00:00:00Who types of love stories, too?
00:00:04Mmm, money!
00:00:06Okay, okay.
00:00:07Act like you know.
00:00:11Some duos might look like the perfect pairing outwardly.
00:00:17When in fact,
00:00:20they're headed for a split.
00:00:24Often the most satisfying stories are the ones that subvert your expectations.
00:00:30Because the truth is, the most romantic stories
00:00:40are often the least typical.
00:00:45You see, researchers studying online dating discovered
00:00:48if a person's too focused on checking off a list of rigid criteria in a partner,
00:00:52if they're too fixated on finding a quote-unquote soulmate,
00:00:56they're likely to miss out on their true compliment.
00:00:58A partner whose differences fit their own like interwoven fingers creating a firm lock.
00:01:04Hey, watch where you're going.
00:01:05Sorry! The sidewalk is for sharing.
00:01:08A romantic character shouldn't be flawless.
00:01:10They need complexities, depth.
00:01:13It's their growth along the way that makes them truly worth an epic love story.
00:01:17Uh, excuse me.
00:01:19Hey.
00:01:20Hi!
00:01:21You took my coffee.
00:01:23Thanks.
00:01:24Well, that's my philosophy anyway.
00:01:26And it served me well.
00:01:28Can't argue with the New York Times bestseller list.
00:01:31Ma'am, sorry to interrupt, but we've arrived.
00:01:34If you change your mind, I can take you back to the airport.
00:01:36No, no, no.
00:01:37It's really now or never.
00:01:38There's Amelia Bloom.
00:01:39You know, I've been trying to keep a bit of a lower profile these days.
00:01:55We are honored to have Penfield's bestselling author staying here with us this week.
00:02:00I hope this means you'll be doing a reading from your latest book.
00:02:02The romance fans of Penfield finally convinced my publisher to send me home.
00:02:07I believe we reserve the penthouse?
00:02:09Yes, Ms. Bloom.
00:02:11And of course you have access to all of our amenities.
00:02:14That includes our top-of-the-line gym.
00:02:16Won't be needing that.
00:02:17As well as our martini bar?
00:02:19Mmm.
00:02:20Much more recipe.
00:02:25Could I have my key then?
00:02:28I'm so sorry.
00:02:33You wouldn't mind signing this for me, would you?
00:02:37Who should I make it out to?
00:02:40The Bloomeria.
00:02:41I sent an email last week, but I'm still waiting on a shipment of 12 artisanal planters,
00:02:48two cases of assorted crystals, and, uh, let me think, um...
00:02:53Terrariums?
00:02:54Yes, 12 glass terrariums.
00:02:56Uh, if I could speak to a real human being instead of an inbox, maybe we could sort this out.
00:03:03Hannah, how is it that you can follow my conversation, update your socials, and watch front of store all at the same time?
00:03:12Gen Z, digital native at your service.
00:03:14Did you clean the potting area?
00:03:16Yup.
00:03:17Switch out front window displays?
00:03:18Obviously.
00:03:19What are the succulents?
00:03:20Trick question.
00:03:21They're on a bi-weekly schedule.
00:03:22Listen, I can't help it if the rapid development of new tech has shaped me into a flawless multitasker.
00:03:27It's a blessing and a curse.
00:03:29Well, what are you posting anyway?
00:03:30Most recently?
00:03:31Our sticky-fingered friend.
00:03:36What am I looking at?
00:03:38The Classify app?
00:03:40There's like a million apps.
00:03:41How am I supposed to keep track?
00:03:42That's exactly why you'd love this one.
00:03:44Sort of an all-in-one.
00:03:45Local events and dating stuff rolled into one.
00:03:49And, uh, shaming local shoplifters?
00:03:51Exactly.
00:03:52Like a bulletin board for the neighborhood.
00:03:54Digital classifieds.
00:03:58Okay, this guy's looking for pictures of feet.
00:04:00No thank you.
00:04:01Come on, Taylor.
00:04:02Every neighborhood has its endearing weirdos.
00:04:05Not all the posts are like that.
00:04:07You should seriously consider advertising the Blue Myria on here.
00:04:10A bunch of local shops do it.
00:04:12Between Two Covers post for all their in-store events.
00:04:15Really?
00:04:16Check it out.
00:04:17Calling all book lovers.
00:04:19Flash your Classify app at checkout for a free gift with purchase.
00:04:23What are they giving away?
00:04:24I don't know.
00:04:25Naughty bookmarks maybe?
00:04:26That's not the point.
00:04:27The point is, it draws in new customers.
00:04:30I will think about it.
00:04:31You know you will.
00:04:32You know you will.
00:04:33Just say you will.
00:04:34I will think about it.
00:04:39Okay, so I know that we've gone back and forth on this a few times, but, uh, I really think this design is going to do the trick.
00:04:45Uh, I think it captures the spirit and the, the energy that, uh, Between Two Covers has, um, um, brought back to the Penfield Business District, you know?
00:04:55It's bold.
00:04:56It's graphic.
00:04:57And it, it announces, we sell books here.
00:05:02So, you know, that's, um, I'd be ready to start priming the wall just as soon as, you know, we can either go ahead on the design.
00:05:10And I want to sign off.
00:05:11I told you the owner is very particular, I have to clear everything past them.
00:05:15Right, yeah, this mysterious owner that I've never met.
00:05:17What can I say?
00:05:18They're a private person.
00:05:19Yeah.
00:05:20So we're 100% sure that they exist, right?
00:05:22Heh.
00:05:23This isn't some ploy I've made up to frustrate you, Zach.
00:05:26Trust me, I have better ways to spend my time, too.
00:05:32Something okay?
00:05:33Bowling league drama.
00:05:34You know, they lured me in with their clever, classified post, but it's only been a month and there's already infighting over the lane assignments in Langford Lanes.
00:05:41Langford Lanes.
00:05:43Wow.
00:05:44I still love that place.
00:05:46Um, so when do you think I can get an answer on these?
00:05:50Uh, soon.
00:05:51Hopefully, definitely soon.
00:05:54So, is it like a singles thing, or...?
00:05:57No, it's not a singles thing.
00:05:59Why is it that everyone assumes a single woman with a fulfilling career and an active social life is still on the hunt for a man?
00:06:06No, I didn't really need...
00:06:07That I'm stuck at home with my long five-haired cats, watching bridal shows, and dreaming of the day some man will save me from my lonely spinster life.
00:06:14I love those shows.
00:06:15I only have one cat, and she requires a lot less feeding than a boyfriend.
00:06:18I like my life.
00:06:20Yeah.
00:06:21Got it.
00:06:22Sure.
00:06:23Um, it's just bullying.
00:06:24Yeah.
00:06:25That's all I'm saying.
00:06:26Yeah.
00:06:27I guess I just thought that Classify was like a dating app, so...
00:06:29Some people use it that way.
00:06:31I don't.
00:06:32Well, who knows that headache, right?
00:06:36Sorry I went a bit off there.
00:06:38No, no.
00:06:39I'd say it was very, uh...
00:06:41Hostile.
00:06:42No, no.
00:06:43I was gonna say righteous.
00:06:45Uh, we'll get back to you on these.
00:06:49Yes.
00:06:50Uh, free bookmark.
00:06:51Great.
00:06:52For your troubles.
00:06:53Alright.
00:06:57Ugh.
00:06:58You ever read through two of these and realize the posters are actually perfect for each
00:07:02other, if only they'd connect and figure it out?
00:07:04Yeah, I think you overestimate the amount of time I spend thinking about the love lives
00:07:07of strangers on an app.
00:07:08Like, like this one.
00:07:10They're asking for advice on starting an urban vegetable garden.
00:07:13This one wants to meet up with local vegans.
00:07:15How perfect is that?
00:07:16Let me see that, okay?
00:07:18Neither of these people is looking for a romantic connection.
00:07:22Frank, everybody's looking for a romantic connection.
00:07:25Even the vegans.
00:07:26Ugh.
00:07:27Please tell me you don't message these people.
00:07:29Um...
00:07:30Yeah, very selectively.
00:07:32Yeah.
00:07:33You are like a nosy grandmother.
00:07:35My online persona is more, like, hard to nail down man of mystery.
00:07:40Maybe I'm available, maybe I'm not.
00:07:43Maybe you're delusional, yeah?
00:07:45Uh...
00:07:46If this person, for example, needs me, they're never gonna find their soulmate with a post
00:07:54like this.
00:07:55Ready to bloom where I'm planted.
00:07:58Creative soul seeks deeper connections.
00:08:00Translation?
00:08:01I'm a friendless loner whose therapist says I need to put myself out there more.
00:08:05They need me.
00:08:06You were reading way too much into that.
00:08:09Oh, really?
00:08:10No, it continues.
00:08:11Let's share all Penfield has to offer.
00:08:14That's...
00:08:15That's...
00:08:16What is wrong with that?
00:08:17What?
00:08:18What is wrong with that?
00:08:19That's too transactional.
00:08:20Translation?
00:08:21I don't care how cheap this date is, we're still splitting the bill.
00:08:24Okay, now you're just twisting their words.
00:08:27No, these people aren't desperate.
00:08:30Maybe just cliché.
00:08:31This is why you're still single.
00:08:33No, that is not why I'm single.
00:08:36God, just promise me you won't message that guy.
00:08:39Excuse me?
00:08:40Francesca.
00:08:41This sad, ineffective post was clearly written by a woman.
00:08:45I'm ready to blossom where I'm planted?
00:08:48That screams Georgia O'Keeffe.
00:08:50Well, man, woman, whoever, they're just looking for some company.
00:08:55Okay?
00:08:56Nothing wrong with that.
00:08:57Okay.
00:08:58If that's how you feel, she's within a five-mile radius.
00:09:03Go get her, Frankie.
00:09:05No.
00:09:06You know what?
00:09:07I don't have the time.
00:09:08Between work and my extremely high-maintenance friendships, my plate is full.
00:09:14Besides, there's no algorithm on earth that can accurately predict romantic compatibility.
00:09:20You're right.
00:09:21It's all chemistry.
00:09:24It's like taking a seat at the local bar, striking up a conversation with a handsome stranger.
00:09:29What can I get you?
00:09:31Mmm.
00:09:32Let's talk gin.
00:09:34Now, my know-it-all editor says I need to incorporate more social media into my books.
00:09:40He says it's so ubiquitous these days that a world without it is entirely too fictional.
00:09:44So you're catfishing locals as you travel from town to town?
00:09:48Excuse me.
00:09:49I am doing research while I'm on my book tour.
00:09:51Ah.
00:09:52Professional catfishing, then.
00:09:53I am not trying to fool anybody or pretending to be somebody else.
00:09:58The last thing I'm looking for is love.
00:10:00I want access.
00:10:01Yeah.
00:10:02Access to what?
00:10:03Banking information?
00:10:04No, I'm good there.
00:10:05I'm glad you are.
00:10:07People's hopes and dreams and hang-ups.
00:10:12You know?
00:10:13To my editor's point, we all live online these days.
00:10:16You know?
00:10:17We're not individuals so much as usernames that are connected to a catalog of things that
00:10:22we consume.
00:10:23Like TV, movies, and organic dishwashing detergent.
00:10:27There's no accidental discovery.
00:10:30You know?
00:10:31And it's life through a filter, and it's just...
00:10:33It's kind of superficial.
00:10:34Exactly.
00:10:35Given the opportunity for some good old-fashioned analog exchange, you can get somebody to confess
00:10:41their deepest longings and fears in no time.
00:10:45Oh, yeah.
00:10:46I'm sure you run across that in your line of work.
00:10:49A stranger comes in, bellies up to the bar, and starts...
00:10:52Oversharing?
00:10:53It happens all the time.
00:10:55Mm-hmm.
00:10:56See?
00:10:57We are all starving for real, tangible connection.
00:11:01Like this poster.
00:11:03Ready to bloom.
00:11:04Sounds dreamy.
00:11:05Next!
00:11:06Uh, no.
00:11:08Lonely is great.
00:11:10There is always a story there.
00:11:12So, gear ready to bloom.
00:11:16Oh, that's a good start.
00:11:17I have just landed in town, and I need a tour guide.
00:11:22Oh.
00:11:23Is that good?
00:11:24A little on the nose, but sure.
00:11:25Okay.
00:11:26Would you like to see your city through a stranger's eyes?
00:11:30Great.
00:11:31I thought you used to live here.
00:11:32Uh, yeah.
00:11:33That was a long time ago.
00:11:35Anyway, I'm just casting a line and seeing if anything catches.
00:11:39Cheers.
00:11:41Well, looks like Mr. Lonely was waiting by his phone.
00:11:46Wow.
00:11:47That was fast.
00:11:48You can never know where the first moment of connection could lead.
00:11:51Maybe he's married, or...
00:11:53Or a serial killer.
00:11:54Or straight.
00:11:55Or straight.
00:11:56Or straight.
00:11:57Or straight.
00:11:58You just never know until you put yourself out there.
00:12:04Is that an exciting new prospect?
00:12:06It's hard to say.
00:12:07We'll see.
00:12:08It's hard to say.
00:12:09So, sometimes you gotta, you know, take it offline.
00:12:13Is that all you're gonna give me?
00:12:14No more juicy details for you, Frankie.
00:12:16You need to stop living vicariously and go have an adventure of your own.
00:12:19But I love juicy details.
00:12:21You know this about me.
00:12:23I gotta take off.
00:12:24Okay.
00:12:25Alright.
00:12:26I'll see you.
00:12:27Go on.
00:12:28Bye.
00:12:49Hey, go ahead and clock out.
00:12:50I'll lock up.
00:12:51A whole ten minutes early?
00:12:53What are you even, body swapped by aliens?
00:12:54No, it's slow for customers and my brother just punked on family dinner.
00:13:06So, I'm just gonna order takeout and make sure that I've watched everything made for TV.
00:13:12Alternatively, you could, I don't know, maybe try to have fun?
00:13:16No, fun is for your twenties.
00:13:19Go.
00:13:20Make some questionable decisions for the both of us.
00:13:23I will.
00:13:24Try my best.
00:13:25See you tomorrow, boss.
00:13:26Goodnight, honey.
00:13:28You're hitting it off.
00:13:42Lonely local, aren't you?
00:13:44No, he's funny.
00:13:45I mean, a little awkward, but funny.
00:13:46It's strange because he kind of reminds me of my husband.
00:13:47You're married?
00:13:48I was.
00:13:49Oh, don't worry.
00:13:50He's dead now.
00:13:51I invited Ready to Bloom to come and join us.
00:13:52What, you invited him here?
00:13:53Yeah, well, you have to meet a stranger in a public place.
00:13:54That's just common sense.
00:13:55Now, we just wait and see who walks through that door.
00:13:56Hi.
00:13:57Hi.
00:14:25Hi.
00:14:26Hi.
00:14:27Hi.
00:14:28Hi.
00:14:29Hi.
00:14:30Hi.
00:14:31Hi.
00:14:32Hi.
00:14:33Hi.
00:14:34Hi.
00:14:35Hi.
00:14:36Hi.
00:14:37Hi.
00:14:38Hi.
00:14:39Hi.
00:14:40Hi.
00:14:41Hi.
00:14:42Hi.
00:14:43Hi.
00:14:44Hi.
00:14:45Hi.
00:14:46Hi.
00:14:47Hi.
00:14:48Hi.
00:14:49Hi.
00:14:50Hi.
00:14:51Hi.
00:14:52Hi.
00:14:53Hi.
00:14:54Hi.
00:14:55I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.
00:15:24I'm so gonna regret this.
00:15:28Well, any updates?
00:15:31Radio silence.
00:15:32Boo.
00:15:32Yeah, I'm calling it a night.
00:15:34It seems that my lonely local has not been enticed.
00:15:38Or maybe he slipped in just under the wire.
00:15:47Mom?
00:15:49What are you doing here?
00:15:51When did you get here?
00:15:55Are you visiting or staying?
00:15:57Why didn't you text or...
00:15:58It was a last-minute addition to my book tour.
00:16:01I was gonna reach out first thing tomorrow.
00:16:04Hello, hello.
00:16:06Wow, so your publisher finally sent you to Penfield.
00:16:08Yeah, well, you know, it's not always about the total reach, but the level of enthusiasm.
00:16:13They thought that a passionate hometown crowd would generate excellent press for my latest release.
00:16:17Well, uh, welcome home.
00:16:22Are you staying here?
00:16:24The penthouse suite.
00:16:26Well, why don't you just stay at the house?
00:16:27I mean, there's plenty of space.
00:16:29I left your room the same.
00:16:30Your shoes, dad's ties.
00:16:31Oh, I, you know, I wouldn't want to impose or...
00:16:34But look at you, you look so handsome.
00:16:37I mean, what are you doing here?
00:16:38Are you meeting someone?
00:16:39A date?
00:16:40Um, I, I was, yeah.
00:16:43I kind of...
00:16:44Oh, look at me.
00:16:45Wrecking your plans already.
00:16:46Well, where is she then?
00:16:48I don't know.
00:16:49Um, it's kind of an unconventional setup.
00:16:52Oh, a blind date?
00:16:54On Classified, actually.
00:16:57Oh.
00:16:58Yeah, I don't know what she looks like.
00:17:00I don't even know her name.
00:17:01She just told me to meet her at the bar, and she likes gin martinis, so...
00:17:06She's not coming.
00:17:15You're ready to bloom, aren't you?
00:17:18Oh, no.
00:17:19No, no, no, no.
00:17:20Don't be embarrassed.
00:17:21No, I think that these things probably happen all the time.
00:17:23What?
00:17:23To who?
00:17:24God, I finally post that app, and I pick up my mom who doesn't even live here anymore.
00:17:28You know what?
00:17:29I think that it proves that you and I, we're compatible.
00:17:32Mom.
00:17:32What?
00:17:33Wait, why are you even on the Classify app?
00:17:36I mean, are you dating again?
00:17:39First of all, don't look so horrified.
00:17:41No, I'm not.
00:17:42I am just doing research for my, my, my book.
00:17:45That's all.
00:17:45You're catfishing strangers for research?
00:17:47That's what I'm saying.
00:17:50Wait.
00:17:52Does Taylor even know that you're here?
00:17:54Well.
00:18:16Just had to begin again
00:18:19Had to get through the maze
00:18:24Pulled back from destruction
00:18:29You're not hard as a muscle, are you?
00:18:34It's me.
00:18:34I'm rooting for you.
00:18:37Thanks?
00:18:37No, not, not actually rooting.
00:18:40It's my screen name.
00:18:42From Classify?
00:18:44Wrong guy.
00:18:46Right.
00:18:46Clearly.
00:18:47Um, sorry.
00:18:48Enjoy that coffee.
00:18:52You know, I was worried that you might be too cool for me.
00:18:56But, uh, thanks for putting my mind at ease.
00:19:02I'm Frankie.
00:19:04Friend Jessica.
00:19:05Nice to meet you.
00:19:12It's just the third shelf to your left.
00:19:14Hello.
00:19:20Hello.
00:19:22Amelia Bloom.
00:19:24Yes.
00:19:25Uh, welcome to Between Two Covers.
00:19:28We weren't expecting you yet, but I confirmed the dates with your publisher.
00:19:34And, um, Amelia Bloom.
00:19:37And do you have a name?
00:19:38Yes.
00:19:39And it is?
00:19:41Uh, Margot.
00:19:42The manager.
00:19:43Ah.
00:19:44Well, Margot the manager.
00:19:46I came in a few days early to make the most of this last stop on my tour.
00:19:49You may know that I lived in Penfield for many years.
00:19:51I know everything about you.
00:19:52I mean, I know everything that is normal to know.
00:19:56Okay.
00:19:56Well, I am looking for a little hole-in-the-wall jewelry shop where my husband used to buy me things.
00:20:01And I feel certain that it is just right around here somewhere.
00:20:04It was just right around the corner.
00:20:06Oh.
00:20:06But they went out of business.
00:20:08It was about three-ish years ago.
00:20:11Three years?
00:20:12Really?
00:20:13Yeah.
00:20:14Uh, it's a coffee shop now.
00:20:15Super cute.
00:20:17I can, uh, take you there if you want.
00:20:21Um, aren't you supposed to be working?
00:20:23Oh.
00:20:24Yeah.
00:20:25I think you should stay working.
00:20:26And you should get everybody very excited about my book reading.
00:20:29Okay?
00:20:29Okay, yeah, yeah.
00:20:30Okay.
00:20:30I mean, we are.
00:20:31All of us.
00:20:32Okay.
00:20:34Oh, actually, Margot.
00:20:35Yes, Miss Bloom.
00:20:36Um, do you happen to have some water?
00:20:40Because I forgot to take my vitamins.
00:20:44I, uh, I'm not sure why I, sorry, I'm, I'm, I'm Taylor.
00:21:08Yeah, you thought I was a guy, didn't you?
00:21:10No.
00:21:11I mean, yes.
00:21:13Yes, I did.
00:21:14Guilty.
00:21:15No, it's all good.
00:21:16It happens all the time in my line of work.
00:21:18Which is personal training?
00:21:21No.
00:21:22I'm flattered, but no, I'm...
00:21:24Sorry, just the screen name, hard as a muscle?
00:21:27Yeah, I'm a doctor.
00:21:29A cardiologist.
00:21:30That's...
00:21:30Doctor?
00:21:31Yeah.
00:21:31I've got the MD and the med school debt to prove it.
00:21:34That's great.
00:21:36And not the debt part.
00:21:39Hey, Taylor, if, um, if you're not interested in coffee, you just say the word.
00:21:45Personally, I love coffee, so I'll be fine with my latte either way.
00:21:57Margot?
00:21:58Mm-hmm.
00:21:59Everything okay?
00:21:59Okay.
00:21:59I just met Amelia Bloom.
00:22:04Already?
00:22:04I thought you confirmed the dates.
00:22:06I did, but she's in town early, and she just casually swung back.
00:22:11Is she still in the shop?
00:22:12Nope, she just left, but she is exactly like I always imagined.
00:22:16Smart and glamorous.
00:22:19Don't go for some nature.
00:22:21Oh, did you...
00:22:22Did you want to meet her?
00:22:24I'm sorry, you're usually behind the scenes, guys.
00:22:25No, no, no, it's fine, actually.
00:22:27It's for the best.
00:22:28We've already met.
00:22:31You know Amelia Bloom?
00:22:35Why didn't you say something?
00:22:37Well, because I don't actually know her, know her.
00:22:39Not anymore.
00:22:43Anyway, this design doesn't really show what makes us special.
00:22:48But we're a bookstore.
00:22:50Yeah.
00:22:50I'd like him to take another pass.
00:22:53Less books.
00:22:54I'll let him down gently.
00:23:04So you really had no idea?
00:23:05No.
00:23:06How could I?
00:23:07It's anonymous.
00:23:08Well, my best friend Max is convinced that he can tell.
00:23:11Like, age, gender, level of desperation.
00:23:15Well, I am happy to prove him wrong.
00:23:17If you guys have that kind of, you know, casual, competitive friendship.
00:23:20Oh, yeah, definitely.
00:23:22Ever since pre-med.
00:23:23Mmm.
00:23:24How is the latte, by the way?
00:23:27Delicious.
00:23:28You know, I've been meaning to come in here for ages.
00:23:30My shop, it's right around the corner.
00:23:31But it's just, it's hard to get away during work hours.
00:23:35It's my first year in business.
00:23:37So it's, it's kind of make or break.
00:23:39You don't have any help?
00:23:40No, I do.
00:23:40I have a college junior who might just be better at my job than I am.
00:23:45It's just, I...
00:23:47You like being in control.
00:23:50Yeah.
00:23:51Yeah, I guess I do.
00:23:54So your post actually really resonated with being a fellow workaholic.
00:23:59Now, I really think that we should reframe it as high-achieving and detail-oriented.
00:24:04Hmm.
00:24:04Yeah, there's plenty of people who get total fulfillment from their work.
00:24:08I wish I got total fulfillment.
00:24:10I think at this point, it's mostly just total fear.
00:24:13Oh.
00:24:14Yeah, I'm not obviously dealing with life or death stakes the way you are, but my business
00:24:20does consume my life.
00:24:23I'm there morning till night, and then even when I'm not there, I'm just worried that it's,
00:24:28you know, catching fire or getting robbed or failing.
00:24:34Wow, I really need to see this flower shop now.
00:24:38You know, it's actually more of a plant store and artisanal goods boutique, but you're welcome
00:24:45anytime.
00:24:46All right.
00:24:48I have a question for you.
00:24:51Shoot.
00:24:53I don't want to offend or anything.
00:24:56It's going to be a good one, then.
00:24:58You know, you seem to have a great career and incredible friends.
00:25:06Don't people try to set you up all the time?
00:25:09Most of the time, it's really just my patients trying to set me up with their grandkids.
00:25:14And always women?
00:25:16Are you asking who they try to set me up with or who I would actually take out?
00:25:22The latter, I guess.
00:25:23I had girlfriends in college and dated women here and there throughout med school.
00:25:31And it just got easier to be a fantastic physician than a fantastic partner.
00:25:38I think now I finally have my feet under me.
00:25:40And if I don't put myself back out there now, maybe I never will.
00:25:47Who knows?
00:25:48Maybe there's someone out there who feels the same and wants to share...
00:25:51Share our life together?
00:25:53Yeah, that.
00:25:54Or I was going to say just a nice bottle of wine in a movie.
00:25:57Oh, yeah.
00:25:58Yeah, that sounds more sane.
00:26:02Light and spontaneous, right?
00:26:04I can't remember the last time I did something spontaneous.
00:26:08Doesn't this count?
00:26:11Yeah.
00:26:12I guess it does.
00:26:14Well, good.
00:26:16Look at you.
00:26:19Look at me.
00:26:20Look at us.
00:26:21Hope you don't mind.
00:26:42I had to open without you.
00:26:43I've texted.
00:26:45Did you?
00:26:47I didn't notice.
00:26:49It looks great, though.
00:26:51You never let me open so low.
00:26:53No?
00:26:54No.
00:26:56Are you okay?
00:26:57Yeah, I'm great.
00:26:58I don't know.
00:27:00Maybe I'm over-caffeinated?
00:27:02No, you're like the opposite of over-caffeinated.
00:27:06Where's my real boss?
00:27:07The one who likes to shelve the aloe plants by height?
00:27:10She's just trying to be more open to things.
00:27:13You know?
00:27:14But do not touch the aloe plants.
00:27:17Want me to get that?
00:27:18No, I got it.
00:27:21Mom.
00:27:24Mom.
00:27:25Look at this place.
00:27:26You really did it.
00:27:28What are you doing here?
00:27:29Well, I thought it was time to come and see what my children have been up to.
00:27:34And, I mean, just look at this.
00:27:38The pots and the plants.
00:27:41It's just fantastic.
00:27:42And you really look the part of a scrappy young business owner.
00:27:46Because I am.
00:27:47Mom.
00:27:48This is not a costume.
00:27:49No, no.
00:27:51It sure is not.
00:27:51Of course.
00:27:52I know that.
00:27:54It's so great to see you, Taylor.
00:27:56I really missed you.
00:27:57Miss Blue.
00:28:00Oh, hi.
00:28:01Hi, I'm Hannah.
00:28:02Nice to meet you.
00:28:03Taylor didn't mention you were coming to Penfield.
00:28:06Well, I'm really just passing through.
00:28:09In fact, you should come to my reading at Between Two Covers later this week.
00:28:14Now it makes sense.
00:28:16I wanted to invite you and Zach personally.
00:28:20Ah, wow.
00:28:21That's so nice.
00:28:22Sort of how I invited you to my grand opening.
00:28:24Ah, I know.
00:28:25I so wish I could have gotten away for that.
00:28:28Yeah.
00:28:28Yeah, me too, Mom.
00:28:30It's been a long time.
00:28:32Well, as a young business owner yourself, you understand how crucial it is to prioritize.
00:28:36Everything but family.
00:28:37Yeah.
00:28:42Is it Hannah?
00:28:43Yeah.
00:28:44Would you mind?
00:28:45Oh, yeah.
00:28:45I'll just go.
00:28:46I'm going to measure the aloe plants.
00:28:54Uh, I am here now, Taylor.
00:28:59And I really am looking forward to spending time with you and your brother.
00:29:04We have so much to catch up on.
00:29:07Yeah, well, unfortunately, I'm really quite busy.
00:29:10Um, I don't know, maybe if you'd called ahead or ever.
00:29:15Well, I sent birthday cards and letters.
00:29:19Yeah.
00:29:20Yeah, Zach still hangs those on the fridge.
00:29:22I'm sure he'd love to see you.
00:29:23Look, I'll, I'll try and come to your thing.
00:29:29Okay?
00:29:29I know how really important it is to you.
00:29:34But I didn't just come here for work.
00:29:36Because we have a lot of things that we need to discuss.
00:29:43Important things.
00:29:44But did you decide to sell the house?
00:29:46Evict Zach?
00:29:47Yeah.
00:29:48Figured that was coming.
00:29:48Taylor.
00:29:50No.
00:29:50Your father trusted me to do the right thing.
00:29:54And I will always take care of you and Zach.
00:29:59Mom, you left.
00:30:01As soon as he died.
00:30:04We went from having two loving parents to none in the space of a year.
00:30:10That's not something you can just fix with a pit stop on your book tour.
00:30:16Now, look, I'm sorry, but I really do have to get back to work.
00:30:20Bitch, I'm sure you understand.
00:30:30Yeah.
00:30:45Oh.
00:30:48Oh.
00:30:50Miss Bloom?
00:30:53Are you okay?
00:30:54Not fine.
00:30:54I'm fine.
00:31:04I'm calling an ambulance.
00:31:05No, no, no.
00:31:06Don't do that.
00:31:07I'm fine.
00:31:08I'm feeling much better already.
00:31:10Okay, great.
00:31:10Then that gives me enough time to drive you to the hospital myself.
00:31:12I just overexerted myself, that's all.
00:31:15I'm going to finish this glass of water, go back to my penthouse.
00:31:18We order room service and kick back for the rest of the night.
00:31:20That sounds extremely glamorous.
00:31:24Unfortunately, I can't let you leave.
00:31:27If this is a misery situation, I want you to know I do carry pepper spray in my purse.
00:31:31I'm not going to kidnap you and force you to write me a book.
00:31:34Well, that's a relief.
00:31:36It's just, I know what those pills are.
00:31:39My grandpa took the same ones before he...
00:31:42The pills.
00:31:45Well, Margo, you've got me there.
00:31:51The truth is that I am...
00:31:54I'm on a deadline for my next book and I haven't written a word in months.
00:31:58I just found out that my daughter hates me.
00:32:02And I think it's just a little unfair that I am having to work through all of that
00:32:08while dealing with a teeny tiny hiccup of just recently having had a heart attack.
00:32:15That's what the pills are for.
00:32:16Okay, are you having a teeny tiny heart attack right now?
00:32:23I don't think so.
00:32:25You don't think so?
00:32:31Mom?
00:32:32So you did know.
00:32:35I was going to text you.
00:32:38She wanted to surprise you.
00:32:39Yeah, well, she did.
00:32:41She showed up at the Bloomeria today and acted like it hadn't been five years.
00:32:45And I take it that was a warm welcome?
00:32:48I think she's really trying, Tay.
00:32:50Do not Tay me.
00:32:52Were you two co-conspirators on this?
00:32:54Did you plan this whole thing?
00:32:55No, I didn't even know she was coming.
00:32:57It just...
00:32:59I don't know.
00:33:01Maybe it's time to leave the past in the past.
00:33:05Cut her a break.
00:33:06Of course she tracked you down first.
00:33:08All right, what's that mean?
00:33:11You're just like Dad.
00:33:14Okay, first of all, she didn't track me down.
00:33:17Okay, whatever you say.
00:33:19And furthermore, what is wrong with being like Dad?
00:33:21Come on, Zach.
00:33:22You let people take advantage of you all the time.
00:33:25That's not true.
00:33:27Really?
00:33:27So, you want to tell me how many drafts you've done of these murals?
00:33:30What, five?
00:33:31Six?
00:33:32Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.
00:33:35And stop holding on to that tiny shred of hope that people won't continually disappoint you.
00:33:40I didn't come.
00:33:48Look, I don't want to fight with you.
00:33:51I'd rather you fight with me than with Mom.
00:33:53I'm sorry.
00:33:55I didn't mean that...
00:33:57I think you said exactly what you meant to say.
00:34:01Maybe you're right.
00:34:03Maybe I am a pushover like that.
00:34:07But I would rather be that than...
00:34:09You know she's only here for her book signing, right?
00:34:15She didn't come to apologize.
00:34:18It's not about us.
00:34:18I should get back to this.
00:34:23Sure.
00:34:36Zach.
00:34:38She had five years to fix all of this.
00:34:43It's too late.
00:34:44So, I will tolerate Mom's presence in Penfield because I love you.
00:34:52But no matter what you want to believe,
00:34:55I know that Mom will be out of here as soon as she gets her fill of her hero worship.
00:35:06I'm listening.
00:35:07Okay, so she's never dated a woman before?
00:35:09So she's straight.
00:35:10Aren't we evolved enough to admit that human sexuality exists on a spectrum?
00:35:14Okay, so she's back.
00:35:18I don't want to assign labels or make any assumptions, okay?
00:35:21She said she's never met a woman who interests her before.
00:35:26You know, sometimes you just don't know until you know, you know?
00:35:30So again, I asked, what's the problem?
00:35:33I just, I don't want to fall for her if we're...
00:35:35if we're destined to end up as platonic friends.
00:35:40Okay.
00:35:41There was this thing between us.
00:35:47You really liked her, huh?
00:35:48Yeah, of course I did.
00:35:50Which inevitably means I'm never going to hear from her again.
00:35:53Come on.
00:35:55Let's probably hear her.
00:35:56Go on, check it.
00:36:00Go on.
00:36:03Check it.
00:36:03I need to blow off some steam.
00:36:10Are you up for an adventure outside of the coffee shop?
00:36:12Ooh.
00:36:14She's asking me out on a date, right?
00:36:16Yeah, an adventure.
00:36:18That could mean anything.
00:36:19Is it a date or not a date?
00:36:21Oh, oh, so now you understand the value of labels I got.
00:36:24Yeah.
00:36:25Not helping.
00:36:26Oh, oh, oh, okay.
00:36:27Okay.
00:36:28So, just ask her for some clarification.
00:36:33But, like, in a flirty way.
00:36:37Flirty clarification.
00:36:39Okay.
00:36:39Okay.
00:36:40Yes.
00:36:40I don't know how to do that.
00:36:46What?
00:36:50What's good?
00:36:51What you doing?
00:36:54Super cash.
00:36:55Now I'm actually interested.
00:36:57I may have gone on a date through that app.
00:37:01You use Classify?
00:37:03Boss, I'm so proud.
00:37:06What, did you totally blow it?
00:37:08No.
00:37:09At least, I don't think I did.
00:37:12It was supposed to be a quick coffee, and we talked for three hours.
00:37:16Ha.
00:37:16I knew something was up.
00:37:18You never let me open so low.
00:37:20Then I asked if they wanted to go on another date, and it's been three blinking dots.
00:37:25Ouch.
00:37:27Wait, so that is bad?
00:37:29Well, not necessarily, but it's probably more complicated than you thought.
00:37:33Like, I don't know, maybe he's seeing multiple people, and he really likes you, but...
00:37:39He just doesn't want to lead you on in case you really like someone else more.
00:37:43Or he's married.
00:37:44That's always a possibility.
00:37:47Don't think it's that.
00:37:49You don't know.
00:37:50People lie.
00:37:50Well, he's not married, and he's not dating a lot of...
00:37:55What am I even saying?
00:37:58Uh, he isn't a he.
00:38:03What is this for?
00:38:08First of all, I'm super proud of you for embracing this new possibility.
00:38:14And second, getting ghosted by a woman has got to be so much harder.
00:38:22I'm not getting ghosted.
00:38:24Am I?
00:38:25Hannah!
00:38:31Okay, I'm just gonna say, I'd love to see you again.
00:38:34Is this a date date?
00:38:35Not a date.
00:38:36Right?
00:38:36Do, do, do, do not send that.
00:38:38No?
00:38:38No, just give me the phone.
00:38:41I'll handle this.
00:38:42Okay.
00:38:42Yeah, I got this.
00:38:43Oh, no, probably wouldn't have.
00:38:45This is Dr. Murray speaking.
00:38:50I'll be right there.
00:38:52Bye.
00:38:53Bye.
00:38:53Bye.
00:38:53Bye.
00:38:53Bye.
00:38:55Go, go.
00:38:58I got this.
00:39:04I know things might seem dark right now, but I promise in time you'll find other women,
00:39:11or men, or whatever.
00:39:14You made real strides today.
00:39:18You're not gonna pass out, are you?
00:39:20I'm not trying to make this about me.
00:39:21Okay.
00:39:22What is it?
00:39:23Is she having a heart attack?
00:39:24Is she dying?
00:39:24No, just, um, you can ignore Margo.
00:39:27Okay.
00:39:28Is this your daughter?
00:39:29No, no.
00:39:30She's actually my bookseller.
00:39:33Oh, which reminds me.
00:39:34Uh, you should really come to my book reading.
00:39:39Yes.
00:39:40Um, yes.
00:39:41Okay.
00:39:42Amelia.
00:39:43Mm-hmm.
00:39:43When you transferred into my care, when you transferred into my care, you promised me that you were gonna stop drinking, you were gonna monitor your diet, and you were gonna take your medication religiously.
00:39:52And you assured me that you had the necessary support systems in place to help you do that here.
00:39:56Well, I have, um, I have Margo.
00:40:01She is very supportive.
00:40:04How do I have you?
00:40:06How do I have you?
00:40:07I'm your doctor.
00:40:08Yes!
00:40:09Yes!
00:40:10Amelia, I thought the whole point of receiving treatment in Penfield was so that you could be closer to your family for their support.
00:40:16Why aren't they here?
00:40:17Yeah.
00:40:19Well, I am, um, I am working on that.
00:40:23Well, your chart indicates that you're not.
00:40:25I'm concerned that you could have another cardiac event.
00:40:27Okay.
00:40:28I will do better.
00:40:29I, I, I will do better, better, better, better, I promise.
00:40:33Well, I'm telling you, at this point, you have no other option.
00:40:43A mimosa while you wait, Ms. Bloom.
00:40:45Oh, yes, please.
00:40:46Actually, sorry, could you just give me the juice part and an herbal tea?
00:40:56No problem.
00:41:05Hi.
00:41:06Hi!
00:41:08Uh, are you being followed?
00:41:11Am I?
00:41:12Zach, it's a joke.
00:41:13Sit down.
00:41:15Sorry, it's just...
00:41:16This feels strange, not inviting Taylor.
00:41:19I doubt you're gonna get spotted here because apparently she never steps foot outside of her shop.
00:41:25We still do family dinner every week.
00:41:27You do?
00:41:28I think you two have been good to each other.
00:41:31Matt, we didn't really have a choice, so...
00:41:33Your juice and the tea.
00:41:36Oh, no, sorry.
00:41:37She only drinks coffee.
00:41:38Buckets and buckets of coffee.
00:41:40No, no, no.
00:41:40Zach, it's, it's totally fine.
00:41:42It's so herbally.
00:41:45Are you okay?
00:41:46I'm so happy that you were free to come and join me for breakfast.
00:41:57Conveniently.
00:41:58So?
00:41:58You have your work.
00:41:59Is that not going well?
00:42:00I'm designing a mural for Between Two Covers.
00:42:02You know, the bookstore, it nearly folded, like, a couple years ago, I think.
00:42:06Yeah, it seems that they're having a comeback if they're commissioning murals and, you know, hosting my book reading.
00:42:12No, at least one of those will be a success.
00:42:14Oh.
00:42:15I'm just a little bit stuck, creatively.
00:42:19Has that ever happened to you?
00:42:20What am I thinking?
00:42:21Book a year, you're a machine.
00:42:23That is not always a good thing, Zach.
00:42:26Your sister, you know what I mean?
00:42:27I mean, she's more like me than, than she'll ever admit.
00:42:30You know, she's stubborn and driven and single-minded and, you know, it's why she's going to make that shop a wild success,
00:42:36but I just hope that she doesn't neglect the rest of her life to see it succeed.
00:42:42Hmm.
00:42:43I was thinking maybe you could, you know, talk to her.
00:42:48It's not like I have all the answers.
00:42:50I mean, my personal life's probably going worse than the mural.
00:42:53Recent highlights include an accidental date with my mom.
00:42:57Maybe you're just an analog guy, like your dad.
00:43:00He was always so old-fashioned that way.
00:43:03I was thinking about our bowling nights recently.
00:43:06I have to confess, I always felt a tiny bit left out.
00:43:09Ah, your dad, he always understood the need to live and play.
00:43:14I kind of struggled with the balance of that.
00:43:20I know that you still miss him.
00:43:24And I want you to know that I miss him.
00:43:28Still.
00:43:31Desperately.
00:43:31I know I haven't been a very present parent, but I'm here now.
00:43:44Let me try.
00:43:47I gotta ask.
00:43:50What's with the tea?
00:43:52Well, that is just a healthier alternative.
00:43:55So, yeah, and I've also stopped drinking.
00:44:01What?
00:44:02Yeah.
00:44:03Hannah, do you know where the rest of the healing amethyst crystals are?
00:44:06I thought we placed another order, but I can't seem to find any.
00:44:10Have you checked wherever you keep your very tiny fairy lights?
00:44:15You laugh.
00:44:17But I do stock very tiny fairy lights.
00:44:19Oh, I would be disappointed if you didn't.
00:44:21That is quite the glass thing.
00:44:27A special order terrarium.
00:44:29Oh.
00:44:30Hi.
00:44:30Hi.
00:44:32You...
00:44:33I...
00:44:33Ah, thank you.
00:44:34Um...
00:44:35You found my shop.
00:44:39I did.
00:44:39Did you know that there are very few artisanal pottery and plant shops within walking distance
00:44:43to Joes?
00:44:44Right.
00:44:45Right.
00:44:45Um...
00:44:46So you aren't ghosting me?
00:44:50Did you expect me to?
00:44:51No.
00:44:52No.
00:44:53I, uh...
00:44:54You know, the three dots of death thing.
00:44:57Um, my employee told me to abandon all hope.
00:45:02Oh, no.
00:45:03I...
00:45:03I'm so sorry I left you hanging.
00:45:05I got called into work last night.
00:45:07Oh.
00:45:07I mean, yeah, I totally get it.
00:45:10I get called into work all the time for emergencies.
00:45:12You know, over-watering emergencies and, and under-watering.
00:45:17I know you're joking, but don't downplay what you do.
00:45:22You managed to keep a small business open in a terrible economy.
00:45:24That's really impressive.
00:45:25I tell her that all the time.
00:45:29Hi.
00:45:30Hi.
00:45:30Sorry, I'm Hannah.
00:45:32Oh, yes.
00:45:33Uh, Frankie.
00:45:34Nice to meet you.
00:45:36You know, we should, uh, find a place to talk.
00:45:39But, um, maybe not here.
00:45:40Can I steal you tonight?
00:45:47I'm not on call.
00:45:49I love this.
00:45:51This is really good.
00:45:53Uh, Hannah.
00:45:55Could you maybe go look for that box of crystals?
00:46:04I, uh, I close up at seven.
00:46:06Seven.
00:46:07Um, okay.
00:46:08Could you sneak away, like, an hour early?
00:46:09I, I really want to show you this, this thing, but it's kind of time-sensitive.
00:46:14Um, that's just a little tough, because I can close tonight, in case anybody was wondering.
00:46:19I will make it work, apparently.
00:46:22Yeah, great.
00:46:24Okay, I will, I'll see you then.
00:46:28Bye.
00:46:28Bye.
00:46:32Good call, boss.
00:46:34She's hot.
00:46:35Hot doctor.
00:46:36Stop.
00:46:379-1-1, I've got a fever, and her name is Dr. Frankie.
00:46:43You know what a second date means, right?
00:46:48We should probably have the talk.
00:46:52Oh, Madeline, Madeline, Madeline.
00:46:54I am going to need your stiffest Shirley Temple.
00:46:58You're sure I can't tempt you with a glass of wine?
00:47:01It's nearly happy hour.
00:47:04No, thank you.
00:47:06This book isn't going to write itself.
00:47:10Excuse me, miss, is this a seat taken?
00:47:12Depends who's asking.
00:47:16Your biggest admirer.
00:47:20Brian Thompson?
00:47:22Yep.
00:47:22Is that you?
00:47:23Yep.
00:47:23What?
00:47:24Oh, my gosh.
00:47:25Hello.
00:47:27Oh.
00:47:30Welcome home, man.
00:47:34So this is why you asked me to leave the clogs at the shop.
00:47:37Well, it's not a super challenging hike.
00:47:39Just enough to get the blood flowing.
00:47:41Okay, just for your information, I'm not super outdoorsy.
00:47:44Most kids, they go camping.
00:47:46I went bowling with my dad.
00:47:49Are you in?
00:47:50I can't believe you have my very first.
00:47:56I mean, and this is an absolutely perfect, perfect condition.
00:47:59You've obviously not read it.
00:48:00Of course I read your book, Em.
00:48:02Really?
00:48:03Yeah, I read all your books.
00:48:04I saved this one for an inscription, if you would do me the honor.
00:48:07Of course.
00:48:08But first, you owe me an explanation.
00:48:12Hmm.
00:48:12What do you mean?
00:48:13How did you know I was staying here?
00:48:16Between two covers.
00:48:17Is Margo going around telling people my business?
00:48:20No.
00:48:21She did, however, tell her employer where to find you.
00:48:24You own the bookstore?
00:48:25Mm-hmm.
00:48:25Yeah.
00:48:26What?
00:48:26You're kind of responsible for that.
00:48:29I used to read their short stories you wrote.
00:48:31Oh.
00:48:32Oh, those were bad.
00:48:33They were fantastic.
00:48:35And they got me hooked.
00:48:37And I started spending way too much time reading while gradually growing to resent my actual job.
00:48:42Which was?
00:48:44Accountant.
00:48:44I know.
00:48:46I know.
00:48:47Sorry.
00:48:48But I'm really good at balancing the books now.
00:48:51So what made you decide to buy the bookstore?
00:48:54Some people go through a midlife crisis after my divorce.
00:48:59Between two covers was mine.
00:49:01Oh.
00:49:01No.
00:49:02No.
00:49:03No infidelity.
00:49:04No kids.
00:49:05Nothing like that.
00:49:06Nothing for your next book.
00:49:08I just came to realize that I was more excited about the prospect of saving a community treasure
00:49:14than I was saving my own marriage.
00:49:17And ironically, for once, my ex was on the same page.
00:49:20I have to confess, I wasn't sure that Benfield would ever get you back after your husband's best.
00:49:31Miss Bloom.
00:49:32Oh, thank you.
00:49:33What are you drinking?
00:49:34Oh, this is a Shirley Temple.
00:49:36A Shirley Temple.
00:49:37Yeah.
00:49:38Well, I'm working and I'm, you know, I'm trying a whole new diet.
00:49:46Why?
00:49:47You're stunning.
00:49:48You're as stunning as you ever were.
00:49:50Oh.
00:49:50Well, thank you.
00:49:51Um, but no, it's just, um, yeah, it's not a vanity thing.
00:49:57Oh.
00:49:57Just.
00:50:00Is it a health thing?
00:50:07Oh.
00:50:09Not too bad, right?
00:50:11I mean, please tell me I don't have to start hiking on the regular.
00:50:15Sometimes it's worth the effort.
00:50:21I gotta be honest.
00:50:24I really don't know what I'm doing.
00:50:27Yeah, well, it's just one foot in front of the other, really.
00:50:30I am not talking about hiking.
00:50:34Yeah, I know.
00:50:37Frankie, you are amazing.
00:50:41In every way.
00:50:42But, yeah.
00:50:45I wouldn't be so worried
00:51:13if I wasn't convinced I was going to somehow screw this up.
00:51:17Well, if that's your main concern,
00:51:22I can promise you that we all screw it up at some point.
00:51:27Well, that's comforting.
00:51:29Just being honest.
00:51:36That doesn't scare me.
00:51:40That makes one of us.
00:51:43Hey.
00:51:48Is Taylor in the back?
00:51:51No.
00:51:53No.
00:51:55Is she doing a delivery or something?
00:51:58Don't think so.
00:52:01Huh.
00:52:04She's not answering my texts.
00:52:06Nobody's answering my texts.
00:52:07I guess Taylor's pretty busy.
00:52:09But not with work.
00:52:12See, that's very unlike Taylor.
00:52:17What's going on, Adam?
00:52:19I know you know.
00:52:21How's your, uh, mural going, Zach?
00:52:25You know about that?
00:52:26I got my sources.
00:52:28Years in the street.
00:52:28Well, it's, uh, it's going great.
00:52:31It's going really well.
00:52:32Great.
00:52:32Mm-hmm.
00:52:33Hmm.
00:52:34Top notch.
00:52:36Okay, well, just tell Taylor I came by, all right?
00:52:39I'm making dinner this week.
00:52:40Whatever she wants.
00:52:41But that would actually require her to answer my messages.
00:52:45That hack is a plague.
00:52:48It only works if you work it.
00:52:50Yeah, yeah.
00:52:51Yeah.
00:52:51I cannot believe how long it's been.
00:53:01I really didn't mean to stay away as long as I did.
00:53:05It was just once I was gone, it was easier not to feel his crushing absence every single
00:53:09second of every single day.
00:53:11We built a life here together.
00:53:14We built a home.
00:53:15We shared our first kiss right across the street.
00:53:23I can see how that would be difficult.
00:53:26Impossible.
00:53:29And the kids don't understand.
00:53:32I did not leave to hurt them.
00:53:34I left so that they wouldn't have to live with all of my pain.
00:53:38They had enough of their own to deal with.
00:53:40And did you explain it to them like that?
00:53:42Well, I mean, Taylor wouldn't let me, and besides, I'm just really not good at these conversations.
00:53:51Andy was always the one that comforted them.
00:53:55You just gotta find a way to talk to Taylor.
00:53:59If she's anything like you, she'll understand.
00:54:02Once you get past the bristly, angry part.
00:54:05Good luck to me.
00:54:07Right.
00:54:07I'm sorry.
00:54:09I, you know what, I really didn't mean to unload all of this on you.
00:54:13I should have just signed your book and let you, let you go on your way.
00:54:21I don't feel that way.
00:54:26I think we both know that I've always had a thing for you.
00:54:30Really?
00:54:30Yeah.
00:54:34It just, it felt wrong bringing it up with your husband.
00:54:37Oh, please.
00:54:38He knew too.
00:54:39Why do you think you proposed so quickly?
00:54:41I knew it.
00:54:42See?
00:54:42You snooze, you lose, buddy.
00:54:43That's the way it goes.
00:54:46It's nice to think that we still have time to make new choices.
00:54:51And me with the bookstore.
00:54:54You with your kids.
00:54:55Well, I certainly know that it's on me to make things right.
00:54:59After my heart attack, I realized, oh, maybe I don't have all the time in the world to find my way back there.
00:55:05And then my kids will never know why I left.
00:55:10Oh, God.
00:55:13Hey.
00:55:15You okay?
00:55:16No, no, it's not that.
00:55:18Hey, I, look, let me take you back to the hotel.
00:55:20You know what?
00:55:22If you don't mind, I think I have a better idea.
00:55:27Taylor?
00:55:28Is that you?
00:55:31Hi, honey.
00:55:33Mom.
00:55:34All right.
00:55:35Call me for you again.
00:55:36Thank you so much.
00:55:41I'm home.
00:55:44So, you're moving in?
00:55:47Um, you offered, didn't you?
00:55:49Yeah, you turned me down.
00:55:51I thought you were leaving town right after your reading.
00:55:53I never said that.
00:55:54No, I think that, um, I think there are some reasons that I should stick around for a while.
00:55:59It's not because of that guy, right?
00:56:01I mean, where'd you even meet him?
00:56:03Technically, the hotel bar.
00:56:04Mom, you've got to be careful.
00:56:07He could be trying to scam you.
00:56:08I mean, you're kind of a high-profile person around here.
00:56:10Oh, just around here?
00:56:11I was looking for international notoriety.
00:56:14You know what I mean.
00:56:15He's not trying to scam me, Zach.
00:56:17He's an old friend.
00:56:18I know, it's weird to think that I had a life before kids.
00:56:23But I did.
00:56:24Mom.
00:56:24Zach, Zach, Zach, Zach, Zach.
00:56:26I did not come here to talk about Brian, okay?
00:56:29I should have told you this right from the start.
00:56:38I didn't come to Penfield for a stop on my book tour.
00:56:43I asked my publisher to find a reason to send me here because I needed to see you and your sister.
00:56:49What's going on?
00:56:49I had a heart attack.
00:56:53A heart attack?
00:56:54A few months ago.
00:56:55Mom.
00:56:56But don't worry.
00:56:57I am being treated by an excellent specialist.
00:57:00It's just that the whole recovery thing apparently is...
00:57:06could take longer than I expected.
00:57:09I can't believe you had a heart attack and didn't tell us.
00:57:15Now you're mad?
00:57:17No, I'm not mad.
00:57:18I'm furious.
00:57:19Well, I wanted to tell you earlier, but your sister...
00:57:22No, no, no.
00:57:22Don't blame her.
00:57:24I know she gives you a hard time, but that was your choice.
00:57:28We've always been living with the repercussions of your choices.
00:57:31I mean, you think you're protecting us by keeping a distance from us, but you're just driving a wedge deeper.
00:57:38Sorry, Zach.
00:57:44Clearly this was a bad idea.
00:57:46Clearly.
00:57:46I mean, it was a bad idea, and I knew it was a bad idea.
00:57:48Right, well, there you go again.
00:57:49Just walking away.
00:57:50Just like Taylor Wood said, put your bags down.
00:57:52Mom.
00:57:55All right, this isn't a debate.
00:58:01Zach, you are such a gifted artist.
00:58:10And why am I eating this so hard?
00:58:12I've made half a dozen versions.
00:58:14They've all been rejected by this mystery owner of Between Two Covers.
00:58:17Well, I'm sure that he or she knows how capable you are.
00:58:20It's just a matter of, you know, reconceptualizing.
00:58:25I think I'm going to tell them to find another artist.
00:58:29What?
00:58:31Mom, you can tell me.
00:58:33I don't want to wear out my welcome that quickly.
00:58:35Mom.
00:58:36Ugh.
00:58:36Your dad was always so good at this.
00:58:38He always knew what to say, when to say it, how to say it.
00:58:43I mean, it really was because of him that I finished my first book.
00:58:51Yeah, I think he's the only reason I ever finished art school.
00:58:54See?
00:58:54I mean, sometimes I feel like I'm trying to be helpful, but it just comes off as criticism.
00:59:03Well, that's not entirely inaccurate.
00:59:06But this time, I am asking for your feedback.
00:59:10So, lay it on me.
00:59:12Well, just maybe you're focusing too much on the business.
00:59:19You know, where are the people that make Penfield special and unique?
00:59:24You know, not the dead famous authors, but the real flesh and blood people.
00:59:30So, now that we've established I am completely capable of opening and closing on my own, I think it's time for a serious discussion regarding my compensation.
00:59:55Oh, aren't you getting a little ahead of yourself?
00:59:57Too many women sell themselves short with salary negotiations.
01:00:00Hannah, you're not wrong.
01:00:02And I would love to give you a raise, but I'm just, I'm stretched as thin as I can right now.
01:00:06So, what you're saying is, if profits go up, I get my raise?
01:00:10You make it sound so easy.
01:00:12No worries, boss.
01:00:14I got you.
01:00:17So, another date with the hot dog?
01:00:21What's it this time?
01:00:22Movie under the stars?
01:00:24Conceptual pottery class?
01:00:26Are you adopting a cat together?
01:00:28Okay, slow down.
01:00:29We've only had a handful of dates.
01:00:31I don't know.
01:00:31I believe that's a very typical timeline for co-parenting a cat with another woman.
01:00:35Uh-huh.
01:00:36I will see you first thing tomorrow.
01:00:38Don't burn the place down.
01:00:40Okay, I only saged it once.
01:00:42And the fire was completely...
01:00:44...contained.
01:00:51Alright, family dinner.
01:00:53Let's do this.
01:00:54For once, I have a lot to pull you in on.
01:00:58Hey, honey.
01:00:59I hope you don't mind.
01:01:00I am cooking tonight.
01:01:03What is going on?
01:01:05Mom's kind of, uh, staying here now.
01:01:09You set me up.
01:01:11No, no, no, no.
01:01:12No one set anybody up.
01:01:13Uh, it's family dinner tonight, and I'm part of the family.
01:01:18Still.
01:01:19You know, I had a lot that I needed to talk to you about, alone.
01:01:22Tay, come on.
01:01:24It's one dinner.
01:01:25I'll see you next week.
01:01:28Taylor.
01:01:32You gonna make me chase you?
01:01:34Come on, Tay, wait.
01:01:36Look, I should have told you she was here, but I didn't think you'd come.
01:01:38Yeah, of course I wouldn't have.
01:01:40I thought I made myself perfectly clear.
01:01:42You can make nice with her all you want.
01:01:44I am not interested.
01:01:45There are things she wants to tell you.
01:01:47Needs to tell you.
01:01:48Okay?
01:01:49And I can't...
01:01:50I can't choose between you two anymore.
01:01:53Look, this isn't what Dad would have wanted.
01:01:54For any of us.
01:01:57I'm not ready.
01:02:00I...
01:02:00I just...
01:02:02I really wanted to talk to my brother tonight.
01:02:04And you still can.
01:02:06Hey, do you really want to play fake happy family all dinner?
01:02:09No.
01:02:11Okay, no dinner.
01:02:15Change your plans.
01:02:24Hey, not bad.
01:02:38You have impeccable form.
01:02:39And, uh, really bad aim.
01:02:41Why do I remember being so much better at this?
01:02:43Because Dad always let us use bumpers.
01:02:45No, he didn't.
01:02:46Yeah, he did.
01:02:47Until you hit puberty and started growing a mustache.
01:02:50My turn.
01:02:51Watch and learn, bro.
01:02:54I don't know what it is.
01:02:58No.
01:02:59I don't know.
01:03:08What?
01:03:09Thank you very much.
01:03:10That looked ridiculous.
01:03:11That does not count.
01:03:13Zachary, Zachary, Zachary.
01:03:15You gotta just find what works for you
01:03:16and quit worrying what it looks like to everyone else.
01:03:20Okay.
01:03:21Yoda.
01:03:22That was slushy for you, I think.
01:03:24Yeah.
01:03:24Zachary.
01:03:29Zach.
01:03:31This was a really good idea.
01:03:34Mostly because I want it.
01:03:37Okay.
01:03:43Oh!
01:03:45That's right.
01:03:49Margo.
01:03:50I guess the, uh, bowling league lured you back in for a year with a, uh...
01:03:57Bowling league?
01:03:58You're guilty as charged.
01:04:01Actually, I've been finding the seeds of revolution.
01:04:03Trying to unseat the power-tripping desk by who runs it.
01:04:06Oh, yeah.
01:04:07Oh, yeah.
01:04:07I mean, I can see that.
01:04:09You know, I could always, uh, infiltrate the team and help bring them down or something.
01:04:13Actually, I had to look like that.
01:04:17Great.
01:04:18Put it in my calendar.
01:04:20Hey, Zach.
01:04:21You, uh, ready to go?
01:04:22Uh, yeah.
01:04:23Um, Margo, this is, uh, Taylor.
01:04:24My sister.
01:04:26Yeah.
01:04:27Um, Taylor, this is Margo.
01:04:28She manages the bookstore.
01:04:30It is really nice to meet you.
01:04:32I'm super impressed with what you've done with the place.
01:04:34Oh, thanks.
01:04:35It'll be even better once Zach's mural is up.
01:04:38Yeah, about that.
01:04:39Um, I think I may have something for you soon.
01:04:43Really?
01:04:44Really?
01:04:45Yeah.
01:04:45Mom helped me with it.
01:04:47Really.
01:04:49Oh, well, I, uh, I can't wait to see it.
01:04:52And I'll keep you in the loop about the, uh, the revolution.
01:04:54Yes.
01:04:56Revolution.
01:04:56Well, uh, have a, have a good, uh, bowl.
01:05:03Say it, bowl.
01:05:04Yeah.
01:05:04Thanks.
01:05:04All right.
01:05:04It's so nice for you now.
01:05:06Yeah.
01:05:06We're gonna go now.
01:05:07Bye.
01:05:07I'll, um, I'll, I'll send you the thing.
01:05:09Yep, yep, yep, yep, yep, he'll, he'll do the thing.
01:05:11Bye.
01:05:12What happened to you, Spencer?
01:05:13I don't know.
01:05:14It just came out of my mouth.
01:05:16Oh, my gosh.
01:05:18You should ask her out.
01:05:19But, like, on a real date, please, don't take her bowling.
01:05:22It is not romantic.
01:05:24Yeah, I don't think she's interested.
01:05:25Well, she's definitely interested.
01:05:28Yeah, you don't know this girl.
01:05:30I mean, she's got a very strong opinion about women's independence, don't you?
01:05:33She also had a very strong opinion about your butt, so.
01:05:36Okay, no.
01:05:37We're not going there.
01:05:38We're not discussing that.
01:05:39Why not?
01:05:41Well, first off, since when are you the authority on dating?
01:05:44I mean, you haven't dated anybody since, what, college?
01:05:46I'm actually seeing someone now.
01:05:51No, you weren't.
01:05:53I am.
01:05:54I swear, it's, uh, it's new, but it's actually going really well.
01:06:01Say, Laura.
01:06:01That's why I freaked out about dinner.
01:06:05I wanted to tell you.
01:06:07What, you didn't want Mom to know that you're dating someone?
01:06:10I didn't want Mom to know that I am dating a woman.
01:06:14Oh.
01:06:20Not, not because she's a she, just, like, Mom and I don't have that kind of relationship.
01:06:28You know, I can't talk to her about the big stuff.
01:06:33Well, maybe she can't talk to you either.
01:06:35Either way, I don't need her pretending to care.
01:06:38I wouldn't hate some help from you, though.
01:06:45Could you please say something?
01:06:48Well, I don't know what to say.
01:06:50I mean, does it really matter?
01:06:53Does it make a difference?
01:06:55I mean, I don't care if you date a woman or a man or both.
01:06:59Just, as long as whoever it is is good to you.
01:07:07Did I say the wrong thing?
01:07:08You said exactly the right thing.
01:07:19You're the first person I've told, besides Hannah.
01:07:22You told Hannah before me?
01:07:23I may or may not have briefly spiraled.
01:07:28Well, I think it's great.
01:07:31So, what will I refer to this woman as?
01:07:32I can't just keep calling her this woman.
01:07:35Frankie.
01:07:36Okay.
01:07:37Francesca.
01:07:38Um, from Classify.
01:07:41You did.
01:07:43I definitely did.
01:07:45Um, yeah, you should take that.
01:07:47She probably thinks I murdered you and responded with the body.
01:07:50Uh-huh.
01:07:51Hey, Mom.
01:07:53That's fine.
01:07:53We're just...
01:07:54Yes.
01:07:59We'll be right there.
01:08:01We gotta go.
01:08:03That was Penfield General.
01:08:05Mom's just been admitted.
01:08:05Mom, you had a heart attack and you weren't gonna tell us?
01:08:18Oh, Dr. Murray, these are my children.
01:08:21My son, Zach, and my daughter, Taylor.
01:08:23Hi, Dr. Francesca Murray.
01:08:25Nice to meet you.
01:08:25Are you kidding me right now?
01:08:27Taylor.
01:08:27Zach.
01:08:28Perhaps we should discuss your mother's condition.
01:08:29Oh, yes, please.
01:08:31Uh, excuse me.
01:08:32Yes, very interested.
01:08:33But, um, first, could someone tell me who this is?
01:08:36That's my Brian.
01:08:37I'm an old friend of your mother's.
01:08:39Great.
01:08:39Now that that's perfectly clear.
01:08:41Taylor, please, Dr. Murray was...
01:08:43Would you prefer if we spoke in private?
01:08:44No, no, no.
01:08:45No, I am done keeping secrets from them.
01:08:47That is what got me here in the first place.
01:08:50Well, based on what I'm seeing,
01:08:51Amelia is no longer suffering from a heart attack.
01:08:53Oh.
01:08:54She is, however, suffering from a panic disorder,
01:08:56which could trigger many of the same symptoms.
01:08:58Shortness of breath, tightness in the chest.
01:09:00The good news is that it doesn't cause
01:09:02the same sort of physical damage to the heart muscle.
01:09:04And now that we know what's going on,
01:09:06we can more effectively treat it.
01:09:07When you were pretty upset earlier,
01:09:08could that cause a panic attack?
01:09:10Emotional upset can absolutely be a factor.
01:09:12Yes.
01:09:12Okay, so, uh, so it's our fault,
01:09:14then, or my fault, rather.
01:09:16Right?
01:09:16Right, Frankie?
01:09:18Uh, there can be any number of contributing factors.
01:09:22Wait, this is good news, right?
01:09:25Yeah.
01:09:25Wait, wait, wait.
01:09:26Frankie, Frankie, Frankie?
01:09:27Like, Frankie, Frankie?
01:09:30Did you know she was Mom's doctor?
01:09:32Till 20 minutes ago,
01:09:33I didn't even know Mom had a doctor.
01:09:35What am I missing here?
01:09:36You know what?
01:09:37I'm gonna go get some air.
01:09:39Does anyone need anything?
01:09:40No?
01:09:41Good.
01:09:42Uh, Zach, will you go check on your sister, please?
01:09:49Yeah.
01:09:49You know what?
01:09:50Let me.
01:09:51You should stay with your mom.
01:09:55What?
01:09:56What is going on there?
01:09:57I don't know what you're talking about.
01:09:59Okay, but they know each other.
01:10:00Yeah, no, it seems like it, doesn't it?
01:10:02Yeah.
01:10:03But she's a cardiologist,
01:10:04and your sister pots plants.
01:10:05I mean, they don't exactly, you know,
01:10:07move around in the same circles.
01:10:08Maybe we should put the oxygen mask back on.
01:10:10They'll be back in a minute.
01:10:11We can...
01:10:11But they're friends.
01:10:12Mm-hmm.
01:10:13Yeah, no, it looks like that.
01:10:14Yeah.
01:10:14Like, friends with palpable tension.
01:10:16Mm-hmm.
01:10:18Are they involved?
01:10:19Yeah.
01:10:20Should I get a nurse?
01:10:21You okay?
01:10:21No, do not get a nurse.
01:10:24My daughter is dating a doctor.
01:10:33I didn't make the connection
01:10:34until she listed you as her emergency contact.
01:10:37You never talk about your mom.
01:10:38My last name wasn't a giant red flag for you?
01:10:41No, it wasn't rooting for you.
01:10:44Right.
01:10:44Even if I had found out sooner,
01:10:47I don't regret getting to know you.
01:10:50I wouldn't take that back for anything.
01:10:53She listed me as her emergency contact.
01:10:55You and your brother?
01:10:57We've barely spoken in years.
01:11:01I know I'm just getting to know Amelia,
01:11:02and I know she puts on a tough front,
01:11:04but I think she's got a lot of regrets.
01:11:07Well, she should.
01:11:09She came a long way to seek this treatment.
01:11:11She could have gone to another specialist
01:11:13in another city, and she didn't.
01:11:15She came here to be near you.
01:11:20Didn't tell me you were a therapist, too.
01:11:22Taylor, how would you feel
01:11:24if it had been another heart attack?
01:11:26Is this how you'd want to leave things with your mom?
01:11:28You know, if you said so yourself,
01:11:29you're just getting to know her.
01:11:31I've had decades of experience.
01:11:33Panic disorder?
01:11:34No, it's Amelia got her feelings hurt,
01:11:37and then she called a doting admirer
01:11:39to come comfort her,
01:11:40and now the whole rest of the world
01:11:41has to stop to accommodate her.
01:11:43You're wrong.
01:11:44Wow.
01:11:45And you're being sort of cynical,
01:11:47which is not your best look.
01:11:49If that's what you think of me...
01:11:50That's how you're behaving.
01:11:52How about I just make it really easy for us, then?
01:11:56From now on, let's just stick to our jobs.
01:11:58Finished all my tasks.
01:12:11Thanks.
01:12:13And got a head start on inventory.
01:12:15Sounds good.
01:12:16And since you're suddenly all checked out,
01:12:18I'll be heading up our new marketing push myself.
01:12:21Great, thanks.
01:12:24Wait.
01:12:26What new marketing push?
01:12:28Look, boss.
01:12:29It's clear to me you've got a lot of life stuff
01:12:32you're dealing with right now,
01:12:33so I'm more than happy to take on
01:12:35the store stuff for a while.
01:12:36Hannah,
01:12:37what did you do exactly?
01:12:43We are
01:12:44expanding our digital footprint.
01:12:48Plant moms and plant daddies.
01:12:52Plant daddies?
01:12:53Well, I was gonna go for
01:12:54all my plant-loving nomies,
01:12:56you know, to be more inclusive,
01:12:57but it was over the word count.
01:12:59Go green and shop local.

01:13:06That's gonna cut into our bottom line.
01:13:08All I'm asking is for you
01:13:08to give it a chance.
01:13:10Increased foot traffic
01:13:11will more than make up for the discount.
01:13:13Um, what increased foot traffic?
01:13:15I just posted it today.
01:13:17You gotta have more faith in people.
01:13:19They showed up for other businesses
01:13:20that posted on Classify,
01:13:21they'll show up for us.
01:13:22And then, you can give me my raise.
01:13:24I will leave it up for a day.
01:13:26Not ideal,
01:13:27but I can work with that.
01:13:29You do remember I own this place, yeah?
01:13:32Yes, and on that note,
01:13:33I was hoping to petition you
01:13:35for a slight alteration to the schedule.
01:13:38I would like to leave earlier today.
01:13:40Like, approximately now.
01:13:42Now?
01:13:43Yeah, there's an event I'd like to attend.
01:13:49It's my mom's book signing, isn't it?
01:13:52Sorry.
01:13:53I've been obsessed with your mom's spy novels
01:13:55ever since my aunt inappropriately gifted them to me,
01:13:57thinking they were travel guides for young adults.
01:13:59It's fine.
01:14:01Go.
01:14:01Have a nice time.
01:14:03You're the best.
01:14:04I'm gonna say something and hope you don't fire me, okay?
01:14:11Well, I haven't fired you yet, have I?
01:14:14Some people don't have moms, you know?
01:14:16Let alone wildly creative and complicated type moms
01:14:22that don't just tell you,
01:14:24but also show you how you can be
01:14:26whatever you want to be when you grow up.
01:14:28Look, Hannah, I know you mean well.
01:14:30I'm just saying that
01:14:30those types of people that don't have those moms,
01:14:34they end up seeking out
01:14:35unconventional female mentorship,
01:14:37like at their part-time job, for example.
01:14:40She left me.
01:14:43No, I know, but look.
01:14:47I mean, look how much your world has grown.
01:14:50And maybe hers has too, and that's why she's back.
01:14:55Really, how are you gonna know
01:14:56unless you just, you know, talk to her?
01:15:03Am I fired?
01:15:05No.
01:15:07No, you're not fired.
01:15:10You're right.
01:15:11You should go.
01:15:13Have a great time.
01:15:15And Hannah, mom or no mom,
01:15:19you still managed to become
01:15:20one of the best people that I know.
01:15:26Okay.
01:15:35All right, that's it.
01:15:37If you delete an app, I'm deleting an app.
01:15:39It's not the app's fault I've felt.
01:15:41You know, a narcissist with mommy problems.
01:15:43You haven't even met her.
01:15:44No, no, but as your best friend,
01:15:46it's my job to blindly protect you.
01:15:48So I'm assuming this is entirely on her,
01:15:50and you're a blameless angel, my friend.
01:15:52Okay.
01:15:53Well, I may have overstepped a little
01:15:55with the unsolicited advice.
01:15:57No, you give great advice.
01:16:00It'll be real comfort to me when I'm old and alone.
01:16:02I don't know, old, maybe, alone, never.
01:16:07I will be on this bar, Stu, whenever you need me.
01:16:11I mean, unless I meet my dream guy,
01:16:13in which case, we'll still invite you over
01:16:15like all the time.
01:16:20Hey, hey, you want to cut it out with the PDA?
01:16:23People are going to think you're a couple.
01:16:24You're right.
01:16:29Hey, um, since you got the evening off,
01:16:31I said we'd double down.
01:16:32Order something really poisonous and hard to pronounce.
01:16:34Yeah.
01:16:36Duh.
01:16:42Take it that wasn't mommy problems?
01:16:44No.
01:16:46That's her loss.
01:16:49Okay?
01:16:50Yeah.
01:16:51Yeah.
01:16:52All right.
01:16:54What are we ordering?
01:16:56Ashley, would you be my plus one for something?
01:16:59Um, yes.
01:17:01Okay.
01:17:09Admire your hard work?
01:17:10Our hard work.
01:17:12Thanks for pitching in.
01:17:14There's no way I could have pulled this off alone.
01:17:16Well, thank goodness the owner
01:17:18finally got out of his own way.
01:17:19Well, it might have helped
01:17:20that he's got a soft spot for my mom.
01:17:23Not at all.
01:17:23I mean, I absolutely adore Amelia.
01:17:27I didn't do you any favors.
01:17:28Your mural is spectacular, Zach.
01:17:31It announces that it's always been the people
01:17:32that make Penfield so special.
01:17:34The town deserves it.
01:17:35It's why I bought the bookstore in the first place.
01:17:37I think there's still room
01:17:39for a little cameo
01:17:40of Penfield's most celebrated author.
01:17:42So, did you talk to your sister?
01:17:48She isn't coming, Mom.
01:17:51I texted, I called.
01:17:54It's been radio silence.
01:17:57Hey, it's gonna be a full house.
01:18:00Dozens of adoring fans.
01:18:01And why don't I get you set up in the back,
01:18:03relax a little bit
01:18:04before we open the floodgates.
01:18:06Great.
01:18:09Well, I hope you are as happy
01:18:11with the final product as we are.
01:18:13Hmm, actually...
01:18:15What?
01:18:16Can't be serious.
01:18:17I don't think I accurately captured your essence.
01:18:23Oh, really?
01:18:24And what is my essence exactly, hmm?
01:18:27Neurotic bookworm?
01:18:28Brainy, persistent, original.
01:18:32All the qualities that would convince a guy
01:18:34who hasn't had much luck with love
01:18:35to take a shot and ask the girl out.
01:18:42Please don't say you have to run that by your boss.
01:18:44I think that is a really solid proposal.
01:18:52And I'm in.
01:18:57Uh, did we just make that happen?
01:19:00I think that might be Brian's very subtle way
01:19:02of telling me to go do my job.
01:19:05Right.
01:19:06Buy me after?
01:19:08Definitely.
01:19:14Zach.
01:19:20Dr. Murray.
01:19:20Hey.
01:19:21I didn't know you were coming.
01:19:22Honestly, I didn't either.
01:19:23Until Amelia sent me the invite.
01:19:25I wasn't sure it'd be welcome.
01:19:26Of course you are.
01:19:28But, um, I don't think Taylor's gonna show up, so...
01:19:32But, hey, if you wouldn't mind,
01:19:34would you maybe help me keep an eye on Mom?
01:19:35Yeah.
01:19:36Make sure she doesn't know what to do.
01:19:38Hey, Frankie, have you seen this?
01:19:40Uh...
01:19:40I'm gonna sue for infringement.
01:19:41Infringement on what?
01:19:43My impeccable gel line, for starters.
01:19:45Okay, technically that's covered under artistic license.
01:19:48So, all right.
01:19:50Did she know that you painted her?
01:19:52She's been pretty distant since the hospital.
01:19:54I take it she hasn't?
01:19:56No.
01:19:57You want to know the worst thing about my sister?
01:20:00Besides her bowling technique.
01:20:02Her clogs?
01:20:03Bowling.
01:20:04The person she's best at punishing is herself.
01:20:11Yeah.
01:20:14Good evening, dear book lovers.
01:20:18Without further ado,
01:20:19Between Two Covers is thrilled to introduce
01:20:21a woman who needs no introduction,
01:20:24Penfield's very own Queen of Romans,
01:20:27author Amelia Bloom.
01:20:30Hello.
01:20:31Hello.
01:20:32Hello.
01:20:32Hello.
01:20:33Hello.
01:20:33Hello.
01:20:34Hello.
01:20:35Hello.
01:20:36Hello.
01:20:37Hello.
01:20:38Hello.
01:20:39Hello.
01:20:40Hello.
01:20:41Hello.
01:20:42Hello.
01:20:43Hello.
01:20:44Hello.
01:20:45Hello.
01:20:46Hello.
01:20:47Hello.
01:20:48Hello.
01:20:49Hello.
01:20:50Hello.
01:20:51Hello.
01:20:52Hello.
01:20:53Hello.
01:20:54Hello.
01:20:55Hello.
01:20:56Hello.
01:20:57Hello.
01:20:58Hello.
01:20:59Hello.
01:21:00Thank you so much.
01:21:18Thank you, Margo.
01:21:19And a special thank you to Between Two Covers
01:21:22for hosting me tonight.
01:21:23I look forward to signing everyone's copies of my books
01:21:26after I have read an excerpt from my latest novel,
01:21:32The Problem with Prague.
01:21:35I have done this a few thousand times,
01:21:38but tonight just feels different.
01:21:41Since coming home to Penfield, I've just felt...
01:21:49Well, it's been...
01:21:51It's been an awakening.
01:21:56I left Penfield five years ago
01:22:00after my husband passed away.
01:22:02Well, left.
01:22:03Fled.
01:22:04The semantics are debatable.
01:22:06The reality is that I, uh...
01:22:08I abandoned my children.
01:22:12They were grown children,
01:22:15but, um...
01:22:17I stranded them to handle their grief alone.
01:22:22And for that, I am very sorry.
01:22:24The thing is,
01:22:27I really am not trying to make excuses here,
01:22:30but I could not imagine
01:22:31spending the rest of my life
01:22:33in the place that I'd raised my family
01:22:35without their father by my side.
01:22:36I assume you've all read my books?
01:22:49Sometimes,
01:22:51well, often,
01:22:54I write about love
01:22:56more nimbly than I manage it
01:22:59for myself.
01:23:00And I have missed out on so much
01:23:03while I've been away.
01:23:06This mural behind me,
01:23:07this was painted by my extraordinarily talented son.
01:23:11He is an artist
01:23:15like me,
01:23:17but he sculpts his worlds
01:23:19with shape
01:23:20and color
01:23:22instead of dusty old words.
01:23:27And he always sees the best in everyone,
01:23:30even when they let him down.
01:23:33And there I go
01:23:37talking about myself again.
01:23:41But that is a thing
01:23:42that my daughter might say about me,
01:23:44and, you know,
01:23:45she is not wrong,
01:23:46but she, too,
01:23:47is a bit of a chip off the old block,
01:23:49and she is living proof
01:23:50that sometimes
01:23:52being stubborn and driven
01:23:53is not a bad thing.
01:23:55Because without any help from anyone,
01:23:58least of all me,
01:23:59she has opened
01:24:00the Bloom area
01:24:00just down the street,
01:24:02a beautiful plant store.
01:24:04You should all go down there
01:24:05and see
01:24:05what her hard work
01:24:06and vision has created.
01:24:11And I wish she knew
01:24:13how proud I am
01:24:14of every brave choice
01:24:16she has made for herself.
01:24:19I just wish
01:24:21she would reconsider
01:24:22calling it off
01:24:22with my cardiologist,
01:24:23and I am happy
01:24:24to accept a referral elsewhere,
01:24:26but that's what it takes.
01:24:27All of that to say
01:24:31that going forward
01:24:33in my personal life
01:24:34and with my writing,
01:24:35I want to pay tribute
01:24:38to the more complicated
01:24:39love stories
01:24:40that surround us
01:24:41because they're not all flawless.
01:24:43They're not all romantic.
01:24:47They're not all expected.
01:24:49And I don't need
01:24:51to transport myself
01:24:52or my readers
01:24:53to some far-flung country
01:24:55to find those love stories.
01:24:58Sometimes they're just
01:24:58right around the corner.
01:25:01Sometimes it's even
01:25:03on Classify.
01:25:08Local author
01:25:09ready to bloom
01:25:10where she's planted.
01:25:13Sounds awfully familiar.
01:25:14Just back in town
01:25:15and hoping to connect
01:25:16with familiar faces
01:25:17and new friends alike,
01:25:19let's write
01:25:20a beautiful story together.
01:25:22My chat
01:25:23is open.
01:25:28All right,
01:25:33shall we get started?
01:25:34Yeah!
01:25:36The Problem with Prague,
01:25:38chapter one.
01:25:41Her body ached.
01:25:43A constellation
01:25:43of fading bruises
01:25:45stretched from her right hip.
01:25:47Oh, I think I've lost
01:25:48my senses
01:25:49Am I walking straight
01:25:50into a burning light?
01:25:54A burning light?
01:25:57Cheers.
01:26:00Our queen coming through.
01:26:04Beautiful.
01:26:05Right here, my dear.
01:26:08Hey, Mom.
01:26:09You plan on joining us
01:26:10anytime soon?
01:26:11Yes, absolutely.
01:26:13Just sometimes
01:26:14you have to get it down
01:26:15when the inspiration strikes.
01:26:17Making progress, Mom.
01:26:18Oh, I don't want
01:26:19to jinx it, so.
01:26:20No, absolutely not.
01:26:22Have you given
01:26:22my question
01:26:23any more thought?
01:26:24The Do I Want to Move Home
01:26:25question?
01:26:26I have,
01:26:27and definitely not.
01:26:28Business is picking up.
01:26:29Oh, my book signing
01:26:30appeal, perhaps?
01:26:31Hannah's ad.
01:26:32We're rolling in
01:26:33plant parents
01:26:34and garden nomies
01:26:35or whatever she called them.
01:26:36She's more than earned her race.
01:26:37And your boyfriend
01:26:38has brought a very nice
01:26:39bottle of wine with him.
01:26:40He's not my boyfriend.
01:26:41He's just an old college friend.
01:26:43Sure, Mom.
01:26:44Funny, though,
01:26:45Zach did mention
01:26:46that you haven't been home
01:26:47most nights
01:26:47when he goes to bed,
01:26:48even when he's out
01:26:49late with Margo.
01:26:50Hmm.
01:26:51Well,
01:26:52your brother and I
01:26:53are going to need
01:26:54to have a little chat
01:26:54about what percentage
01:26:56of my royalties
01:26:57he can expect to inherit
01:26:58if he can't learn
01:26:59to keep his mouth shut.
01:27:02Can you get that?
01:27:03I need to have a little chat
01:27:04with your brother.
01:27:07So,
01:27:08don't tell my girlfriend
01:27:18that I want to see
01:27:19the other plant shop
01:27:19in town.
01:27:20Your girlfriend
01:27:20will forgive you
01:27:21this time.
01:27:22Good.
01:27:27Hmm.
01:27:28How are things
01:27:28going with your mom?
01:27:29She's trying.
01:27:30I'm trying.
01:27:31We're all just...
01:27:32blooming where you're planted.
01:27:36Oh.
01:27:38Zach is never
01:27:39going to let that down,
01:27:39is he?
01:27:40No, never.
01:27:41Oh, I love it.
01:27:44Um, excuse me.
01:27:46Hi, ladies.
01:27:47Sorry to interrupt.
01:27:48Is this Amelia Bloom's house?
01:27:51Is she on some
01:27:52map of the stars
01:27:53or something?
01:27:54Does Penfield
01:27:54have a map of the stars?
01:27:56Oh, I thought
01:27:57that was you.
01:27:58There she is.
01:27:59Oh, ladies,
01:28:00this is not some crazed fan.
01:28:01This is my editor, Graham.
01:28:03I'm so glad
01:28:03you couldn't make it.
01:28:05Well, my best-selling author
01:28:06promised me a new book.
01:28:07Yes, yes.
01:28:08How's it going?
01:28:08It's coming.
01:28:09It's coming.
01:28:10And I am doing
01:28:11something different.
01:28:11I'm going to tell you
01:28:12all about it after dinner.
01:28:13This is about to get
01:28:14really interesting.
01:28:15Why is that?
01:28:16He is totally
01:28:17Max's type.
01:28:19Oh, really?
01:28:19Yeah.
01:28:20Then we should go
01:28:21get good seats.
01:28:23Let's see.
01:28:23Everybody, come.
01:28:28I should not
01:28:30move around
01:28:31because I'm
01:28:32just going to
01:28:32cheer on the floor.
01:28:33Yeah.
01:28:34I'm still on fire.
