At MCM Comic Con London, we sat down with actor Alix Wilton Regan and talked the future of Dragon Age, her experience playing iconic characters, why she loves conventions, and much more.
Transcript
00:00So thank you for sitting and chatting with us Alex. Thank you for having me. How are you doing? I'm really good. How are you? I'm good. Yay. I'm good.
00:06We're just going to be a bit chill with this. Just ask some sort of general fun questions. Okay go on I'm ready for a general fun question. Hang on.
00:13My big vibe. I'm going to hide that around the corner. Give me a general fun question. Well the first one. Obviously conventions are a big thing for fans.
00:20Yes. They come and they meet you and they love the characters you make. Yes. So what do cons mean to you?
00:26I will go on the record. I freaking love a con. I'm not going to swear. Replace the one.
00:35I freaking love cons. Okay. Because there's a couple of things about being an actor which attract you to being an actor in the first place.
00:48For me the first one is obviously getting to inhabit different characters, different worlds, telling different stories.
00:54The second is how good the script is, right? So the first is like you get a character. The second is how good your script is and what journey it takes you on.
01:02But the third is surely the impact of your work which is why theatre is such a wonderfully powerful medium as you're on stage and you have people reacting to you then and there in the auditorium.
01:13Well I predominantly work as a PCAP artist now. So as a performance capture artist you know in video games I get immediate feedback on the set but it's the crew so they have to be nice to me.
01:29So actually the place where I find out how deeply that work has resonated hopefully if I've done a good job is at conventions, it's at cons.
01:41That's where you meet people and they say this really moved me, this changed my life.
01:45So for me I love meeting the fans. That's where you get the feedback about how hopefully good you did.
01:51On the topic of fans as well, I've seen a lot of people cosplaying your characters.
01:57Which ones?
01:58I've seen a lot of alts.
01:59Yes, alts very popular. The Inquisitor was like huge like 10 years ago. Huge, yeah.
02:07And I've seen a few Augustas as well.
02:09Yes, I haven't met an Augusta yet. I've seen Augusta online. I haven't met an Augusta in the flesh.
02:13I've met a Leia from Lies of P. I've met a couple of Leias. I've met a lot of Inquisitors.
02:19Because I've met, oh my goodness, who have I met? I think I met a Tassie Trianon from Amnesia Rebirth.
02:27I need to meet, I need to meet an Augusta because Augusta's incredible. I mean what a costume, yeah.
02:32Is it like quite a surreal experience having someone walk up to you in cosplay as the character you portrayed?
02:38Yeah, it's brilliant. So I was at a convention for Elder Scrolls and they had hired this incredible woman to play Ithelia,
02:47who is the character that I play in the game. She looked amazing. She had these huge wings that were like the size of this panel.
02:54She was excited to meet me. I was excited to meet her. She looked insane.
02:59And I mean, she had cues round the block to have, because people wanted their picture taken with her.
03:04And rightly so. Rightly so. Yeah.
03:06With sort of video games in general, obviously you've been in quite a few very well-known ones.
03:13Yeah.
03:13Is there any video game series you would want to be in that you haven't had the opportunity to be in yet?
03:19I really want to join the Naughty Dog family.
03:22Yes.
03:22I would very much like to work for Neil Druckmann and any of his writing partners and collaborators.
03:29I think that Naughty Dog pushed the envelope for brilliant writing in video games.
03:36The way that, you know, very much I feel that Bioware has as well.
03:40The way that I feel that Round 8 has with Lies of P in their franchise.
03:46I'm interested in the writing because the writing is the foundation upon which everything rests.
03:53You can't do much without a great script.
03:58You have to have a great script.
04:00And a great script truly is a gift.
04:02So, yeah, I would very much like to join the Naughty Dog family in some capacity.
04:08Nice.
04:09With the sort of topic of great scripts and nice writing and all of that amazing stuff,
04:16is there any moment that you have been given in a script that has moved you more than any others?
04:21Not more than any others.
04:23I mean, so many.
04:25Sam Traynor and Fem Shep's parting in Mass Effect 3.
04:30The Inquisitor's line of could one thing in this f***ing world just stay fixed in the DLC,
04:36in Trespasser for Dragon Age Inquisition.
04:42Leia's whole thing in Lies of P Overture about I won't be late, not this time,
04:48and her guilt about, you know, not being able to save someone that she feels is her brother,
04:53you know, in that brotherly position.
04:56Even Augusta in Wuthering Waves, the way she's been rallying people and she rallies and she rallies
05:02and she rallies and she keeps going.
05:06You know, obviously it's now cancelled, but Joanna Dark's strength and incredible intelligence,
05:11you know, I obviously saw a lot more of the game than anyone else did,
05:16but just her incredible intelligence and the way that she was going through the game,
05:21you know, putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
05:26Every, Tassie Trianon's journey in Amnesia Rebirth,
05:30I mean, what a gift of a role to an actress.
05:33That is a, you know, that is a game that has, you know,
05:39not nearly the same volume of players as some of the other games I've done,
05:43but oh my God, what a gift of a role for an actress.
05:46I was so grateful to play her.
05:48She was extraordinary.
05:49She was extraordinary.
05:50Yeah.
05:51On the topic of like Perfect Dark, obviously, unfortunately that was cancelled.
05:55I know.
05:56What was the character like?
05:58If you can tell us anything at all about her.
06:01Yeah, I mean, I think stuff that's already publicly known.
06:04You know, she was highly skilled.
06:08She was highly intelligent.
06:11And yet, she had a very big journey to go on, you know.
06:19She was a Londoner, like me.
06:21And it's just a shame that people aren't going to experience the journey of that game
06:32and the arc that I was privileged to see when I was performance capturing her stuff
06:40or voice recording her stuff, you know, because the writing was sensational.
06:44It looked gorgeous and I was as shocked as everyone else.
06:47I was as shocked and as sad as everyone else was when it came to an end.
06:51Yeah, everyone was looking forward to it and it was a sort of long time coming.
06:55So when it got cancelled, it was a massive shock.
06:57Everyone was shocked, you know.
06:58When you let go of that many people, it's an entire ecosystem of artistry that disappears overnight
07:07from the writers to the animators, the directors, the producers, the actors.
07:11It's really sad.
07:12It's sad what happened.
07:14Yeah.
07:14Were you quite far into production with it?
07:17Yes.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I was, you know.
07:19I auditioned in 2020 and we started work in earnest in 2023.
07:25And it's 2025.
07:27So that's a solid two years of my life that I had kind of been back and forth on that project
07:32that I was really just looking forward to sharing with everyone.
07:35Yeah.
07:36It's tough.
07:37Yeah, it's really tough.
07:38I was so sad to see it cancelled.
07:39So was I.
07:40Yeah.
07:40You know, hopefully maybe one day, maybe one day things will come right again.
07:46Yeah.
07:46I am.
07:46They know where to find me if they want me.
07:50Obviously now you're Augusta and Wuthering Way.
07:52Yes, I am.
07:53Just tell me a bit about that role.
07:54Like, do you vibe with the character personally?
07:57Was she fun to play?
07:58Oh, yeah.
07:58She was so much fun to play.
07:59Do I vibe with her?
08:01Yeah, she's a leader.
08:02She's like, she's, you know, she brings people together.
08:06She is the kind of heartbeat of the group and she is the rallying cry that moves people
08:12forwards.
08:13I'm convinced she's an Aquarius like me.
08:16Oh, yeah.
08:17Definitely.
08:17But she's, yeah, she's wonderfully unapologetic and powerful in her own right.
08:26And I love that about her.
08:28Yeah.
08:28She's great.
08:29And I love her costume.
08:31Oh, yeah.
08:31I love her costume so much.
08:33I've never cosplayed before.
08:34I would consider cosplaying Augusta.
08:36Oh, my God.
08:37That is how much, you heard it here first, guys.
08:40Like, that is how fantastic I think her costume is.
08:43Yeah.
08:43She looks insane.
08:44She does.
08:45Yeah.
08:45She has a crown of the sun.
08:47Like, come on.
08:48You know?
08:48She's so cool.
08:49I actually think she's a Leo, to be fair.
08:50I'm not sure she is an Aquarius, but she's definitely, she's like, I've got Leo in my
08:53chart as well.
08:54So, she's definitely got a lot of Leo in her chart.
08:57Yeah.
08:57She seems to be quite a fan favourite as well.
09:00Yeah, people love her.
09:01People really love playing as her.
09:03Yeah.
09:03Yeah, yeah.
09:04And a lot of people say she's quite challenging to play as.
09:06Is she?
09:06I didn't know that, actually.
09:07I've never played her.
09:08I didn't know that.
09:08Okay, that's interesting.
09:09Some people are saying that she's too difficult, but other people really, really love her.
09:13Difficult.
09:14Yeah, but, you know.
09:15If she's a leader.
09:16If you want a rainbow, guys, you have to put up with the rain.
09:21So, keep, persevere, persevere.
09:24Yeah.
09:24Obviously, you've worked with a lot of other sort of artists.
09:30A lot of them are here today.
09:31Yes.
09:32So, yeah.
09:33We've got all my Mass Effect family, Jennifer Hale, Ali Hillis, Mark Mir.
09:37So, yeah.
09:38What is it like to sort of collaborate with other actors?
09:42Oh, I love them.
09:43Yeah?
09:44Yeah.
09:44Sorry, I finished your question, but I do.
09:45I love them.
09:46Yeah.
09:46And sort of how do you effectively collab with other actors and artists?
09:51Um, you kind of look into their eyes and you give them something and you hope that they'll
09:57receive it and you trust that they'll give something back.
10:01And it's sort of like, you know, it's a, it's a ping pong game.
10:04You know, you give, you receive, you give, you receive.
10:07And I think what's so beautiful about acting, certainly the kind of acting that I love to
10:13do, um, is it's very instinctive.
10:17It's very fresh.
10:19It's never over-rehearsed.
10:22Um, I want to see what happens and what comes out.
10:25And very, very rarely do I believe that something is wrong.
10:31It's not wrong.
10:31It's just different.
10:32Okay.
10:33Yes.
10:33Sometimes you can go down a path that is not the path that your director wants you to tread.
10:37So they'll bring you back here.
10:39But I always say that 80% of acting is, is good casting.
10:45You know, I produce now.
10:47So as a producer, I know that if my, if I've done my casting right, that is 80% of my job
10:53done and then it's just about steering the ship.
10:56Yeah.
10:57It must be quite difficult or not difficult.
10:59Maybe challenging is the correct word when you're doing sort of performance capture and
11:03you obviously are not in the video game environment.
11:06You don't have all of the props in front of you and it's a sort of theater of the mind.
11:11Yeah.
11:11You let your imagination run wild.
11:13Yeah.
11:13Is that sort of difficult for you to get in the mindset or do you have a sort of switch
11:18that you flick and like, I am suddenly in.
11:20I think I have a switch.
11:22Yeah.
11:22I think I have a switch that kind of goes off and on.
11:25And then it's really interesting because sometimes the director will be like, what, what did
11:28you think?
11:29They're, they're often American.
11:30They're like, what did you think about that?
11:31Were you happy with that?
11:32And I'm like, I have no idea what just happened.
11:34I was just being Joanna Dark.
11:37I couldn't tell you what happened in the take, you know?
11:39So you, but you know, when you're connected to yourself, you know, when you're telling the
11:44truth, you know, when it, you do know when it feels right, but you can't necessarily
11:48consciously talk about what happened.
11:52That makes sense.
11:52Yeah.
11:53Yeah.
11:53Are there any video games that are currently your game of the year?
11:57Do you know, I haven't played it yet, but I really want to play Expedition 33.
12:05Yeah.
12:05Everyone's nodding.
12:06Everyone in the room is nodding.
12:08So it looks fantastic.
12:10And I'm a big fan of Jennifer English's work.
12:14And I know Ben Starr is in it as well.
12:16And I think they're both brilliant.
12:17So I would, that is a game that I am longing to play that I have not yet had the chance
12:22to.
12:23Ghost of Yotei, you know, Erika Ishi, Nusheer Dalal, sensational actors.
12:30Um, so yeah, I'd really like to play that.
12:35Cause we also, I played the first game, so I'd like to play that.
12:38Um, got it downloaded.
12:40They're, they're, yeah, they're the two big ones that I'm like, come on, Alex, make the
12:44time, make the time.
12:48Um, a lot of people are calling for an indie title called Megabonk to be game of the year.
12:53Oh, okay.
12:54Sorry.
12:55Okay.
12:55Is this about, no.
12:57Oh, it's not about.
12:58No.
12:58It's like a Megabonk, Megabonk.
13:00I don't know.
13:01It could be about.
13:02It could be about sex.
13:04It could be.
13:05For anyone watching this that's not English, bonk and bonking means sexy time.
13:12Is that not correct?
13:14I mean, I think that would be a good sort of advertisement of the game.
13:15Yeah, bonking.
13:16They were bonking.
13:17Yeah.
13:18Sexy time.
13:19What is Megabonk about?
13:21It's like a vampire survivor sort of, um.
13:23Literally nothing to do with sex.
13:25No.
13:25Okay, great.
13:26This is going to go down so well on the internet.
13:28You can play a skeleton riding a skateboard.
13:32I beg your pardon.
13:32Skeleton riding a skateboard.
13:33I'm joking.
13:34I mean, that's kind of sexy, maybe.
13:36To some people.
13:37I'm not sure.
13:37But Megabonk.
13:39Megabonk.
13:39Is what people are calling for.
13:40Noted.
13:41Noted.
13:41Okay.
13:42Um.
13:43I've got some fan questions.
13:45Go for it.
13:45I love a fan question.
13:46I am the fan.
13:47Okay.
13:47I am asking the questions.
13:49Um.
13:50I'm a big fan of Dragon Age.
13:51Yes, I'm a big fan of Dragon Age too.
13:53Always will be.
13:54Same.
13:54Um.
13:55The Inquisitor.
13:56I love The Inquisitor.
13:57She's my baby.
13:58She can date a lot of people.
13:59Yes.
14:00She can be with a lot of people.
14:01Yes.
14:02Who is your favourite Inquisitorship?
14:05All of them.
14:05No.
14:09By which I mean.
14:10By which I mean.
14:12Each relationship.
14:13Has their value.
14:15In their own kind of different way.
14:16Like.
14:17Obviously Freddie Prinze Jr.'s.
14:18Is the more like extreme.
14:20And pushing down that path.
14:22And then Sarah's.
14:23Is like very sweet.
14:25And then Solis.
14:25Is hugely emotional.
14:27And is.
14:28You know.
14:28If you go down the Solis route.
14:30Like you're going to have your heart broken.
14:31And then.
14:33It's not a spoiler.
14:34At this point.
14:35For Veilgard.
14:35But like.
14:35And you know.
14:36Have it put back together.
14:37And.
14:38I can't choose one favourite.
14:40But I can see.
14:42How.
14:43Each romance has their place.
14:45If that makes sense.
14:46I do think.
14:47The Solis relationship.
14:49In particular.
14:50Is incredibly well written.
14:51Yeah.
14:51So.
14:52Yeah.
14:52I'm a Solis girlie.
14:53Yeah.
14:53Of course you are babe.
14:55I have that look about me.
14:56Of course you are.
14:57Would you consider.
14:59Obviously the fans.
15:00Yeah.
15:00Solis and the Inquisitor.
15:02Solar Vellon.
15:03Yes.
15:03I love that.
15:04Would you personally.
15:06Consider that.
15:07The canon ending.
15:08For the Inquisitor.
15:09I'm going to get assassinated.
15:12Whatever I answer to this question.
15:19Possibly yes.
15:20Sorry.
15:23I'm going to get shot down.
15:24Whatever I say.
15:25But.
15:25Yeah.
15:25Yeah.
15:26Come on.
15:26You know.
15:27That's a big thing guys.
15:29Yeah.
15:29Yeah.
15:30Yeah.
15:30Solis.
15:31Lovely egg boy.
15:31I know.
15:32Egghead.
15:32We love an egghead.
15:33We love an egghead.
15:34And also his voice.
15:35Come on.
15:36His voice.
15:38You know.
15:39So yeah.
15:39He's got that grumpiness about him.
15:41It's just.
15:41Yeah.
15:41It's all delicious.
15:42It's lovely.
15:43That little evil streak running through him.
15:46So yeah.
15:46Love him.
15:47I'm also a big fan of Bull.
15:48Yeah.
15:49Of course.
15:49We love the Iron Bull.
15:50Hey.
15:52I also love the Iron Bull.
15:54So yeah.
15:55Nice.
15:55On the topic of Dragon Age as well.
15:59Yes.
15:59Obviously the future of Dragon Age is sort of in the air at the moment.
16:02I know.
16:03I know.
16:04What would you like to see happen with the Dragon Age franchise?
16:07I just want to see the Inquisitor come back.
16:09Tis but a simple wish from a simple girl in London.
16:13What would I like to see happen next for the franchise?
16:20Do you know?
16:21That's a really good question that I hadn't considered.
16:23I would say that the thing that kind of moves me the most is I'm just very aware that the Inquisitor is probably not coming back.
16:30Which is really sad.
16:32But what an ending.
16:34Yeah.
16:34You know?
16:34What an ending.
16:35And what a journey for the Inquisitor.
16:37There's definitely a world in which you bring in, I would say, all of the protagonists.
16:44You know, Inquisitor, Rook, Hawk, everyone.
16:48You know, maybe something wild and wacky like that where they all just walk out of the Fade or something and, I don't know, have to work together.
16:57Avengers Assemble style.
16:58Yeah.
16:58You know, that kind of thing.
17:00I would personally love to see a more in-depth tale about Dorian.
17:04Yeah.
17:04I mean, Dorian's hot, guys.
17:06Dorian is hot.
17:11Do you have a favorite Dragon Age companion of all time?
17:17Companion?
17:17I wouldn't say I do have a favorite companion.
17:23I can remember them all, like, so clearly.
17:26And I can remember hearing different voices, you know, from Josephine to Cassandra to the bull to Varric to Dorian to Sarah.
17:38Like, Solus.
17:39I can remember them.
17:41I was on Dragon Age Inquisition for so many years.
17:45It's a very physical thing for me, kind of remembering those voices in my head.
17:51Scout.
17:52Yeah.
17:52Creme.
17:53I can remember them so clearly.
17:54I wouldn't say I have a favorite.
17:57I would say that they are all different ingredients to make a beautiful melting pot of deliciousness.
18:04Yeah.
18:05Very nice.
18:05And final question for you.
18:07If you had to give advice to anyone who is looking to do what you do.
18:12Yeah.
18:12Because I think a lot of modern games have made people go, I would quite like to try my hand at that.
18:18It's something I've never thought about before.
18:19Yes.
18:21What advice would you give people who are looking to be in your shoes?
18:25Certainly, like, my personal journey is, you know, I'm an actor first and foremost.
18:30I went to drama school.
18:31So I went down what I would call a kind of classical route, I guess, in the UK.
18:35I don't know if that's the same the world over.
18:37But certainly here, if you want to be an actor, you go to drama school.
18:40If you don't want to go to drama school, you're certainly doing lessons, you know, Saturday morning classes as a kid.
18:46Or you're doing after hours classes as an adult if you want to go into voice acting.
18:52And I guess you have to learn your craft of acting first and foremost before becoming specifically a voice actor.
19:02That make sense?
19:03Because first and foremost, you are an actor.
19:04So you have to be able to understand a script, dissect a script, process it, digest it, communicate it with honesty and integrity and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
19:13All those kind of things.
19:16Then you cross your fingers and you hope and pray for the best ride possible, you know.
19:24Because if you get cast, you're lucky.
19:29You're lucky.
19:30You know, I know a lot of extremely talented actors that I was at drama school with who have never worked, who none of you will have ever have heard of simply because they didn't look right and they didn't fit a casting bracket.
19:43I work because I'm really, really lucky, you know, because there's a lot of and I have a bit of talent that's sort of dawning on me as I now approach 20 years in this industry.
19:54But yeah, I think you have to be, of course, you need talent, but you also need tenacity and you need perseverance and you need strength of will to keep going after it from rejection after rejection after rejection.
20:07And you got to get lucky because if you don't get lucky, you won't be working.
20:11Every single actor that is working, whatever they tell you, there is one common truth.
20:17They got lucky.
20:18They got lucky.
20:20You know.
20:21If you could take any of your characters that you portrayed out for dinner.
20:24Oh.
20:25Who would you take out for dinner?
20:27Who would I take out for dinner?
20:30It's like the best question anyone's ever asked me.
20:32Who would I go for dinner with?
20:34Oh, my God.
20:35Um, I think the person that's really coming to mind is probably the Inquisitor because there's so many different facets to her.
20:51Obviously, people like Alts from Cyberpunk have a more linear story.
20:56Amazing, but have a more linear story.
20:59Whereas just by virtue of the fact that with the Inquisitor, you can be so much, you can do so much, you can see so much.
21:05You can experience so much.
21:07It'd be a fascinating conversation.
21:10So it'd probably have to be the Inquisitor.
21:12Nice.
21:12Where would I take her?
21:15I feel like she could, like, I feel like she'd be well into junk food.
21:19Take her to a Toby Carvery.
21:20Yeah, like a Toby Carvery.
21:22I was going to say, like, I was thinking up market junk food burger joint.
21:27You know what I mean?
21:27Like a sort of, um, like a sort of Five Guys patty and bun.
21:32Yeah.
21:32And that kind of, like, I feel like a posh burger.
21:35I think that would be the Inquisitor's thing.
21:37Nice.
21:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
21:39I'd go out for dinner with Alt.
21:40Yeah.
21:41I just love Alt.
21:41Well, Alt is, she's so hot as well.
21:44I'll take Joey as well.
21:45I'll take both of them out.
21:46Yeah, you take both of them out.
21:47You're going to have a lot of fun that night, sweetie.
21:51Thank you very much for your time.
21:52Thank you so much.
21:53It's so nice to see you.
21:53Nice to see you.
21:55Yay.
