00:00A former Silicon Valley superstar who talked her way into hundreds of millions of dollars
00:08in funding is now trying to talk her way out of up to 20 years in prison. Theranos founder
00:14Elizabeth Holmes spent yesterday under cross-examination in her criminal fraud trial.
00:18She is charged with misleading patients and investors about her firm's blood testing
00:23technology, but she says she is not the real villain here. In very tearful testimony this
00:28week, Holmes accused her former boyfriend and business partner, that's Sunny Balawani, of
00:32physical and psychological abuse. She also testified that she was raped when she was a
00:38student at Stanford, an experience she says Balawani used to control her. Jamie Ucas has more on the
00:43story. A day after Elizabeth Holmes accused former longtime boyfriend and business partner Sunny
00:50Balawani of abusing and controlling her, federal prosecutors had the 37-year-old read text messages
00:56they say showed the couple was in love. You are God's tigress and warrior. You are extraordinary,
01:02Balawani said in one text. Holmes responded, coming from my tiger means the whole universe to me.
01:08Prosecutors have said, you know, they have over 12,000 texts and a lot of these texts are
01:14uplifting. The pet names are definitely something that stand out for me. Reporter Emily Saul has been
01:19covering the trial from the beginning, working on the podcast Bad Blood, the final chapter.
01:24Alongside former Wall Street Journal reporter John Carreyrou. Carreyrou wrote a series of articles
01:30back in 2015 and 2016 that exposed serious flaws within Theranos, eventually leading to the company's
01:37collapse. Do you feel now, in hindsight, that maybe you went to market a little too quickly?
01:43We're the exact same company that we were last Wednesday before these two articles were published.
01:48Nothing has changed. Just because some guy reports false stuff about us doesn't mean that
01:53it changes our business. Tuesday, Holmes denied hiring a research firm to look into Carreyrou,
01:58but admitted to trying to kill the story, calling her company's handling of it a disaster.
02:03We really messed up, she said. Did it seem that Ms. Holmes expressed regret?
02:07She did, definitely. Regret has been a big part of her case in chief, of her defense.
02:14For the larger things she's addressing, her response is much more nuanced. It's that she doesn't
02:18remember, or she thought that at the time she was making those statements, she didn't realize
02:23that they were misrepresentations. For CBS Mornings, Jamie Ucas, Los Angeles.
02:29Sonny Balwani has been also charged in this case. He will be tried separately. He has pleaded not guilty,
02:34and he denies all allegations against him. We're going to keep our eyes on this one.
