Theater owners say they are not rankled by the decision to take the filmed chronicle of the Broadway musical off the theatrical calendar.

00:00It was recently announced that the Hamilton film will debut on Disney Plus on July 3rd,
00:04just in time for Independence Day and more than a year before its previously planned theatrical
00:08release. But why was it moved to streaming so quickly? According to experts, Disney Plus needs
00:13product right now. Though the decision to move up the release of the filmed version of the
00:17Hamilton Broadway stage show comes as movie theaters reel from the current global shutdown,
00:22observers say the move signals less about Disney's theatrical strategy than it does about its focus
00:26on Disney Plus, which had few big titles planned for summer release even before the coronavirus
00:31hit and caused production shutdowns. LightShed Media analyst Rich Greenfield says,
00:35This is a commercial film, but not a blockbuster film, something they had hoped for a theatrical
00:40slot and are pulling back simply because they need to put something into that Disney Plus pipeline.
00:45Disney Plus launched like a rocket ship on November 12th with a deep library of beloved films and
00:49high-profile original series The Mandalorian from director Jon Favreau. But now, Greenfield notes,
00:54the Disney Plus content engine is running very dry. Theater owners tell The Hollywood Reporter they
00:58are not rattled by Disney's decision to take Hamilton off the theatrical calendar. According to one
01:03exhibition executive, the movie is done and Disney Plus needs product. Disney has maintained that high
01:08profile upcoming titles, including the live-action remake of Mulan and Black Widow starring Scarlett
01:13Johansson, will be shown in theaters. For much more on this story, head to THR.com. For The Hollywood
