00:00High noon! Thanksgiving Eve! Jones and Keith here on WEI. It is time for Pure Hoops with Justin Turpin of WEI. You know him as Turp. What's going on, Turp?
00:13What's up, guys? 5 o'clock start today. A little weird. Yeah, early start. Very strange. What's up with that? On a weekday.
00:18Over at the Garden, yeah. Well, you know, Thanksgiving Eve, people want to get out there and get in the game early.
00:23I was just mentioning this to Turp off the air, not to steer out of any Celtics talk to get started here, but our trade deadline just passed in our Fantasy Football League, Keith.
00:33Came and went, huh? And the only trade that happened in our league, did you make a trade and sneak it out of the wire?
00:40No, I didn't realize. I didn't realize. The only trade that went down in our league? Me and Turp.
00:46That was a big one. Pat's defense for Harold Finan Jr., I believe. Blockbuster. It was symbiotic, though.
00:51Everyone made out in that trade. Well, it really helped no one, but yeah, we were at least aggressive owners.
00:57By the way, if you're looking at the standings, I think Turp and Keefer kind of battling it out for one spot in the postseason.
01:04Yeah, my team fell off a cliff in this thing, but I'm still hanging around.
01:08We've got a good division on our side. Yeah, we do. We might have five playoff teams.
01:11Turp's in a very weak division. That division winner is probably going to be the only team that gets in on that side.
01:16Are we head-to-head this week? Is that what you said? No, I'm just saying you're battling for a playoff spot.
01:19I might not have a quarterback this week. Well, I would get one of those.
01:21Yeah, I've got to go out and get one. I would get a cue. I would add one.
01:24It seemed like there was some good news with him, though, that he might play this weekend, so hopefully he does.
01:29Well, there's nobody left, Turp. Yeah, no, it's a cesspool in there.
01:32Well, see, I didn't realize the trade deadline this week.
01:34Is Josh Jacobs playing, or did Turp completely—
01:37Jacobs is practicing. I think Jacobs is going to play.
01:39I lost his role, though. Well, that was good.
01:42I'm only kidding. I'm playing Billy this week.
01:45Oh, nice. Big, big, big showdown.
01:48That's kind of an elimination game, actually, is what that is.
01:50I think you're right. Loser of that's kind of knocked out, I think.
01:52Yeah, loser's done. So there's a lot there.
01:54While we're here, Turp, and you killed Josh Jacobs,
01:56Jackson was picking this week in your place in the Bozal Pest.
02:00He's done a hell of a job, huh?
02:00Well, so this—
02:01He's out.
02:02You maybe just answered my question.
02:03You're rooting against them, right?
02:05Yeah, of course I am.
02:05Okay.
02:06I want my spot back.
02:07So, like, Dice—
02:07It's going to be a while.
02:08Well, you shouldn't announce who Dice has yet, but Dice is in this week.
02:10Dice is in this week.
02:11You're adamantly rooting against Dice.
02:12Yeah, he's been 0 for 2 the last two weeks, right?
02:15I'm keeping tabs.
02:15No, it's not true.
02:16No, no, no.
02:17Dice missed this past week on whoever he submitted.
02:19Yoshivas.
02:19Yoshivas.
02:20I think he did hit—
02:21Yoshivas.
02:21I think he hit two weeks ago on CD, I think.
02:23Yeah, maybe.
02:23Yeah, I think he did.
02:24He wasn't officially in, though.
02:25That wasn't—
02:25I've learned my lesson.
02:26I'm going to be—
02:27I'm going to come back with some vengeance here whenever I get my shot again.
02:30We'll see.
02:30I like it.
02:30All right, so Terp has learned his lesson.
02:32Have the Celtics learned their lesson through the first whatever it is, 15 games,
02:35or whatever it is, more than that, I guess?
02:37Have they figured out not to take teams lightly like the Brooklyn Nets?
02:41I'm still annoyed by that loss the other night.
02:43Yeah, we're about to find out what the stretch they're going on.
02:45I mean, this is really going to tell what this team is.
02:48Like, look, even starting tonight, Detroit coming in on a 13-game win streak.
02:51They're 15-2.
02:52You've got Minnesota, Cleveland, like all 10-win teams coming up here along the top of their conferences.
02:58So this is where you're really going to find out what this team is.
03:01And to the Brooklyn point, to that game, like, we talked about it after the Utah game,
03:06where with this team, the one thing you thought you'd be able to expect each and every night
03:09is the effort and that they weren't going to get punked in games like that, that they should win.
03:14And, like, they're not in a position where they can give up wins,
03:16which makes it a little bit even more frustrating.
03:18So, yeah, that Brooklyn game was really annoying.
03:22Yeah, it was frustrating.
03:23And because they're in a spot where I think it's very clear the bottom five or six teams in the NBA
03:28are just atrocious.
03:30Yeah, you're not going to have to.
03:30Unfortunately, one of those teams was Brooklyn, which you lost to.
03:32But even still, we were talking about, I mean, how many wins total is Washington going to have
03:38when it's all said and done?
03:39I mean, they might have to claw to get – they might be one of these teams that we look back on
03:42and they have, like, 10 wins at the end of the year.
03:44Oh, yeah.
03:45So they're just some atrocious teams.
03:47There's still, like, a bit of a logjam there between, what, 3C down to, like, the 10C.
03:53Like, it's – you know, it's early.
03:54There's 17 games into the season.
03:56But, you know, one team goes on a little bit of a hot streak.
03:59They could be the 3C.
04:00But on the same token, one team goes on a little bit of a skid.
04:03They're out.
04:03To that point, like, if you beat Utah, you beat Brooklyn,
04:06and one of those Philly games goes your way – and they were in both of those games.
04:09They went down to crunch time.
04:10A couple of these games go your way.
04:12You're talking about this team being the third team in the East,
04:14which everyone would be happy with.
04:16Now, I don't think people would expect them to stay there
04:18just because eventually other teams are going to start finding their stride.
04:22The Orlandos, the New Yorks, like, those teams are going to start figuring it out.
04:25But if you're sitting here and this team's sitting at the third seed going into December,
04:30you feel pretty good, and you feel like they'd be exceeding expectations.
04:34And it's been right there for them, which makes it even more frustrating
04:37because it's teams that they should be beating.
04:39And a couple of those clutch games go their way.
04:41It's a lot different.
04:43Good contrast in styles tonight at TD Garden.
04:47Early start.
04:47Turb will be there.
04:48Celtics are down to third in the NBA in three-point attempts, 42.9.
04:53So they trail Golden State and Cleveland in three-point attempts.
04:56Detroit is third from the bottom.
04:58The only teams that shoot less threes than them, Houston and Sacramento.
05:03How do you think that plays out?
05:04I mean, people might hate this,
05:05but I think the way that you stay into this game tonight is just bomb away.
05:08Like, try to beat them from the three-point line
05:10because you're not going to win the margins against this team,
05:13especially without Namiya Shkata.
05:14And you can't overstate how good he's been for them this year.
05:17I mean, they're a plus 124 with him on the floor.
05:20That's a team best.
05:21A minus 45 with him off, a team worse.
05:23Like, he has been phenomenal for them this year.
05:26And I think of all the positive developments,
05:28and there have been quite a few individual developments for this team,
05:32he's going to be near the top of the list in how impactful he's been.
05:35Like, he looks like a guy who can contribute to the next iteration of this team.
05:39So you can't overstate how important it is with not having him tonight.
05:42So do you lean in and go really small?
05:45Do you start a guy like Sam Hauser and just jack up 53s
05:47and hope 36% of them go, you shoot 36% or whatever,
05:51and try to out-shoot them?
05:53That's probably the way to do it.
05:54Hope is the right word, though, because that is what it would be.
05:56You're hoping, you're not, it's not really much of a game play.
05:58You're hoping you shoot like 36%.
05:59Right.
06:00Because just look at the size.
06:01You just do not have the size.
06:03And Jalen Duren's been a monster this year.
06:05I know, Jones, we were talking about it before the show.
06:07Like, you already got those rebound bets in.
06:09I locked in my Duren rebound overs very early in the day.
06:12Because of walking double-doubles.
06:14So I think that probably is the best way to do it.
06:16Because, again, you're not going to beat this team in the margins tonight.
06:18They're a top-ten rebounding team.
06:20The Celtics, they've been better as of late, but aren't a great rebounding team.
06:23So I think that might be the best way to do it.
06:25Just try to go mega-small and try to shoot your way into the game.
06:28You know, last year, I liked Detroit a lot.
06:32They were one of the surprise teams.
06:33They lost in the first round.
06:34I thought they were going to win that series, and they didn't.
06:36Cade Cunningham looks like an all-NBA player again.
06:40I'm curious, are they a real title contender?
06:42They're rolling right now.
06:44But do you look at the Pistons as a team that could be in the NBA Finals?
06:46Can I give you a stat of the week now to be here?
06:48Please do.
06:49So they've had...
06:50Go ahead.
06:51They have two...
06:52So they have...
06:53In franchise history, they've had two 13-game win streaks.
06:56Both of them have resulted in NBA Finals.
06:58Really?
06:58So, tonight, they're entering the Garden on a 13-game win streak.
07:02Wow.
07:02They've set a franchise record, and yeah, I absolutely think so.
07:05Now, whatever team comes out of the West is going to be really hard for this team to overcome,
07:10whether that be Oklahoma City, far and away, looks like the best team in the league.
07:14But any other team, Denver, Houston, any of those teams would be the favorite.
07:18But you look at the Eastern Conference, why can't they compete?
07:21They definitely can, because you would think, all right, no Tatum, no Halliburton for the season.
07:25So that should be...
07:26It's pretty wide open.
07:27And you're thinking, all right, that should be the year for the Knicks.
07:30Yes, that should be the year for Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs.
07:33But it's like, as of this point, Detroit has far and away taken the most advantage of it.
07:37It's crazy, too.
07:38Like, think about it.
07:39They set an NBA record for the longest losing streak in league history two years ago, walking into the Garden.
07:45They said it at TV Garden.
07:46And it's funny, because they sent, like, the Celtics the overtime that night.
07:50Two years ago, they won 14 games.
07:53Yeah.
07:53They won, they've already won 15 this year before Thanksgiving.
07:57It is a wild turnaround.
07:58And, like, that team's got a ton of talent.
08:00So I don't see why they couldn't compete in the Eastern Conference.
08:02Again, we've been talking about it since the summer, just how wide open it is.
08:05And, I mean, they look, like, absolutely like a team that can come out on top of it.
08:10617-779-7937.
08:12You got Celtics questions for Terp.
08:13You can jump in and ask them.
08:15But we have to do this first.
08:17Did you ever think that maybe there's more to life than being really, really, really ridiculously good-looking?
08:23It's Jones and Keeve, Fashion Police.
08:27All right, now, if you're watching on twitch.tv slash bostonweei, the Twitch chat is ablaze on Terp's outfit.
08:33Kevin suggested.
08:35Wait, what's with Terp's outfit?
08:36Kevin suggested that we need to fashion police Terp's outfit.
08:40Looks like he just got off the golf course.
08:41Terp's wearing a white hat.
08:42Go him right to the game.
08:43Is it a white jumpsuit?
08:45What are you wearing?
08:45No, not a jumpsuit.
08:46Well, that's what it looks like, though.
08:48It looks like.
08:49That's a.
08:49Was that a Callaway golf?
08:50Yeah.
08:51It's a golf pullover.
08:52Somebody on Twitch said he looks like LL Cool J with his outfit.
08:55Would you take it?
08:56That's a tough light.
08:57That seat is a tough light.
08:59Yeah.
08:59You get kind of like.
09:00A tree behind me?
09:01You got a nice festive tree behind you, which looks great.
09:03Okay.
09:04But so people want us to fashion police Terp's.
09:06He is glowing.
09:07It's like God is on the middle of the screen.
09:08That's true.
09:09So it's a white hat and a white pullover.
09:11What kind of pants are you wearing?
09:12I got black pants on.
09:13Black pair of pants.
09:14Nice.
09:15Nice.
09:15How tight.
09:16So how would I.
09:17How would I fashion police this?
09:2270.
09:2370.
09:2377.
09:24Yeah.
09:24We'll see what's wrong with that.
09:2677.
09:26That might be the highest score I've ever had.
09:28That's not a bad grade.
09:29That's not a bad grade.
09:30What's your grade?
09:3162.
09:32That's great.
09:34What's wrong with that?
09:34It's above 50.
09:35Twitch is getting into like only fans territory, but Twitch wants you to stand up.
09:38If you can stand up for the Twitch chat.
09:40Yeah.
09:40Why does.
09:42Yeah, that's good.
09:43I good.
09:44Yeah.
09:44They like that.
09:44I like that.
09:46That's great.
09:47Don't know is left and right.
09:48You're getting donations like you read about right now.
09:51Send those bits in like 10 cents.
09:54Yeah.
09:54The different subscriber things.
09:56Yeah.
09:56Different tiers.
09:57Yeah.
09:57Different tier levels.
09:58Terp will send you a happy Thanksgiving card if you submit a hundred bucks.
10:01I can do that.
10:02He'll give you a worn white Nike hat.
10:03I can do that.
10:04He'll build a Costanza.
10:05Just black socks.
10:07He photoshopped onto a turkey.
10:08He'll do that for you.
10:10Whatever it takes.
10:11All right.
10:11So I went 77.
10:12You went?
10:13Ah, 62.
10:14Okay, good.
10:15That's a good.
10:15Again, like the highest scores I might have ever had here.
10:17I usually go with like a Bass Pro.
10:18I'm like still filling out this application, by the way.
10:20Yeah.
10:20No, I keep it chipping away at it.
10:21The trader's application was like one page.
10:23Every time you click submit, it goes to another page.
10:26This is like the rest of my day.
10:28You've lost me.
10:29Between that and figuring out the dog tiers yesterday, the breaks have been very busy around here.
10:33Oh, my God.
10:34Okay, let's go to Matt in Rhode Island.
10:36It has a Celtics question for Terp.
10:37Go ahead, Matt.
10:38I know you guys were talking about the Brooklyn game yesterday, and I agree.
10:42That loss is worth five.
10:43I mean, playing that team on a back-to-back and not a big NBA cup guy, but you did have something
10:48to play for.
10:49You're favored by 14 and you lose by 12.
10:52But my question to Terp is recently with Jalen Brown saying what he said.
10:57I mean, if Jalen Brown decides, you know, if he gets hurt or anything happens, like we're
11:03Brooklyn without Jalen Brown.
11:04So I don't understand why they had to rid the whole team and give him nothing to play
11:08with.
11:08Yeah, so we've not talked about these comments, Keith, but the T-Mac ones.
11:11Yeah, he said basically he was, I guess, venting to Tracy McGrady.
11:15McGrady's like, dude, do whatever you can to stay in Boston.
11:18But Jalen was thinking about leaving.
11:19Your thoughts on that story?
11:20Yeah, I think it is interesting.
11:21And I kind of go a different direction with it and look at it.
11:24It's like, are we looking at this season kind of in the wrong way where we were talking
11:28about how Jalen wants the chance to be the number one, wants a chance to prove himself?
11:32And maybe that's not the case.
11:34Maybe it is winning that fuels him.
11:36And if he's taking that advice the way he seems like he is, the way he was talking about it,
11:40that seems to be the case where he's not necessarily motivated by the personal accolades and the
11:46personal success.
11:47Like, he wants to win.
11:48You know, those comments were pretty enlightening because, you know, it's been speculated before.
11:52It's like, oh, Jalen was unhappy.
11:53But he's never really explicitly said it.
11:55And that was the first time he kind of hinted that this was a thought at one point.
11:59So, I go a different direction, like I said.
12:01Like, maybe he's not motivated by that.
12:04Maybe it is winning.
12:04That is his number one priority.
12:06It's kind of funny to me, though, where you think about there might be five players in the league
12:10that are actually happy.
12:11Like, when you really think about it, like, Kevin Durant hates everything.
12:14Now, this year seems to be kind of clicking for him.
12:17But for a guy that, like, for now, he's happy.
12:20He's probably happy at the start of Brooklyn.
12:21He'll be on Twitter defending himself, calling out coaches.
12:24But, like, that's the guy who's one of the best players of this generation, and he has
12:27to go to fake Twitter accounts to defend himself.
12:30People make fun of his rings, being like, those don't even count.
12:33So, it's like, guys are either on good teams, but they don't have the perfect role.
12:37LeBron moves around constantly.
12:38He's got to move all over the place.
12:39I would say Curry.
12:40I was going to say Steph is happy.
12:42I would say Curry's pretty happy because he gets the credit that he deserves.
12:44Giannis isn't.
12:46Jokic doesn't even like basketball.
12:47Great point.
12:48I don't think.
12:48Yeah, he's not happy.
12:49Great point.
12:49I'd say Tatum is.
12:50You think Tatum's pretty happy?
12:51I would actually agree with that.
12:53Yeah, but I think because there's very few guys that have won a title on the team that
12:56drafted them, and they're still there, and they are viewed as the best player because
13:00I need to go home.
13:01Because everybody outside of Curry, it's like, well, you have Curry, and then that's what
13:04we're talking about with Brown.
13:05It's like, well, Tatum's the guy.
13:06This is not normally my side of the street, but on Tatum.
13:09I've actually been pretty impressed that he's gone on all the road trips and done all,
13:12because I didn't think he really needed to.
13:14I didn't.
13:15But he's been there all the time.
13:16I didn't think he needed to.
13:16I didn't think he would want to.
13:17I didn't think he would care enough.
13:18I think that would be evidence of, he is a guy who is happy and cares and is super invested,
13:24and I thought he would be committed to getting back on the floor.
13:27He always plays.
13:28I guess his investment level, I just didn't think went this far.
13:32He's supporting the team on the road while he's hurt.
13:35I'll give him credit for that.
13:36I didn't think he would do that.
13:37I didn't think he needed to do it.
13:38And that's honestly impressed me.
13:40Yeah, and the players have talked about it as well.
13:41Jordan Walsh described him as a player, a coach, a hype man, a mentor.
13:46Like, he's doing a great job with the younger guys, and you can see it because he goes up
13:49to them on the sideline, and Ugo Gonzalez is a perfect example.
13:52He came out, this was actually Friday against Brooklyn.
13:54He came out of the game, and Jason Tatum went right over to him during a timeout and was
13:58just coaching him up.
13:58Like, he's done a great job just being there when he obviously can't impact on the floor,
14:03doing what he can to help them off the floor.
14:05And, you know, that's a guy who's, especially with a team with so many younger players, like
14:08Ugo, Jordan Walsh, Josh Minot, Luka Garza even.
14:12Like, there's just so many younger players that are, like, inexperienced.
14:15You have an all-NBA player at your disposal, a perennial MVP candidate, there to give you
14:20advice and just share what he's seeing.
14:22Like, you can't overstate the importance of that.
14:24Okay.
14:25Well, Terp, you got the Celtics tonight?
14:27Yes, sir.
14:27Oh, no.
14:28Do I have?
14:28Are you picking them?
14:29Yes.
14:30I don't think I'm picking them.
14:31No.
14:31Which is crazy.
14:32What is the line?
14:34Two and a half.
14:34Oh, Celtics are two and a half point dogs.
14:36Oh, this is an NBA Cup game, too, so the court's going to be all wild.
14:38Yeah, they're kind of out on the NBA Cup, though.
14:40Yeah, that Brooklyn Walsh was a costly one.
14:42Play spoiler, maybe, as Matt said.
14:44Say it again.
14:44This being a two and a half point line is crazy to me.
14:47Like, Detroit has been incredible.
14:49So what does Vegas know?
14:51Something's fishy.
14:52What do they know?
14:53Something is fishy.
14:54How high would you go on the Durant rebounds tonight?
14:56I locked it in at-
14:57Twelve and a half.
14:58I locked it in at 16 one place.
15:0016?
15:00I did.
15:01He had 60.
15:02What's the number?
15:03He had 18 against something earlier this year.
15:05He averages 11 and a half.
15:06Yeah.
15:07Yeah, he's a machine.
15:07And they don't have a center tonight.
15:09Like I said, they can't-
15:10No Kata.
15:11They can't rebound even with Kata.
15:12But if they make every shot, there will be no boards.
15:13He had 18 earlier this year against them.
15:16I locked it in shots.
15:16We were also saying that we hope they shoot 36% from three.
15:20That means you're missing 64% of your shots.
15:22That's a lot of boards to grab.
15:24That's a lot of rebounds available there.
15:25So I'd be all over the Durant props.
15:27Okay, Durant props, and he has mixed in there.
15:29I don't know if you heard it.
15:30He's got the Pistons tonight.
15:32Yeah.
15:32What does Vegas know?
15:34617-779-7937.
15:36You can jump in here on Jones & Keeve.
15:38Pure Hoops with Terp every Wednesday at high noon.
15:41Terp, excellent stuff.
15:42Enjoy the garden.
15:43Happy Thanksgiving.
15:44And we'll talk to you next week.
