00:05Greta Gerwig is weighing in on Joe Coy's Barbie joke at the Golden Globes,
00:09which many called sexist. While appearing on BBC Radio 4 Today, the writer and director
00:14addressed the quip Coy delivered during his first Globes hosting gig. The joke has been
00:18criticized by some for being reductive or sexist, and some Globes viewers noticed that the audience
00:24wasn't necessarily laughing either. But Gerwig offered a different take on Coy's joke.
00:28Well, he's not wrong. She's the first doll that was mass-produced with breasts,
00:32so he was right on. And you know, I think that so much of the project of the movie was unlikely
00:37because it is about a plastic doll. Gerwig went on to add that Barbie, a toy her own mother,
00:42was hesitant about her playing with when she was young, by her very construction has no character,
00:47no story. She's there to be projected upon. The Oscar-nominated filmmaker added that throughout
00:51Barbie's history, which began in 1959, she has been at points ahead of and behind the culture.
00:57She's been a villain, and she's been a hero, but it felt like, in a way, even though it's so
01:02seemingly superficial, that it was such a rich place to start. Gerwig is among a growing number
01:07of voices who have weighed in on Coy's controversial jokes.
01:10On the Golden Globes, we have fewer camera shots of Taylor Swift. I swear, there's just more to go to
01:17here. On Tuesday, both Steve Martin and Whoopi Goldberg, as two actor-comedians themselves,
01:22acknowledged the difficulty of the job.
01:24I don't know whether it was the room. I don't know whether it was the jokes. I didn't get to
01:28see it, but I do know that he is as good as it gets. Martin wrote, congratulations to Joe Coy,
01:35who took on the toughest gig in show business, hit, missed, was light on his feet, and now has 20
01:40minutes of new material for his stand-up. For more on this story, head to THR.com. And for the latest
