00:00Hiya Frank, this is Jimmy Hoffa.
00:03Glad to meet you.
00:04Glad to meet you too, even if it's over the phone.
00:06After Netflix and theater owners have been unable to reach a compromise,
00:10the streaming giant has decided to forgo the wide release of Martin Scorsese's star-studded drama,
00:15The Irishman.
00:16The release would have allowed the movie to play on thousands of screens across the country,
00:20but now Netflix will forgo it.
00:22In order to make the film starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel
00:27available to its subscribers as quickly as possible,
00:30a long-standing policy that doesn't fly with cinema chains.
00:33I heard you paint houses.
00:40Now, there had been speculation that Oscar-hungry Netflix might further soften its stance
00:44in regard to honoring theatrical windows, but in the end,
00:47it couldn't reach a compromise with chains including AMC and Cineplex.
00:51The Irishman will open November 1st and select indie cinemas willing to carry the drama.
00:55More than three weeks later, or 26 days to be exact, it will debut November 27th on Netflix.
01:00This rules out the sort of big screen blitz Scorsese and other season directors are used to,
01:05unless something changes at the 11th hour.
01:08Big business and the government, they're trying to pull us down.
01:11You might be demonstrating a failure to show appreciation.
01:15Last year, Netflix acknowledged the value of the theatrical experience when announcing that Roma
01:20and other Oscar hopefuls would play exclusively in cinemas for two to three weeks
01:25before being made available to its subscribers.
01:27But that wasn't enough to appease all Oscar voters or theater chains,
01:31which insist on a 90-day window between the time a title opens and is released on home entertainment.
