Paul Rudd crashed 'Conan' on Monday night, reviving a long-running gag and revealing the story behind SNL's "worst-received sketch of all time" alongside Bill Hader.
Transcript
00:00The reason this sketch didn't work is that it was terrible.
00:05Bill Hader and Paul Rudd opened up about Saturday Night Live's worst-received sketch of all time on Monday's Conan with Conan O'Brien on TBS.
00:13Plus, Rudd revived his favorite long-running gag between himself and the late-night host in honor of Conan's final week of episodes.
00:19When O'Brien asked guest Hader if he'd ever had a sketch go terribly wrong during his time on SNL,
00:25the Barry actor revealed the backstory behind the Ed Burns Grill Boys sketch.
00:29Inspired by Hader's time working with Burns on the 2007 rom-com Purple Violets,
00:33the sketch featured both Hader and Rudd, who was hosting, mimicking Burns' voice while playing Brothers and grilling meat.
00:39But the sketch never made it out of dress rehearsal.
00:42We went out there doing a dress and I did the voice, but Paul, for some reason, would not do the voice.
00:47And I don't understand why Paul decided not to do it.
00:52Yes, Rudd himself then appeared on stage and crashed the interview.
00:57How dare you.
00:59Oh, dare you.
01:02See, why didn't you do that?
01:03I could do the voice.
01:06I did the voice.
01:07Rudd went on to share how he remembered the sketch going down, claiming that Hader's memory was very hazy.
01:12Now, I might not be a trained monkey boy like your man over here with the voices.
01:18According to Rudd, he did do the voice, but the sketch was just terrible, and SNL boss Lorne Michaels agreed.
01:25Lorne said in his history with the show, it was the worst received sketch.
01:36To help prove his point, Rudd prompted a clip of the sketch, but it ultimately just served as yet another opportunity to carry out a long-running gag between him and O'Brien.
01:45Play the sketch.
01:46The prank clip featured a scene from the film Mac and Me, which was initially shown by Rudd during a 2004 episode of Late Night with Conan O'Brien to promote his appearance on Friends.
02:00Since then, Rudd has pulled the prank countless times over the years.
02:03Here was O'Brien's reaction.
02:10The final episode of Conan will air on Thursday, June 24th on TVS.
