00:00Hello, everyone, and welcome. My name is Dr. Marie Mathieu Kaye from Unified Consulting Solutions.
00:05You know, in our work, we found that the biggest wins, the real breakthroughs,
00:09happen when you can simplify complexity. And today, we're going to do exactly that.
00:14We're going to tackle a tool that can fundamentally change the way you see your projects.
00:19So let's dive right in. Today's topic is a powerful tool called Value Stream Mapping,
00:24or VSM for short. It's a method that's going to help you see your projects,
00:28especially in architecture, engineering, and construction, in a completely new and honestly,
00:33a much clearer light. Now, let's start with a number that might just shock you.
00:39Industry analysis shows that a staggering 57% of the time spent on a typical AEC project adds
00:45absolutely zero value to the customer. Just think about that for a second. More than half the time
00:50is essentially waste. And that, my friends, is the huge problem we're here to talk about today.
00:54Here's our game plan for how we'll get there. We're going to start by really understanding
00:59the problem, this hidden drain on our projects. Then, we'll talk about a common trap we all fall
01:05into. After that, I'll introduce Value Stream Mapping as the solution, show you how it makes
01:11waste visible, and why it's your best first step forward. And by the time we're done here,
01:16you'll be able to see waste in a whole new way, you'll know exactly what VSM is, and you'll understand
01:20why it's the absolute best place to start improving your projects. Sound good? Okay, let's get into it.
01:27All right, section one, the hidden drain on projects. This is all about the frustrating reality
01:33that, let's be honest, so many of us face every single day. I'm sure this list looks, well, pretty
01:40familiar, right? Cost overruns, delays, that feeling of doing the same work over and over. These are the
01:46pains we feel constantly. But what if I told you these aren't a bunch of separate problems? What if
01:51they're all just symptoms of one, single, much deeper issue? A broken flow of work. And the cost
01:58of this is immense. Just take one of those symptoms, rework. Studies show that up to 40% of all rework
02:04comes directly from poor communication that's a problem in the flow of information. That is just a
02:09staggering amount of wasted time, wasted material, and wasted money. This brings us to a very common trap.
02:16When we try to fix these problems, we often take a microscopic view. We focus on making one single
02:23task a little bit better. We're so busy looking at one tree that we completely miss the entire forest.
02:30This chart here really lays it out perfectly. You see, we have different tools for different levels of
02:35detail. Down at the bottom, a spaghetti diagram can track how people move around. In the middle, process mapping
02:41looks at the steps within one single task, our single tree. But way up at the top, at the strategic
02:46level, that's where value stream mapping lives. It gives us that view of the entire journey, the whole
02:52forest. And this really makes you ask a critical question, doesn't it? What if all that effort we put
02:58into fixing one little task, what if it's just like polishing a single link on a very long, very rusty
03:04chain? The chain is still broken. The system still doesn't work, no matter how shiny that one link
03:09is. And this right here is where VSM comes in to save the day. So let's jump into section three and
03:17really introduce value stream mapping. I like to call it the strategic satellite view. It's the tool
03:24that lets us zoom way out and finally see the entire chain from start to finish. So what is VSM really?
03:33Put simply, it's a tool to visualize every single critical step in your process. And here's the key
03:38part. It maps the flow of both materials and information, all the way from the very beginning
03:44to the very end. It's not about how long one task takes, it's about the total time for the entire
03:49project. Let's put this right next to process mapping to make it crystal clear. You see, process mapping
03:55focuses on a single task, and it asks a good question, are we doing this thing right? But VSM looks at the
04:01whole system and asks a much, much more powerful question, are we even doing the right things in the
04:07first place? Its real goal is to find the waste that's hiding between the steps, in the handoffs, because
04:13that's where the biggest delays are. So let's build on that in section four. Once we take that satellite view,
04:20what does it actually show us? Well, it makes all the invisible waste in our projects finally visible.
04:26But first, we need to agree on what waste even is. In lean thinking, the definition is brutally simple.
04:34Waste is any activity at all that uses up resources, your time, your money, your team's effort, but creates
04:40zero value for the person who matters most, the customer. Now, VSM is basically designed to be a heat-seeking
04:47missile for these eight classic forms of waste. And while they're all bad, VSM is uniquely powerful at
04:54uncovering the waste that happens between our tasks. I'm talking about things like waiting, you know,
04:59waiting for an answer, waiting for another crew to finish, or excess inventory piling up. These are
05:04the invisible killers of our project's flow. So this is the crucial point. Seeing all this waste isn't the
05:11end goal. Not at all. It's just the beginning. And that brings us to section five, using VSM as your
05:17strategic first step to go from just seeing waste to actually creating predictable flow.
05:23The path forward is actually beautifully simple. It's a three-step process. Step one, see the system.
05:29You use VSM to map out your current reality, warts and all. Step two, design the future. Your whole team
05:36gets together and designs a future state map, a vision for a much better process. And finally, step three,
05:42create flow. You create a plan and you implement it to make that better future a reality. Now,
05:48this can all feel a little daunting, I know, but there's a great saying in the lean community that
05:52I love. It's easier to act your way into a new way of thinking than to think your way into a new way
05:58of acting. VSM isn't about creating a perfect plan from day one. It's about giving you a starting point
06:03for action. And that first step is what changes everything. Okay, let's wrap this up and put it all
06:09together in our final section. A quick summary of what we've covered and where you can go from here.
06:15So what are the big takeaways? First, our projects are filled with a ton of hidden waste, as much as
06:2057%. Second, the biggest problems aren't in our tasks, they're in the handoffs between them. Third,
06:26value stream mapping gives us that crucial satellite view to finally see this waste. And that makes VSM
06:31the foundational first step to building truly predictable, efficient projects. We started with a set of
06:37learning objectives. And look at that mission accomplished. You can now see waste not just
06:41inside of tasks, but between them. You know what VSM is, you know how it works. And most importantly,
06:47you know why it is the most powerful first step you can take on your journey.
06:51So I'll leave you with a question to think about. If you could get that satellite view of your current
06:57project right now, today, what's the first hidden source of waste? That waiting, that rework,
07:02that extra inventory, what do you think you'd find? It's definitely something worth considering.
07:08And if you're excited by this and want to go deeper, definitely check out the Lean Construction
07:12Institute for some great resources. The book Lean Thinking is really the Bible on this whole
07:17philosophy. And if you're looking for a practical next step after VSM, you have to look into the last
07:23planner system. Thank you so much for your time today. I'm Dr. Marmothu Key. If you want to continue
07:29this conversation and learn more, I'd like to personally invite you to join our professional
