'Coda' star Emilia Jones plays former NSA translator Reality Winner, who in 2018 was sentenced to more than five years in prison for leaking information about Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, in the 2024 film 'Winner.' Cast members Jones, Zach Galifianakis, Danny Ramirez and Kathryn Newton, as well as filmmaker Susanna Fogel, joined The Hollywood Reporter in our Park City studio to talk about the movie. They also shared their plans for 2024 and spoke about the iconic films they've never seen.

00:00I'm a gym rat.
00:02CrossFit or specifically?
00:05Name it.
00:06If I'm not at Equinox, I'm at Crunch.
00:12Where's the party?
00:13The party tonight, the after party tonight is...
00:16What is your room number?
00:17There's a place called Umlauts.
00:19That we're all going to.
00:21Umlauts.
00:22Yeah.
00:23Lots of people will be there.
00:24Yes, absolutely.
00:25Is that a sweet alley, Park City?
00:27I can't tell where it is.
00:29Right.
00:30The location.
00:31I just know that's the name of the party.
00:32Well, Umlauts probably.
00:33Yeah.
00:34They ask how many people are going to show up and they just go, hmm, lots.
00:36The password is Nicky Haley.
00:38That's so good.
00:41I'm sitting up here and I feel like I'm observing the whole scene.
00:44I'm just like...
00:45What's the angle on the story of reality that you're telling?
00:50Well, funny person in a serious situation is my favorite genre of thing to read and consume
00:55and make.
00:56And this is the story of an incredibly funny, witty person who was in a horrifically intense
01:03situation.
01:04And so, you know, all of these projects about her show a different kind of a different star
01:09in the constellation of her life.
01:11And our movie sort of shows the coming of age story that came before that, the context
01:16that led to that, which involved her being really like a funny irreverent, like quintessentially
01:20millennial person with lots of contradictions who loved, you know, guns and dogs and her
01:24family.
01:25But she was always kind of saying the wrong thing at the wrong time.
01:27So it's really taking that person and like tracking her, her life story up until she did this
01:32thing that everyone knows her for.
01:34And then the aftermath of that to a lesser degree.
01:37But it's kind of, it's a coming of age dramedy about her family and her love life and all the
01:41other things that make her who she is.
01:43I'm curious if any of you guys have overlapping interests or quirks with any of realities.
01:50I'm a gym rat.
01:52CrossFit or specifically?
01:55Name it.
01:56If I'm not at Equinox, I'm at Crunch.
01:59What about New York sports club or that's, that's, no.
02:02That's, those were the comparisons that I could talk about.
02:06It's a hard question.
02:09Yeah.
02:10Like realities of comedy nerd, you know, so in a way like her references like culturally
02:16are like really have a lot of overlap with things that she thinks are funny are usually
02:20things that, you know, the shows she watches or the shows we all watch.
02:23And she's kind of like more plugged into the, the culture that you wouldn't necessarily
02:28like associate her with given how like intensely like political and she is, you know.
02:33Yeah.
02:34She's also kind of British in her sense of humor.
02:36She's like very, very sarcastic.
02:38So yeah, I definitely share that with reality.
02:41Do you guys have any interests or things like that, that we might be surprised to learn
02:46about you that people might not know?
02:48Brittany is a scientist and a chemist.
02:51And I took a physics class at UCLA recently.
02:54So we're kind of nerds.
02:56I did.
02:57How'd you do?
02:58I got an A obviously got an A.
03:00Woo!
03:01I was a nerd in school.
03:02Okay.
03:03I was pretty good in school.
03:04I wasn't going to be a scientist.
03:06Maybe, maybe in another version of my life.
03:09But I think, I think just that I, I like science.
03:13I liked, I heard she has a great podcast and I listened to it every day and I learned
03:16a lot.
03:17So I nerded out a little bit.
03:18Zach, if you were to bring reality onto Between Two Ferns, what would you want to ask?
03:28Why are you here?
03:30Um, I wouldn't want to do that to her.
03:34That's so sweet.
03:35No, she's, I would, no, I wouldn't want to put her in that situation.
03:39She's very funny though.
03:40I mean, I taught, I got to meet her yesterday.
03:43You can tell that she has a very sharp wit.
03:46She would be a good, a good guest on that.
03:49Uh, but, uh, yeah, I don't want to be mean to her.
03:53I hear that.
03:54It only like, like Barack Obama, he can.
03:56Well, he's powerful.
03:57It's okay to be mean to the powerful.
03:59That's the whole point.
04:01Yeah.
04:02Um, we'll get her a part and then she can.
04:04Oh yeah.
04:05Yes.
04:06Yes.
04:07That's right.
04:08There's a couple other things like on the to-do list.
04:09Yeah.
04:10Yeah.
04:11Totally.
04:12Check those out.
04:13Where are you hoping that your journey in 2024 takes you?
04:16I guess a lot of Philly accent.
04:18I have a TV show and I got a lot of Philly accents.
04:21That's my goal right now.
04:22Are you, are you watching anyone for inspiration?
04:25I'm watching Mare of Easttown.
04:27I'm just kidding.
04:28Okay.
04:29Yeah.
04:30And I'm, yeah, I don't know.
04:31You have any other suggestions?
04:32Well, you know what you should do?
04:33You should Google, um, Philly cheesesteak, critical local commercials.
04:37Cause they used to have them in Philadelphia.
04:40And if you, the, you will hear the most authentic, if you just look up local Philadelphia commercials,
04:45that's where you'll hear it.
04:46That's good.
04:47Okay.
04:48If you need me after this, that's what I'll be doing.
04:49Okay.
04:50About less.
04:51Yeah.
04:52That's what she says.
04:53I take it.
04:54I teach an acting class at the learning annex.
04:56If anyone's interested.
04:57What is a classic movie that you have pretended to have seen?
05:03I can promise you if anyone here answers, I will not make you watch that movie with me.
05:07Okay.
05:08Great.
05:09Titanic.
05:10Never seen it.
05:11Whoa.
05:12And now you guys are going to be like, let's come to my house.
05:13We're going to watch.
05:14That's what happens next.
05:15Whoa.
05:16That's kind of crazy.
05:17Never seen it.
05:18Is there a specific reason?
05:19And now I know all the references.
05:20The Star Wars.
05:21Wow.
05:22The Simons?
05:23Yeah.
05:24No one's upset about that the way they were.
05:26Any of the Star Wars's?
05:27No, none.
05:28None of them.
05:29Apart from the clip that we played in Capos.
05:32Right.
05:33Yes.
05:34That's true.
05:35Other than that.
05:36You played a person who was bored by a movie that you've actually never seen.
05:37Zach, anything?
05:38He's seen it all.
05:39You've seen everything.
05:40He's an acting teacher.
05:41I've never seen The Animal House.
05:43I mean, I think you're supposed to see that movie if you're a comedian, but I've never seen
05:48it.
05:49Or The Hangover movies.
05:52You didn't watch it?
05:53What are those?
05:54They're really funny.
05:55I love those movies.
05:56I'll be the judge of that.
