00:00French President Emmanuel Macron says U.S. President Donald Trump's peace plan for Ukraine
00:05goes in the right direction, but warns that parts of the proposal must be improved
00:10before Europe or Kiev can accept it.
00:12Speaking to state media, he stressed that peace cannot come at the cost of surrender
00:17and that only Ukrainians can decide whether to give up any territory.
00:23Macron added that the U.S. proposal provides insights into what Russia might consider acceptable
00:29but insisted that does not mean Europe or Ukraine must agree.
00:33He emphasized that Ukraine alone can determine the terms of any land concessions,
00:38adding that France and Europe would not support any plan that forces Kiev into an unequal settlement.
00:45Macron also said Ukraine's first line of defense, should a peace deal emerge,
00:50must be rebuilding and strengthening its own military, with no limits imposed on its defense capabilities.
00:56The French leader also pushed back on provisions giving Washington influence over frozen Russian assets
01:02as part of the peace plan, saying the funds are located in Europe
01:06and that Europe alone can decide what to do with them.
01:10The comments come as European allies and Ukrainian officials continue to raise concerns
01:15that Trump's plan in its current form leans too heavily towards Kremlin's interests.
