00:00It's been one of the most closely watched court cases in the Bay Area in decades.
00:04The first full day of jury deliberations have wrapped in the Theranos fraud trial in San Jose.
00:10And that's where our business and tech reporter Scott Budiman joins us live.
00:13And Scott, we got so used to seeing Elizabeth Holmes walking into court to start the day, but that didn't happen today, right?
00:20No, it did not. You're right, Terry. No Elizabeth Holmes in the courtroom.
00:23Instead, she, like the rest of us, waiting for word from the court to come down that the jury has reached a verdict in the case.
00:31But after day one of deliberations, that didn't happen.
00:36It's a case that quickly became Silicon Valley's personal soap opera.
00:41And after three and a half months of testimony, detailed cross-examinations, and the text messages read around the world,
00:49the fate of Elizabeth Holmes is now in the hands of a jury.
00:53Today, the jury has to pick a four-person.
00:57That was step one. They began deliberating at about 8.45 this morning.
01:02They have 11 counts of wire fraud to go through, so 11 jury verdict forms to read through,
01:09and I'm sure they're going to have questions among them, and they may want to look at some pieces of the evidence.
01:14So it's a process they're just getting started on.
01:17Holmes, who started Theranos at age 19 in 2003, is facing nine counts of fraud and two counts of conspiracy,
01:26accused of knowingly lying to investors about Theranos blood testing machines, which did not work,
01:33while bringing in hundreds of millions of investment dollars from the likes of Henry Kissinger,
01:38Rupert Murdoch, Betsy DeVos, and many others.
01:42I'm sure they're methodically going through count one, count two, count three, so it's going to take some time.
01:48The jury has both a lot of material in front of them, along with testimony from Holmes herself.
01:55The question, which version of the story do they believe?
01:59Now, as of right now, the jury is set to resume deliberating tomorrow, and then again on Thursday.
02:07If we don't have a verdict as of Thursday night, the judge says he will give the jury the choice
02:13whether to come back and continue deliberations the week after Christmas or to come back the week after New Year's.
02:20We'll keep you posted.
