French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s 28-point peace proposal for Ukraine, calling it “an initiative that goes in the right direction.” But Macron also issued a strong caveat: parts of the plan, as it stands, must be renegotiated. He emphasized that while he supports peace, it must not come at the cost of Ukraine’s sovereignty or amount to a capitulation. Macron said only Ukrainians should decide on territorial concessions, criticized limits on Ukraine’s military capacity, and argued that Europe — not Washington — should control Russia’s frozen assets. He also floated the idea of a “reassurance force” made up of British, French, and Turkish troops that would operate post-war, away from the front line. Around 20 countries have reportedly expressed willingness to contribute. This remains a developing story in the complex geopolitics of Europe and U.S.-Russia diplomacy.
