00:00Even with new offerings from both Sony and STX hitting theaters, we might still be
00:04coming up on a sleepy box office this weekend.
00:07First up, Sony released Black & Blue overnight where it earned $675,000 in Thursday
00:13night previews. The studio is projecting a $6 million weekend with industry experts
00:18tracking just a bit higher with an $8.5 million debut. Naomi Harris and Tyrese
00:22Gibson star in the action thriller about a rookie cop who inadvertently captures a
00:27murder of a young drug dealer on her body cam. Sony is also bringing back an extended
00:31version of Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood which has already grossed
00:35$140 million at the domestic box office. Meanwhile, STX released Countdown which earned
00:40$515,000 on Thursday night at just over 2,000 theaters but a wider release is expected
00:46on Friday. The horror flick rolling out just in time for spooky season follows a young
00:51nurse who downloads an app that claims to predict exactly when a person is going to
00:55die, but the app tells her she only has three days left to live. Freaky.
00:59Elsewhere, a current war director's cut is tracking for a $3 million bow. The pic
01:04about the tight race between Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse to illuminate the
01:071893 Chicago World's Fair was sidelined during the Harvey Weinstein controversy but
01:12now it's the first release from 101 Studios, the new company launched by former
01:16Weinstein COO David Glasser.
01:18And finally, holdovers from both Disney and Warner Brothers, Maleficent and Joker, look to be
01:23locked in a close battle for the number one spot. Each is tracking in the $14 million to $15
01:28million range. For more on this story, head to THR.com and until next time, for the
