00:00Welcome to the Townsend Agency.
00:02We exist because traditional law enforcement can't keep up.
00:05Charlie's Angels punches into theaters this Friday, November 15th,
00:08and the reviews have officially started rolling in.
00:10So, should you see it? Here's what the critics are saying.
00:13The reboot of the iconic TV and film franchise centers on three female spies,
00:17this time played by Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska.
00:20The Hollywood Reporter's Biandria July writes that director Elizabeth Banks' movie
00:24offers a fresh feminist spin on a cherished story. The critic writes,
00:28The result is a grand remodel that honors its precursors while elevating itself beyond them.
00:33Banks brings Charlie's Angels into the modern age with flair,
00:36all while unapologetically raising a feminist flag, championing female friendships,
00:40and suddenly making a point about the urgency of the ongoing climate crisis.
00:44In Forbes, Scott Mendelson writes that Charlie's Angels doesn't try to reinvent the wheel,
00:48though it does use the core premise to craft a refreshingly grounded and unexpectedly cynical
00:53little actioner that happens to feature three colorful female protagonists.
00:57The critic also notes that the film relies less on the male gaze than past entries in the franchise.
01:02He further states that while the film takes a while to find itself and get past the setup and exposition,
01:08it turns into a pulpy action comedy that doesn't neglect either component.
01:12I compressed his carotid and deoxygenated his brain stem.
01:15Well, that sounds painful.
01:17Don't worry. He's gonna wake up.
01:18Unless he doesn't.
01:19However, for The Guardian, critic Benjamin Lee writes that while the film is a balancing act
01:23between comedy and action, it falls short on both.
01:26He describes the action as, quote,
01:28"...underwhelming," noting that some sequences are incoherently edited, whether they are fight scenes or car chases.
01:34Lee goes on to write that the script is clunky, with many one-liners that tank,
01:38and a dynamic between the three central characters that never truly sparks in the way that one would hope.
01:43And while Collider's Perry Nimiroff writes that the film is a major improvement on Banks' last directorial offering,
01:48Pitch Perfect 2, she says she has a way to go behind the lens.
01:52The critic also notes that the visuals are well-constructed,
01:55but says that the film lacks a cohesive style.
01:58But Nimiroff closes out her review by calling the movie a highly entertaining action comedy,
02:02with a winning Closest Sisters leading trio that also gives a big boost to the network of angels.
02:08Ah, we're still in the first closet.
02:10There's another closet.
02:12Oh my god.
