Peter Sarsgaard joins THR's Scott Feinberg in a new episode of The Hollywood Reporter's Awards Chatter podcast — which was recorded in front of an audience at the Newport Beach Film Festival, where Sarsgaard was honored with the Film Performance of the Year Award.

00:00Malkovich said to me, um, you know why they cast you didn't, don't you?

00:05And I was like, well, I mean, because Ben Brantley and other stuff like that, you know.

00:11Um, no, no.

00:13It's because you sound like me.

00:19I am so thrilled to be here today because we are going to have an opportunity to go

00:25in depth with this year's recipient of the festival's Film Performance of the Year Award.

00:31Would you please join me in welcoming to the Newport Beach Film Festival, Peter Sarsgaard.

00:36I mean, that movie was an experience that we never came out of.

00:41We shot most nights, we drank most mornings, we woke up from a hangover in the afternoon

00:45and we went back and made the movie.

00:47We had intense relationships going on all the time that were always changing.

00:52And it gave the movie like a real fuel.

00:56You know, this was like a time in my life where I could really like lose my mind.

01:01And, um, I'm glad it paid off.

01:04Yeah.

01:09You want to ask about the nudity, don't you?

01:11No, no, no, no, no.

01:12I can tell you.

01:12But if you want to talk about it, it's all your...

01:14It's fine.

01:14I actually will say that it was not scripted that I was naked with Liam.

01:18I said to Bill, I was like, what if I went and took a shower and came back out?

01:22I'm in the towel and I take off the towel and I'm putting on my clothes.

01:25There's a couple of guys hanging out in a hotel room.

01:27It's no big deal.

01:28I just happen to be naked.

01:29And then maybe I take a little while.

01:31He was like, great.

01:32Let's not tell Liam.

01:35And that wasn't a good idea.

01:37We should have told Liam.

01:39I'm an actor also who likes to act.

01:42So if somebody says 50 takes, I say 55.

01:46Let's do it.

01:47I'm there to act, not sit in my trailer.

01:50With that and everything you've talked about and much, much more, I would like to present

01:54you with the film performance of the year on behalf of the Newport Beach Film Festival.

02:00I think so much of what we're missing today in the world is about that, is about talking

02:12and listening and also about just feeling and you intuiting.

02:19That's another skill that every audience needs to learn is to use something more than this,

02:26their sort of logical mind, their heart mind.
