Misthaufen – Wer haglich ist, bleibt üba (1975) (Austria-Krautrock)
MISTHAUFEN always occupied an outsider and protest role—albeit a not inconsiderable one—in the local Viennese scene of the 1970s, with songs like "Gammlerlied" and "Plutonium," but also genuine hits like "Schabernack" and "Im Park is schee."
Founded in the late 1960s, the group, centered around the later political activist, "Stadtfest" (city festival) founder, and "Metropol" club owner Alf Krauliz and the congenial composer and singer Arthur Lauber, initially attracted attention with their rather critically lyrical, chanson-influenced performances and releases. These included an interpretation of F.J. Degenhardt's "Die Schmuddelkinder" (The Dirty Children)—a song that was played, for example, on the Ö3 radio station's "Musicbox." Ultimately, Misthaufen demonstrated visionary thinking on several LPs (“An die Konsumenten-Generation”), but also embraced the dialect-influenced Austropop wave (“Fucking in Hütteldorf-Hacking”). Their antics even spawned a musical at the Arena.
“Wer haglich is, bleibt üba!” (He Who Is Happy Stays Over!), released on CBS in 1975, is considered Misthaufen's masterpiece. The band broke up in 1977 after the album “Hart aber ungerecht” (Hard But Unfair); almost four decades later, Alf Krauliz was the driving force behind a reissue of the LP and a special Misthaufen memorial event (release show on March 24, 2015, at the Vienna Radio Culture House).
