'The Hunger Games' star Sam Claflin reflected on his career success and regrets during an awards bash in London’s Raffles at the OWO. He was one of the recipients of this year’s Artist of Distinction Award at the Newport Beach Film Festival UK & IE Honours, and he took the opportunity to delve deeper into the films and TV shows he’s worked on.

Moving forwards, he also listed some of the director’s who he’d love to collaborate with next as he looks to challenge himself in his career.

Sam can next be seen in the Prime Video series ‘Vanished’ co-starring Kaley Cuoco, out on Friday 27th February. Report by Burtonj. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn

00:00Sometimes it's hard to remember junkets because, you know, we come in thick and fast, but I had a lovely
00:03conversation with you and Kayleigh the other day about Highland cows.
00:07Yes.
00:08You had the socks.
00:09Well done, yeah.
00:10Have you, I was wondering if you'd ruminate on it a bit more, and have you figured like, actually, yeah,
00:15every house I go into there are Highland cows, as in your parents' house too.
00:18Other than my own house, I don't think I've seen another house since I saw you, only what, a few
00:22days ago it feels like, a week ago.
00:25But no, I haven't noticed, I haven't noticed, but I will keep my eyes peeled.
00:30I'm actually going to my mum's tomorrow.
00:32Oh, there you go.
00:32So I will get back to you.
00:34Keep a tally.
00:35I'm pretty sure there's a huge, huge portrait of a Highland cow on the stairs.
00:40They famously bring the room together in any room you go in.
00:44Hey, congratulations on being an artist at Distinction this evening, which is a pretty lofty title.
00:48What does that title mean to you?
00:50I know I have to be humble, but what does it mean?
00:51Well, you know, I, firstly, I'd say I feel very honoured, and it feels surreal, honestly,
01:02like to be recognised for the work that I have done, and work that, you know, I personally
01:08have, for the past 15 years, looked back on, kind of wondering why I chose this, and why
01:14I did it like that, and why I did it like this.
01:16I'm always very self-critical, so knowing that there is someone, at least one person, or maybe
01:21two people out there that, you know, believe in me, and believe that I'm worthy of this
01:26honour, it feels, yeah, it feels surreal.
01:29I feel very lucky.
01:30I think you seem like a very thoughtful man, and when you, you know, you're looking back
01:34at these roles, and you question yourself, but ultimately, are you a person who, like,
01:39surely you don't live with regrets of roles and stuff?
01:41You don't regret any projects?
01:42Like, they all did something for yourself, and let us do where we are today, and all that.
01:46Well, I think that's exactly the point.
01:48I think I look back at my work, and I see the growth.
01:51Like, each job, I feel like I get a bit better.
01:53I learn a bit more.
01:54I educate myself more.
01:56I grow not only as an actor, but as a person in life, and I feel like each job, I
02:00try to
02:00look for something that challenges me in some way, be it emotionally, mentally, physically.
02:07You know, and long may those challenges come.
02:09I don't, I like to feel like I'm earning my keep, you know, and I feel like sometimes
02:14this job doesn't feel like work, because I love what I do, and, you know, I love telling
02:20stories, I love observing people, I love having the opportunity to sort of tell these stories,
02:26and I feel, yeah, I feel very fortunate that I get to do what I love, so I try, by
02:33any means
02:34possible, to sort of push myself into an uncomfortable place, because I want to grow.
02:38I want to learn, and I want to be better, and, you know, I'm personally okay with the
02:46fact that I'm not overly proud of myself sometimes.
02:50I feel like it pushes me to, you know, to strive for perfection, which is unattainable,
02:54but, like, I think, I think sometimes it's a good thing as an actor to kind of stay modest,
02:58stay humble.
02:59Yeah, I was just going to say, it keeps you humble.
03:01Yeah.
03:01I have options then.
03:02Are there challenges untouched in your career at this point?
03:06Are you looking for a certain type of challenge, like, to achieve, like, you know, some kind
03:10of career goal at this point, do you think?
03:12Yeah, I think, I think there are a lot, actually.
03:16Like, I, you know, there are some filmmakers out there that I would be so lucky to work
03:22with, and would dream of working with.
03:24Manifest it for us, let's name some.
03:26Oh, well, I mean, you know, speaking of one battle after another, I feel like I was just
03:30speaking about it quite a lot recently, only because people have asked, like, what was
03:34the most, sort of, impactful film that you've seen recently?
03:37And that, that film, to me, is almost a flawless piece of cinema.
03:42So, like, Paul Thomas Anderson.
03:43I mean, the, the obvious, Paul Thomas Anderson's The Martin Scorsese, just to say he worked
03:48at Scorsese.
03:49Um, Quentin Tarantino, I know, I know, I feel like he may have retired now, I'm not
03:55sure.
03:56Almost.
03:56Yeah.
03:57Uh, Fincher, I love David Fincher.
04:01Like, and I, I know that his style of working is very, very specific and, uh, and taxing,
04:07you know, but he gets the results.
04:09And I feel like having an experience of being put through something of that ilk would be,
04:14uh, interesting, very new.
04:19Congratulations again.
04:20Enjoy tonight as well.
04:21And so, yeah, honestly, thrill for you.
04:22See you this time next year.
04:23We'll talk about cows again.
04:24Yes.
04:24Yeah, please.
04:25A bit of it.
04:26Thanks, guys.
