Maya Rudolph sat down with THR's Scott Feinberg for The Hollywood Reporter's 'Awards Chatter' podcast, which was recorded in front of a live audience at the San Vicente Bungalows in West Hollywood. Rudolph dishes on hosting the annual Mother's Day episode on 'Saturday Night Live' — which is now Emmy-nominated.
00:00I was very touched that Lauren wanted me to do the Mother's Day show because I've been there for a few of them and it's actually very moving that he asked me to do it and to celebrate the fact that I'm a mother and then that place is my home and it was just very touching. I'm going to cry again. It's exhausting.
00:19And I knew that I wanted it to be great and I got this idea in my head of you know I'm a mother now and I'm the mother. For the Mother's Day show I'm the mother and then I started to think about mother and the few times I've been back over the years I've noticed the shift in the cast being younger than me and asking me questions.
00:49Like I'm an elder, like a tribe elder and it's been very interesting and it feels kind of funny but I get it. You know for me those people were the real people and when you know when people came through the studio you know when Bill Murray came we were just gobsmacked.
01:14This felt like yeah I was on the show but I'm happy to tell you what I know kid but they were really asking questions in a way that made me realize there is a generational shift happening here and watching the show I've sensed the shift as well especially with social media and the show has changed in lots of ways in that way.
01:33So I knew I wanted to embrace that and be proud of it and I just thought of the song and I thought all I could think of was I wanted it to feel like I grew up loving Madonna and I loved Vogue and I just wanted to be Madonna when I was a kid and be in all of her videos.
01:53And so I wanted it to feel like that which was like greatness but also like an homage to like everyone that came before you like classic Hollywood but this is like classic comedy you know.
02:07So I just thought of who I am there and kind of mixing the two and how I was so proud of myself because I rarely have good ideas that are like you know what that would make a great sketch.
02:21And this one was mother and I just thought of oops I made you dance remember in that movie when I pooped my pants when you were a baby you pooped your pants and I changed your diaper because I'm your mother.
02:32And so I asked my kids like do you like this and they're like yeah it's good it's good it's like we got it.
