We sit down with Kimbra after her Coachella performance and discuss her new album, collabs, and influences.

00:00We're at the Artist and Guest Lounge in Coachella.

00:02This is backstage where all the artists hang out.

00:04Yep, and yesterday we interviewed Kimbra,

00:06so we're going to show you that right now.

00:15Now we caught some of your set,

00:17and I love your energy on stage.

00:19And you're captivating to watch.

00:20So I was wondering if you had any influences,

00:22especially with performing.

00:24Growing up, I loved R&B music,

00:27and I think in studio,

00:28I take a lot from the arrangements

00:30of a lot of those kinds of artists,

00:32but live, you know,

00:35I would go to hardcore metal shows in my team in years.

00:38I loved the Mars Bolter.

00:39I loved at the Drive-In as well.

00:41I loved Interpol, actually.

00:43Some of the heavier bands.

00:44I feel like when I used to watch those shows,

00:46I was like, man, even though the music I write

00:48is like pop music and fun and feminine and playful,

00:52how can I bring that energy of the classical,

00:54the kind of energy of just that, like, oh.

00:57I wanted to talk to you first about your new album,

00:59and what was it like going into that,

01:02off the success with Goatia,

01:04to really get your chance to bring your music

01:06to a whole new audience?

01:07Yeah, I was definitely ready

01:09to write an album after all of that,

01:11but I needed to find some stillness.

01:13I moved into a farm.

01:14I moved into a farm in Silver Lake.

01:16Really?

01:16Eight sheep and 20 chickens.

01:19That existed.

01:19Oh, my gosh.

01:20Mr. Crowing and wrote my album there,

01:23so it was a trip.

01:25It was the first record I had a real hands on,

01:27production-wise.

01:29Who was one of your favorite collabs?

01:30I was a huge fan of Silver Chair growing up,

01:32being from New Zealand.

01:33Working with Daniel Johns was pretty special.

01:36Such crushing him.

01:39Who would be your dream collab?

01:41Maybe like Ruthless Wainwright.

01:42I love his voice so much.

01:44Yeah.

01:44I always have this vision

01:45of us doing a power duet together.
