00:00Hey, check it out.
00:01We're here.
00:03Welcome to Key House.
00:05I could never get your father to talk about his life here.
00:11This show is full of mystery and suspense,
00:14but it's also a very emotional show
00:15because this family is dealing with this traumatic event
00:18they just experienced.
00:19How did you try and balance the surreal and magical world
00:22of the show with the very real emotions
00:24these characters are feeling?
00:25It was a good foundation that we got with these scripts.
00:27I think Meredith, Avril, and Carlton Cuse, they knew
00:30that it was a show about an ordinary family with big heart
00:33that happens to be in a world of magic.
00:35We always intended for the show at its heart
00:37to be this family drama.
00:39The keys allow them to learn more about their father,
00:43opening up this mystery as to what happened 25 years ago.
00:47Whenever you think you understand about those keys,
00:50you don't.
00:53There are definitely some creepy moments in this show,
00:55and I will say that last night after I finished watching
00:58the series, there was an earthquake.
00:59Did you guys feel that?
01:00Yes, we did.
01:01I thought it was a home invasion.
01:02See, I thought the shadow people were coming for me.
01:04I was like, Dodge just found me.
01:05It's all happening.
01:06And I was like, oh my gosh, there was an earthquake.
01:08The earthquake key.
01:09Amazing.
01:09Since it was such a creepy show to watch at some points,
01:12were there any moments on set that felt kind of creepy to film?
01:14When we were filming the mirror sequence,
01:16it wasn't so much creepy scary as it was psychologically challenging.
01:20Disconcerting.
01:21We were in an octagon-shaped room of mirrors,
01:24and so you only saw an infinite reflection of yourself.
01:27It's incredibly uneasy feeling.
01:28Normally, there's a release valve when you're shooting,
01:32because you can see the camera.
01:33It's clear it's artificial, but in the mirror box, it was not fun.
01:36I don't recommend it.
01:37There is a crazy evil thing who wants these keys.
01:42Now, this is a very complex show with so many sets and special effects.
01:47What was the most challenging part of bringing this series to life?
01:50There are visuals in Joe and Gabe's comic that are really spectacular,
01:56but really hard to translate to the screen, like the head key.
02:00In the comic, you literally split a person's head open.
02:02You can look inside and see this sort of like clockworks of what's going on.
02:07Meredith and I had to come up with sort of a metaphorical way, for instance, to do that.
02:10For each of the characters, we had to invent a magical world in their head
02:14that would sort of personify who they were.
02:16How is any of this possible?
02:19So if you could use the head key on yourself,
02:21what do you think the inside of your head would look like?
02:24Have you ever seen the painting, The Scream?
02:27I think mine would be full of shiny things.
02:30It would be colorful.
02:31There would be a lot of sequins.
02:32Shiny things.
02:34It sounds like a fun place to be.
02:35I like it.
02:39Bodhi?
02:42Holy crap.
02:44If you like fantasy, if you like murder mystery or a family show,
02:48it's a little bit of like a Stranger Things, Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia,
02:52Lost in Space sort of thing all mushed together,
02:54but it's very original in that way,
02:56and that you can't say it's just like one of those shows.
02:58There's really something for everyone, for the horror fan, fantasy fan,
03:01for the young adult coming of age story fan, family dramas.
03:05It just has all of those elements working for it.
03:07This is a show where you can sit down kind of across generations
03:10and with all sorts of different family members,
03:12and you'll all find something to like in it.
