Earth Opera — Earth Opera 1968 (USA, Psychedelic, Folk Rock)
An American rock band formed in 1967 in Boston. In the late 1960s, the band attempted to achieve success in the rock scene by drawing on traditional American country and bluegrass music, while everyone around them was playing hard rock or psychedelia. The buzz surrounding the "Boston sound" helped them secure a contract with Elektra and quickly record their self-titled debut album, which was released in March 1968. The album featured a large portion of the material written by Peter Rowan and was a blend of folk, jazz, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll, skiffle, and classical music. With this album, Earth Opera, in a sense, anticipated the emergence of Los Angeles "adult rock," which would be successfully developed in the following decade by James Taylor and Joni Mitchell.
