What makes the music of Assassin's Creed so powerful? Jesper Kyd, the mastermind behind the score, breaks down his process for creating Ezio's theme and explains how music was essential to understanding the character's emotional arc.

00:00The emotions I was trying to convey with Ezio's family theme really connects with who Ezio is as a person.
00:06The way he was thrown into the life of being an assassin when his father was killed.
00:10I felt it was such a big part of the main character that I needed to write a theme to
00:15really understand Ezio.
00:17Writing historical music for Assassin's Creed is a tricky thing because when we started working on Assassin's Creed 2,
00:23one of the first things we discussed was that the music couldn't be too inspired by the Renaissance to a
00:29point where the music would perhaps become a little bit too realistic
00:34or maybe not exciting enough for the story arc that Ezio goes through.
00:38It needed something extra. It needed modern elements mixed with the Renaissance.
00:43So it clearly sounded like we're being transported to the Renaissance, but at the same time it has a modern
00:49aesthetic.
00:50We're still playing a video game, of course.
