah.
39:35Hola.
39:36Pero limón.
39:38Gracias.
39:39Dos paletos.
39:41Por favor.
39:42Okay, well, ha, look, we get to limón.
39:43Yeah.
39:44Oh, yeah.
39:46It was balls to be so easy.
39:53What's just happened in the last 15 minutes
39:56pretty much sums up a lot of this race.
39:59Yeah, we're already last, we're already behind.
40:01That was a moment to get us right on track.
40:05Now it's down to us to start spending that cheddar.
40:10If there's a moment where we need a taxi, bang, let's do it.
40:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
40:15That's what we put in a good shift for.
40:16Yeah.
40:17We've got to do it.
40:18Maybe I'm due for a kiss on the lips,
40:20but let me tell you, it'll be shortly followed by kicking the nuts.
40:23I'm sure some of the older ladies would give you a kiss.
40:26Well, I'll take it right now.
40:28Also en route to Limón...
40:30This is definitely the way to travel instead of fast.
40:33..Dylan and Jackie are moving quickly on an 80-kilometre journey,
40:37having paid a premium to travel by boat.
40:42It costs a lot more money, but I think it's worth it.
40:45It's beautiful.
40:47I wonder whether we'll see another alligator.
40:49I feel like I've seen some, but I think there might be logs.
40:54Let's find a direct, non-stop.
40:57I'll try my broken Spanish and see where we get.
40:59135 kilometres away,
41:01Anita and Bal are still navigating a disconnected journey
41:05through central Costa Rica by bus.
41:08There are no direct buses to the border.
41:11OK.
41:12However, there's a bus from here at 4.30
41:15that gets to Limón by 6.30, and it's direct.
41:18Lemon, let's get to there, then.
41:21Door tickets, please, for Lemon.
41:24Will you take dollars?
41:26No, polonis.
41:27Sorry, we only have dollars.
41:28I can give you dollars?
41:29No, polonis.
41:31Come on.
41:32OK.
41:33Polonis.
41:34She won't take dollars.
41:35OK, you have to go to the bank, Dad.
41:37I'll come back.
41:38I'll come back.
41:39Go to the banco.
41:40OK.
41:41OK, come on, Dad.
41:42You need to get your scapes on.
41:43You need to speedy Gonzales into the bank.
41:44Go.
41:45Go, go, go.
41:46Please, Dad.
41:47It's fine.
41:49Girls.
41:50¿Dónde está el banco?
41:52El banco.
41:53El banco.
41:54El banco.
41:55OK.
41:57Just down there.
42:00I'm actually just sitting here thinking,
42:01should I have gone?
42:03Should I have gone?
42:04Because I could have just run
42:06and run back.
42:11Back's over.
42:14Why did I just send him off like that?
42:20He doesn't even speak Spanish.
42:23We were under a lot of time pressure,
42:25but no-one knows about time pressure more than my dad.
42:28He knows he has to be back here.
42:29I was born in India.
42:31I was only four years old when I came to England.
42:35Even if he has to get money changed at one of the...
42:38Why didn't we just get money changed at one of these shops?
42:43Oh, my God!
42:44I'm going towards Panama.
42:46So we're going to Lemon,
42:47then Lemon to the border.
42:52Can't see him.
42:54This is really stressful.
42:56Like, really stressful.
42:59We've got 15 minutes.
43:01I'm going to see if I can cause a disruption
43:03and make the busway and, like, beg and plead.
43:10That's our bus.
43:12Oh, God.
43:13This is a nightmare.
43:20Yeah, I know.
43:22But, yeah, it's okay.
43:23He'll be here.
43:25I need my dad back here.
43:31Hey, man!
43:37No way!
43:38Yes, Dad!
43:41Yes!
43:42Did you get some change?
43:43Yes.
43:45Oh, well done, Dad.
43:48Well done.
43:50I was so worried.
43:51I was, like, having a proper moment.
43:54Little things looking up again, Dad.
43:55And relax.
43:57Oh!
43:58You better?
43:59Yeah.
44:00No problemo.
44:05Are we going to plant a tree?
44:07Great.
44:09Molly and Tyler are still deep in the jungle of Puerto Jimenez,
44:13working off last night's stay by helping host Jim
44:16with forest conservation.
44:19Whoa!
44:20Something just...
44:21I don't know what it was.
44:22Sorry.
44:23We're good.
44:24We're good.
44:25We're good.
44:26We're good.
44:27We're good.
44:28We're good.
44:29Oh, just touched a millipede.
44:33I'm having a breakdown.
44:34But it's fine.
44:35All right?
44:36It's fine.
44:37I think you're doing a great job.
44:38I didn't know this would be, like, this much outside of my comfort zone.
44:43Mm-hmm.
44:44I don't like to be in control of things or know what I'm getting myself into.
44:47Why do you think you do need to be in control all the time?
44:52If I can control it, I feel like I can then look after the situation the best I possibly can.
44:56Yeah.
44:57When I compare it to when I was a teenager, it was on another level.
45:01I was absolutely, like, petrified of witnessing something that was completely out of my control.
45:08And all I wanted to do was put a stop to it.
45:12You feel helpless.
45:14And I just don't want to feel that ever in my life again.
45:17I was coming home from school one day, and there was, like, these three men having an argument outside my house.
45:29One of the two men throw a really weak punch to the man that was on his own.
45:36And then one of the men had a 12-inch kitchen knife in his hand.
45:40All of a sudden, it was, like, me standing there at my bedroom window at 14 and just seeing this man get, like, stabbed to death.
45:53It was one of the most horrific moments of my life.
45:57I just remember being there at the Old Bailey, just being petrified of so many factors.
46:01Like, will these people, like, be able to see me? Will they know that I'm testifying?
46:06And I just didn't really know how to process it.
46:08And it had such a knock-on effect to my mental health.
46:11I was indoors for, like, two years.
46:16It matured me really quick.
46:19And it...
46:21I guess, sort of...
46:23Oh, shit, sorry.
46:29It was just really hard.
46:30I mean, for the last 14 years, I've been proper trying to embrace that control because it's like a comfort blanket for me.
46:45And I think the reason why now it's so important for me to, like, continually...
46:49Be the protector.
46:50Be the protector and go outside. It's almost like it had the reverse effect. I'm like, okay, well, I don't want anybody else to be hurt now.
46:56I always feel that you're, like, protective of me.
47:00And, like, this is the first time in a long time where you've had no idea of what you're putting yourself into.
47:08I never once imagined travelling to this side of the world.
47:12And I think that's one of the things at the start of this I struggled with because being in a vulnerable position is not one I want to be in.
47:19Mm-mm. I was so scared.
47:20That 14-year-old would never believe that you'd be doing this.
47:26Yeah, for real.
47:30I am proud of you.
47:32I feel like this is definite fear-facing territory right now.
47:35Yeah.
47:37It's special that I get to do it with you.
47:42That's our legacy right there.
47:44That's our little...
47:45We're going to come back.
47:47What was that? Why are you scaring me like that?
47:48The rainforest is legacy.
47:51Thank you, guys, for coming.
47:53Thank you. Thank you very much, Jim.
47:54We appreciate you.
47:55So happy that we could work for you.
47:57Onwards.
47:58Onwards.
47:59Go forth, Tyler.
48:04Now, there's only two ways out of here.
48:06Even a taxi, which would be very expensive, or a boat.
48:10But Jim said the last boat has left.
48:12To leave Puerto Jimenez, the quickest way to Panama is via Golfito.
48:16But boat crossings finish by 5pm.
48:21We're going to set up shop.
48:22Yeah.
48:23And then grab the first boat out of here in the morning.
48:24Yeah.
48:25We're absolutely exhausted.
48:26We might as well just stay here.
48:27It's not far.
48:28It's only about 40 minutes away.
48:29Yeah.
48:30With the Caribbean border now shut for the day, Dylan and Jackie are choosing to bed down in Kawita.
48:43Uno room.
48:44Get it down to 50.
48:47Oh, cool.
48:48Gracias, gracias.
48:50Just 45 kilometres behind.
48:53I mean, there's a place right there, Dad.
48:55It says Hotel Big Boy.
48:57No Shady Inn, but Hotel Big Boy.
48:59Anita and Bal have finally arrived in Limón.
49:05Oh, yeah.
49:07In the same city, but pushing on.
49:09We know we can't cross today, but if we can stay in a hostel right next to the border.
49:15Roman and Harley Moon are spending the gains of their labours to travel to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca.
49:23I feel so far behind.
49:25What we do know is we just need to move.
49:28I always just think what Dad would say to me.
49:31What are you going to do?
49:32Be upset about it or get over it?
49:35Those are your two options.
49:37I need a bit of that right now.
49:38I can't see it.
49:47We need to get a move on, basically.
49:50As dawn breaks...
49:53Right, here's a pretty quick boat.
49:55We're looking to find an empty guest book at that checkpoint.
49:58See, this is the sort of energy we need.
50:00And we're there.
50:01Molly and Tyler are finally leaving the Pacific Coast and still have a 350-kilometre journey to the checkpoint.
50:09To the north, all other teams are fast approaching Panama.
50:14Taxi, six say hola.
50:2160 US dollars.
50:23Let's do it.
50:25Race, stress and adrenaline. It's unbelievable.
50:28Yeah.
50:29Bye-bye Costa Rica.
50:33Costa Rica.
50:34Hello Panama.
50:36Bocas del Toro, how much would it cost?
50:38If you want to go now, you will be $40, right?
50:41$40.
50:4240.
50:44Okay.
50:45That's okay.
50:46Let's go for it.
50:47Yeah, let's do it.
50:49The quickest route from here to the island checkpoint is via the Almirante port, where boats regularly run to Bocas del Toro.
50:57Country number?
50:59Six, is it?
51:00Panama, here we come.
51:02Here we go, border.
51:03What's the name of where we're going?
51:05Bocas del Toro.
51:07Yahoo!
51:08Vamos, vamos. Muy rapido.
51:10Checkpoint energy.
51:12We are on the home stretch.
51:14I'm in full race mode.
51:18Hola, dos Bocas del Toro.
51:24We need to go to Bocas del Toro.
51:27Right, run.
51:29Are you going to be alright, Dad?
51:30Yeah, yeah, I'm fresh with you.
51:32Let's go, go, go.
51:34I feel like the lack of seeing any other teams is always a bad sign.
51:39Yeah, that they're already here.
51:41We're starting to get butterflies, always do it before the checkpoint.
51:44I have a good feeling, but I have a bad feeling when we see the butterflies.
51:54Once a remote outpost on Panama's Caribbean coast, Bocas del Toro grew from a modest banana port into a vibrant island community.
52:06Tucked amongst it, the fourth checkpoint.
52:13Let's go, let's go, let's go.
52:15Make your way to Aqua Lounge.
52:17Find the rear exit and follow the pathway to the Escuela del Mar Surf School.
52:22Where are we headed?
52:23Aqua Lounge.
52:24Hola, senor.

52:38Si, si.
52:40Get ready to run.
52:42Where do you think the other teams are?
52:43I'm hoping they're behind us.
52:44Yeah.
52:45I don't know.
52:46What do you reckon, Dad?
52:47I've got a sneaky feeling we may even be numero uno.

52:55Go this way, follow the trail.

53:01Shoe check.
53:02This says dive school, though.
53:04Oh, it could be a long heck, isn't it?
53:06Escuela del Mar Surf School.
53:08Muchas gracias.
53:10All right, come on.
53:12Escuela del Mar Surf School.
53:14Escuela.
53:15Okay.
53:16Come on, huh?
53:17Keep going.
53:18What?
53:20Do you guys know where the surf school is?
53:22It's more down that way.
53:24That way?
53:25We went the wrong way.
53:26That's embarrassing.
53:29Come on.
53:30Come on, mate.
53:31This looks like a lot of surfboards.
53:32Right, there's a jetty there.
53:33There it is.
53:35By water taxi, travel to the checkpoint Red Frog Hotel.
53:40Okay.
53:41Taxi!
53:42Si.
53:43Now what?
53:44Water taxi.
53:45No, no!
53:46Overboard!
53:48I'm getting nervous now, Dad.
53:50Look, look.
53:51Calm as anything.

53:53Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!
53:56Come on!

54:20I think we're here.
54:21We made it!

54:37I'm driving.

54:41Where are we headed?
54:42I don't know.
54:43Hang on, huh?
54:44Hang on.
54:45Stop, stop, stop.
54:46Take the first right, then bear right.
54:48Next right, then left right.
54:49Take the first right, so keep going.
54:52Left here.
54:53Go to our left here.
54:54We haven't taken a right yet.
54:55I'm so confused.
54:57This reminds me of you driving me to school.
55:01Excuse me!
55:02Watch out!
55:03Watch out!
55:04Useless drivers coming through!
55:06We're sorry!
55:07Where are we going, Dad?
55:08I don't know.
55:09Yeah.
55:10I think we've got to go back.
55:11This is not it.
55:12So right, and then what, left?
55:14Was that a right?
55:15Yeah.
55:16Yeah, and left.
55:17Up here, you think?
55:18Yeah.
55:19Oh, my gosh.
55:20Are we lost?
55:21He's getting it wrong.
55:23Oh, dear.
55:25I hope we don't bump into a team.
55:28Right, well, now I have no idea where we are.
55:31You drive, and I'll get...
55:33I'll do the...
55:34Let's go back to the beginning and start again.
55:35Come on.
55:38So we go over the crossroads, and follow this steep hill down to the viewing point.
55:43I think this could be it.
55:44That's a hill going down.
55:46Come on, girl!
55:47Come on, Vera!
55:49Yeah, this is it.
55:50This is it.
55:51Are we meant to stop there?
55:52Is that the view?
55:53That's it, yeah.
55:54Well, let's go down, let's go down, let's go down, let's go down.
55:56Let's pull over.
55:57No, let's reverse into it and start.
56:01One minute.
56:03We're shambles.
56:08Hola.
56:09Hello.
56:10Hi.
56:11Welcome to this island resort.
56:14Can you sign your book, please?
56:15OK.
56:16Congratulations.
56:17You have successfully reached your fourth checkpoint.
56:19Please sign in, overly.
56:20What's your thoughts?
56:21Last?
56:22Third?
56:23Last or third?
56:24Yeah.
56:26Oh!
56:27What?
56:28That's mad!
56:29What?
56:30Oh, no way!
56:32Oh, no way!
56:33Oh, my God!
56:34Oh, what?
56:37Oh, thank you so much.
56:41I can't believe it.
56:42Can you do it?
56:43I can't.
56:44I still can't believe it.
56:45Still not sunk in.
56:46In my head, to get first in the race,
56:48you'd have to just focus, travel, travel, travel.
56:50But we've actually enjoyed it.
56:52So it just shows you can enjoy and race at the same time?
56:56Yeah.
56:57Maybe save a little bit more money.
56:58You always say do.
57:02What?
57:09Considering we were seven hours behind,
57:12we're now only half an hour behind first place.
57:15That feels good.
57:16Back in the game!
57:18Well done, Dylan and Jackie.
57:20Saving that money for those cabs on this leg has really helped.
57:24We're happy just playing that little second car
57:26and then waiting for one slip-up, and we'll be in.
57:29Oh, my God!
57:34Hello, hola!
57:37Third!
57:39All right.
57:40Our biggest obstacle was we were in the sticks.
57:42Transport was a huge challenge for us
57:44because there were no buses where we were going.
57:47But we're in the race, look, 45 minutes.
57:49What's 45 minutes?
57:50All right?
57:51Nada.
57:52Nothing.
57:53Tudors!
57:54To the island!
57:55That is a picture-perfect postcard.
57:56It's paradise.
57:57Wow!
57:58To the island!
58:00That is a picture-perfect.
58:02Postcard.
58:03It's paradise.
58:04Wow.
58:05I caught a fish!
58:07Panama is mega bucks.
58:09$310.
58:10Absolutely spend on.
58:12Oh, my gosh, it's coming towards us.
58:14There's been moments in my life where I didn't even want to be here anymore.
58:17Things like this shows that there's stuff worth living for.
58:19Oh, my days!
58:21We're in the final country. That's nuts.
58:24We're not in Colombia.
58:25Not at all. Panama.
58:26I guess we're stranded.
58:27ILO-esque.
58:28Oh, piss off.
58:57ILO-esque.
58:58ILO-esque.
58:59ILO-esque.
