'Presence' stars Lucy Liu, Chris Sullivan, Julia Fox, Callina Liang, Eddy Maday and West Mulholland stop by The Hollywood Reporter's studio in Park City during the Sundance film festival and talk being sworn to secrecy for this film project. Plus, Liang shares her real-life encounter with a ghost during filming and Fox shares her dreams of going to outer space.

00:00Does anyone have like a really good goal for 2024 or something they're like dying to accomplish or do this year?

00:06Eat well.

00:07Eat well.

00:09Go to outer space.

00:14For a lot of us, we didn't know this movie was happening until like three weeks ago, which is very exciting.

00:20But what was that like for you guys?

00:22Were you sitting on this like big fat secret for a long time?

00:26Yeah.

00:27Yeah, I mean, we were all sworn to secrecy, threatened with violence.

00:32I think I was able to say like we shot it in New Jersey and that was about it.

00:37Because everybody's like, where are you?

00:38Like, why aren't you at school?

00:39And I'm like, well, I'm in New Jersey.

00:40I'm going to be there soon, guys.

00:41I didn't say anything.

00:43I just thought it'd be safer to not mention it than I think once you give somebody that responsibility, it's theirs and it's too much.

00:51So I think it's better to just keep it to yourself.

00:54Did anybody tell anyone?

00:57Yeah, I might have labbed.

00:59You have my dependents.

01:00Yeah, my friends are, they're really thorough, really ride or die.

01:04So they're the vault.

01:06That's actually a really good way to root out like the true, the true people as if.

01:11Oh, I have like three friends left.

01:14So they've all been weeded out.

01:16Yeah, weeded themselves out.

01:17Was anyone actually spooked during any part of the filming of this movie?

01:25Well, I was a little bit spooked because there was actually a ghost in my hotel room while we were filming this movie.

01:32Incredible.

01:32Well, because my next question was, has anyone seen a ghost?

01:35Wow.

01:35So very on brand.

01:37There was, yeah, an entity there.

01:40What hotel was it?

01:42Uh, it was the Homewood Suites.

01:45In Cranford.

01:46The Homewood Suites by Hilton by the Garden State Highway.

01:49Yes.

01:50This is independent filmmaking.

01:52But you.

01:53Yeah.

01:53No judgment.

01:54It was like right next to an old people's home.

01:56So I think there was just a lot of spirits.

01:58And yeah, I experienced some supernatural things.

02:02I hear all the time of people who are on these kinds of like horror thriller sets that then start having these paranormal activities.

02:09And it's almost like you conjure them up because you're thinking about it.

02:13And then the seed is planted and then you manifest it.

02:16And then suddenly you've opened that door to the unknown.

02:21She had toilets flushing.

02:22She had knocking our walls, alarms going off.

02:26Were you guys like pranking on the set?

02:29Well, after the first ghost happening with Kalina, we decided it would be funny because our rooms were next to each other.

02:36So she heard the scratching and she like texted me.

02:39She's like, are you in your hotel room?

02:41And I was like, no.

02:42And I wasn't.

02:43So that was an actual ghost.

02:44The next night, me and Wes decided to like knock and scratch on the wall so that she could have a second appearance.

02:52Thank you so much.

02:53I think she read the giggling though.

02:55And they cut holes in their bedsheets.

02:58We had to pay for that.

03:00This is an independent movie.

03:01That's a lot of the budget.

03:02Going into fines from the Homewood Suites.

03:06What's like one top of mind thing from this experience that felt different?

03:11Stephen had a very specific vision and David Koepp, who wrote this script, it was very concentrated, very tight and compact.

03:21And so therefore, you know, we had to be very prepared to just be in this situation where he was going to shoot and go.

03:30Because Stephen does that anyway.

03:31He shoots very quickly and people know him for that.

03:33But I think, you know, understanding that it was just, it was, it really kind of brought us together even faster.

03:41And even though it was the 13-day shoot that was condensed to 11 days, we really just connected really well together.

03:49When people become more successful, what's a splurge that you treat yourself to?

03:54Or, like, something that's...

03:56Veneers.

03:59That's a really good one.

04:00Legos.

04:01That's really incredible.

04:02I love Legos so much.

04:04Still to this day.

04:04What did you say?

04:05Legos.

04:06We actually had my...

04:06It was 12.

04:08It might.

04:09Yeah, clearly.

04:09We're looking for more veneer to...

04:11We just did a Lord of the Rings watch party, all 14 hours.

04:15And we built a, like, Lego ribbon doll together.

04:18It's like a dorm floor.

04:18It's like one of the greatest experiences.

04:20That's my idea of fun right there.

04:22I love Legos.

04:23Does anyone have, like, a luxury that you cannot live without?

04:28Sleep.

04:29Yeah.

04:30I don't have it.

04:31Yeah.

04:32That luxury, but...

04:33I'd like to get that.

04:34...to have it.

04:35I would purchase it if I could.

04:37But there's just no way to get hours in the day.

04:40Wow.
