00:00Issa Rae and the cast of Rapshit are giving their hot takes for this year's Grammy Awards.
00:05The trio, including Rapshit stars Chameleon and Ida Osman, sat down with a Hollywood reporter
00:10to discuss their connection to this year's nominees and season two of their HBO Max hit
00:15before giving their unfiltered predictions as to who will take each category at this year's Grammys.
00:20For that, I want Barbie World to win because I didn't have to dance to that.
00:25I want my boss's movie to win.
00:26Rae has always used music as a storytelling tool, from her groundbreaking series Insecure
00:32to her current adventure Rapshit.
00:38Music is an extra cast member on the call sheet. Music elevates the storytelling of everything.
00:47So it's hard not to think of Rae when you look at some of the nominees at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
00:52SZA is the top contender with nine nominations and had a majority of her acclaimed debut album
00:57played on season two of Insecure.
01:00Victoria Monet, who has seven nominations, helped close out season three with her track The Glow.
01:05And Leon Thomas, who was nominated for Best R&B Song for SZA Snooze,
01:09played the role of Eddie, aka Neighbor Bay, on the show,
01:12as well as many others who have been featured on Insecure or Rapshit
01:16that are nominated at the February 4th award show.
01:19It's an honor that Insecure has been able to feature so many artists,
01:24giving them their first syncs.
01:26We've done the same on Rapshit, and to see them be awarded and acknowledged at the Grammys,
01:33it just, you know, I feel proud of it.
01:36The trio then dived into several categories, giving their thoughts on who will come out on top,
01:41including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Rap Song, and more.
01:45Yeah, I love Lana Del Rey. I'm like, where you been, girl? But I don't know.
01:49I think I'm gonna give you the SZA.
01:50All of these songs are TikTok songs.
01:52Damn.
01:53You cannot avoid these on the internet.
01:55I love Janelle Monae's album was phenomenal as well.
01:57Yeah, she's got a freaky album.
01:58Yeah, come on, show us some more to these.
02:00Yeah.
02:02There's no need to explain the connection between music and storytelling
02:05in their HBO Max series, Rapshit, which centers on two Miami-based rappers
02:10who try to make it in the music industry.
02:12Rey explains that she created the show after being inspired by the female rap movement,
02:17as well as listening to the greats like Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and Lil' Kim.
02:21This moment in particular felt so special, and it felt unique in a way that there was an abundance
02:27of female rappers all at the same time just working and thriving.
02:33They also dive into season two, which Rey says echoes the current landscape of female rap.
02:38It kind of complements season two, which I'm really excited to get,
02:42in the way that Shauna and Mia have a beef and have had to come together.
02:47There are just so many elements that mimic real life that we imagine real-life female
02:52rappers have had to go through that make it really special and unique.
02:56Elsewhere, Chameleon and Osman opened up about what it's been like having Rey as their badass boss.
03:01Like, so crazy, like, watching her work.
03:04Sometimes you think she has a twin because she's, like, everywhere.
03:07But she's like Santa Claus.
03:08Like, how can you be everywhere?
03:10I want to be like her, you know?
03:12She's a f***ing mogul, man.
03:13I would just let Issa and Molly sometimes play on mute while I wrote.
03:18I just love looking at y'all.
03:19Yeah, I want to be just like her.
03:22Yeah.
