00:00Yeah, I can put this down, right? No, I just...
00:03I don't work out, you know what I mean? I can't hold it that long.
00:09Welcome to Ms. Mojo, and today, we're counting down our picks for the funniest acceptance speeches in Golden Globe's history.
00:16We'll be leaving off monologues and presenters.
00:19I was just flushing the toilet and someone said, you won, and I thought they were joking.
00:24Number 20, Julie Andrews, 22nd Golden Globe Awards.
00:28Although Julie Andrews played Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway production of My Fair Lady,
00:33Jack Warner wanted a name that film audiences were more accustomed to for the screen adaptation.
00:38Enter Audrey Hepburn.
00:40We suddenly realized that if Jack Warner had asked me to do My Fair Lady, which I missed out on,
00:46I would never have been able to do Mary Poppins.
00:48Despite being better known as a stage performer at the time,
00:51Andrews soon became a household name with her iconic turn as Mary Poppins.
00:55In an ironic turn, Hepburn and Andrews were nominated against each other at the Golden Globes
01:01for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical, or Comedy.
01:04Andrews prevailed, cheekily thanking the person who made this possible, Jack Warner.
01:09It's a wonderful memento of a very, very happy time.
01:13Finally, my thanks to a man who made a wonderful movie,
01:16and who made all this possible in the first place, Mr. Jack Warner.
01:18It was a polite way of throwing shade at Warner for not casting her,
01:25although even Jack seemed to be laughing so hard that he wiped tears from his eyes.
01:29And everybody screamed.
01:31It was like a thunderous scream.
01:34And everybody was laughing.
01:35Including Mr. Warner, so I was home and safe.
01:39Number 19. Seth Rogen.
01:4183rd Golden Globe Awards.
01:43But if the movie Zoe Kravitz directed wins Best Musical or Comedy like it's supposed to,
01:47she will thank me in her speech in front of millions of people.
01:50Everybody will hear her say my name.
01:52Talk about a full-circle award show moment.
01:55The studio may be the ultimate Hollywood in-joke,
01:58with a revolving door of celebrities playing themselves amid a barrage of inside baseball.
02:03Among the A-listers who got in on the gag were Zoe Kravitz and Dave Franco.
02:07It was practically preordained when Kravitz and Franco presented a Golden Globe to the star of the
02:12studio, Seth Rogen.
02:14The irony wasn't lost on Rogen, who noted that one of his show's episodes revolved around his
02:19character wanting recognition at the Globes.
02:21This is so weird.
02:24We just pretended to do this.
02:28And now it's happening.
02:31I thought the only way I would get to hold one is to create a whole show to give myself a fake one.
02:36He might not have thanked Sal Saperstein, but he did give a shout-out to fellow nominees
02:41Steve Martin and Martin Short, reminiscing about how he dreamed of beating them someday.
02:45They'd better be in season two.
02:47Steve Martin, Martin Short especially, I remember growing up watching you guys
02:51my whole life thinking, one day I'm going to beat them.
02:58I did not think that.
03:00Number 18.
03:01Tracy Morgan, 66th Golden Globe Awards.
03:0430 Rock was an awards magnate, although Tracy Morgan often went overlooked for his uproarious
03:10performance as Tracy Jordan.
03:11It's not fearless, Lemon.
03:13Everybody wins awards but me.
03:14That doesn't mean he never got a chance to give an acceptance speech.
03:17When 30 Rock won the Golden Globe for Best Musical or Comedy Series, Morgan got to speak
03:22on the show's behalf.
03:24Tina Fey and I had an agreement that if Barack Obama won, I would speak for the show from now on.
03:30Morgan proclaimed he'd be giving all of the acceptance speeches henceforth because Barack
03:34Obama had recently won the presidency.
03:37While Morgan's comment about post-racial America plays differently given what came several years
03:41later, his speech was still a laugh riot, taking shots at Cate Blanchett and the Emmys.
03:47Welcome to post-racial America.
03:50I'm the face of post-racial America.
03:53Deal with it, Cate Blanchett.
03:55Among his list of thank yous, Morgan mentioned the lady from Kraft Service, before Alec Baldwin
03:59reminded him to also mention their then-boss, Jeff Zucker.
04:03Number 17, Hugh Laurie, 63rd Golden Globe Awards and 64th Golden Globe Awards.
04:19Hugh Laurie won back-to-back Golden Globes for his performance as Dr. Gregory House.
04:23For some American audiences, his 2006 win was the moment that made them say, wait, he's British?
04:29So what I did was I wrote down the 172 names, put them on little individual pieces of paper.
04:33I have them in my left-hand trouser pocket.
04:35I'm just going to draw out three at random.
04:37They also realized that Laurie was funny.
04:40And not in a purely cynical Dr. House way, Laurie wanted to thank 172 people.
04:46With limited time, he drew three names from his pocket in a lottery of sorts.
04:50Make that four, as he threw out one name in exchange for another.
04:53What the hell with that?
04:54I'd like to thank my agent, Christian Hodel.
05:04That's not my handwriting.
05:05Laurie would get around to thanking several others regardless.
05:08He'd thank more people the following year, although he wished somebody else could have written a speech for him.
05:14If that had been the case, though, we would have been deprived of this comedic gold.
05:18I know everyone says they have a wonderful crew, and logically that can't be the case.
05:21They can't all be wonderful.
05:24Somebody somewhere is working with a crew of drunken thieves.
05:29Bill Murray demonstrated his serious chops in Lost in Translation, although that film was still submitted as a comedy at the Golden Globes.
05:40When Murray won for his performance, he leaned into his sarcastic persona, starting by saying that he had fired his agents months ago.
05:48You can all relax. I fired my agents a couple of months ago.
05:53Murray thanked the studios that made the film possible, while also mocking the various employees taking credit.
05:59The one truly responsible was writer-director Sofia Coppola, who made Murray the envy of everyone else in the room.
06:05Murray not only found the time to thank his fellow comedy nominees, but also to spotlight the forgotten dramatic actors.
06:23In reality, drama often overshadows comedy at awards.
06:26Murray's speech is a testament to the phrase,
06:28Dying is easy. Comedy is hard.
06:30And I'd just like to say, without them, where would our war, our misery, and our psychological dramas come from?
06:37Let's not forget them tonight.
06:39Number 15. Robert Downey Jr. 67th Golden Globe Awards
06:44Sherlock Holmes is always ten steps ahead, but Robert Downey Jr. was seemingly caught off guard when he won a Golden Globe for playing the master detective.
06:52That might be because his wife, Susan Downey, said Matt Damon was going to win.
06:57If you start playing violins, I will tear this joint apart.
07:00First of all, I'd like to thank Susan Downey for telling me that Matt Damon was going to win, so don't bother to prepare a speech.
07:07Without a speech prepared, Downey said that he had nobody to thank.
07:10So instead, he listed all of the people that he wasn't going to thank.
07:14What am I going to do?
07:16Thank Joel Silver, the guy who's only restarted my career 12 times since I began 25 years ago.
07:22While Downey clearly had great affection for all of the people he mentioned, he argued that they should all be bowing down to him.
07:28Fair enough, as we're not sure that Sherlock Holmes would have been able to compete with Avatar at the box office if it didn't have Tony Stark in the lead role.
07:36Certainly not going to thank Warner Brothers, Alan Horn, and my God, robbing off these guys.
07:42They needed me.
07:44Avatar was going to take us to the cleaners.
07:47If they didn't have me, we didn't have a shot, buddy.
07:49Number 14.
07:51Gina Davis.
07:5263rd Golden Globe Awards.
07:53While it only lasted one season, Gina Davis won a Golden Globe for her performance as the first female U.S. president in the ABC series Commander-in-Chief.
08:03Davis' speech commenced on an inspirational note, recalling how a little girl in attendance that night told her that she wanted to be president someday.
08:10There was a little girl, maybe 8 or 10, in her first party dress, and she said, you know, because of you, I want to be president someday.
08:19And it was all thanks to Davis' performance.
08:25Just as the room filled with applause and audible awes, Davis swiped the rug out from under everyone.
08:30She totally made that story up.
08:32And I just, well, that didn't actually happen.
08:39Suddenly, the most touching moment of the night shifted to one of the funniest.
08:42This speech alone should have gotten Davis' show another season.
08:46Alas, we were deprived of more episodes and speeches like this one.
08:50Or somewhere, there could have been a little girl tugging at my dress.
08:54And were that, to be the case, then all of this would be worth it.
09:00I so want to thank for just that one little girl.
09:05Number 13.
09:06Ricky Gervais.
09:0761st Golden Globe Awards.
09:09Years before he was invited to host the Golden Globes, Ricky Gervais shared in a victory for the U.K. version of The Office.
09:16It was an early taste of the sardonic wit that Gervais would bring to future ceremonies.
09:21I can't remember what they told me to thank people.
09:24I said, we're not going to win anyway.
09:25Um, what?
09:27Hollywood Foreign Press.
09:29The comedian wasn't quite as savage here, however.
09:31He came off more like a fish out of water.
09:33Not only because Gervais wasn't expecting to win, but because he was still relatively new to American audiences at the time.
09:40For yanks unfamiliar with the Brits, Gervais noted that his country used to run the world before the States.
09:45I'm not from these parts.
09:50From a little place called England.
09:52We used to run the world before you.
09:55Tame compared to some of the jokes he'd make in later years, but Gervais was still the funniest person in the room.
10:01Um, thank you so much.
10:03Thank you to BBC America and, uh, uh, and everyone here.
10:08Oh, thank you.
10:09Goodbye.
10:09From one office boss to another, Steve Carell found himself in the same position as Gervais just two years later.
10:20Winning for his performance as Michael Scott, Carell said that he didn't write anything in preparation, but his wife, Nancy Walls, did.
10:27I would also like to thank my wife, Nancy, for her constant support and for being so beautiful tonight.
10:36That's true.
10:37Nancy was naturally thanked more than once in the speech, eventually getting a little too personal.
10:43Carell discussed how their children were brought into this world and suggested that his career aspirations might have eclipsed his wife's own life.
10:50Nancy, my precious wife, who put her career on hold in support of mine, and who sometimes wishes that I would let her know when I'm going to be home late so she can schedule her life, which is no less important than mine.
11:03It ultimately ends on a sweet note, although we are curious if Walls actually wrote everything Carell read.
11:10Either way, we have no doubt that their marriage is one full of love and laughs, much like this speech.
11:16To my parents for not making me go to law school, and finally, to the love of my life, my wife, Nancy.
11:25Number 11, Sacha Baron Cohen, 64th Golden Globe Awards.
11:30By early 2007, we all knew who Borat was, but Sacha Baron Cohen hadn't made many public appearances out of character.
11:38His win at the Golden Globes gave audiences a chance to see the real man behind Borat.
11:43That doesn't mean Cohen was about to get serious on us.
11:45And I stared down and saw your two wrinkled Golden Globes on my chin.
11:56I thought to myself, I'd better win a bloody award for this.
12:02While he thanked a handful of individuals, Cohen spent much of the speech talking about his infamous nude wrestling match with co-star Ken Davidian.
12:09And then when my 300-pound co-star decided to sit on my face and squeeze the oxygen from my lungs, I was faced with a choice.
12:21Death or to breathe in the air.
12:26Going into graphic detail, Cohen declared that he deserved an award for getting so up close and personal with Davidian's Golden Globes.
12:34The sacrifices artists make for their craft.
12:37Before being played off, Cohen got in a few more thank yous.
12:40Especially to those who hadn't sued him.
12:56The creator and star of 30 Rock gave a lesson in self-confidence when she collected the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy Series.
13:06I want to say thank you to the Hollywood Foreign Press.
13:09I've always loved the Hollywood Foreign Press.
13:12As a kid, I had all the Hollywood Foreign Press action figures.
13:15After taking a fun poke at what was then known as the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents the awards,
13:21Tina Fey thanks the usual suspects.
13:23Her husband receives a mention, of course, but only after a few noteworthy others.
13:27If you ever start to feel too good about yourself, they have this thing called the internet.
13:34And you can find a lot of people there who don't like you.
13:39Fey decides to use her time at the mic to send a message to all her online haters.
13:43There are even a few she mentions by name.
13:46Diane fan, you can suck it.
13:48Cougar letter, you can really suck it because it's all year you've been after me, all year.
13:52Now this is the kind of name-dropping we'd like to see more of at award shows.
13:57Number 9.
13:58Jennifer Lawrence, 70th Golden Globe Awards.
14:01Oh, what does it say?
14:03I beat Meryl.
14:07When the Silver Linings Playbook actress won the Globe over legendary actress and perennial award winner Meryl Streep,
14:13she proudly told the audience,
14:15I beat Meryl.
14:17This didn't go over well with some viewers.
14:19Lindsay Lohan herself was one of many tweeting at this young upstart who was sullying the good name of a Hollywood legend.
14:25But those in the know realized it was a tongue-in-cheek reference to a line of dialogue from the first Wives Club.
14:31You know what it says?
14:32It says, I beat Meryl.
14:33Lawrence brought her usual awkward banter and self-deprecating sense of humor to the stage when she collected the award.
14:39And I want to thank my brothers, Ben and Blaine.
14:41I wouldn't be who I am today without you being mean to me, but then really supportive and loving constantly.
14:49Number 8.
14:50Taraji P. Henson, 73rd Golden Globe Awards.
14:54If there's one thing you're not gonna do, it's step on Taraji P. Henson's train.
14:58Someone learned that the hard way when she won her Golden Globe.
15:01If you haven't, get on my train.
15:05Cookies for everyone tonight.
15:06The Empire actress was working the room all the way up to the podium.
15:10But once she got there, she was determined to give her entire speech.
15:14Who knew that playing an ex-convict would take me all around the globe?
15:20So when that little message flashed on the screen telling her to hurry up, Henson was not having it at all.
15:26She let the producers and everyone in charge know that after 20 years of waiting, she was going to have her time at the mic.
15:33So many people are like, please rap, wait a minute, I've waited 20 years for this, you're gonna wait?
15:40Yeah, you're gonna give me a little more time.
15:42I think, yeah, my fans, they've been praying for this.
15:46They're all on Twitter like, yeah, yeah, hope you get it.
15:49You gotta give me time.
15:50Number 7.
15:51Jim Carrey, 56th Golden Globe Awards.
15:54He may be one of Hollywood's funniest actors, but at the 1999 Golden Globes, Jim Carrey was the big winner for Best Actor in a Drama.
16:02This is serious.
16:06It's gonna be so hard to talk out of my a** after this.
16:14But I'll manage.
16:16I'll manage.
16:17Recognized for his work in The Truman Show, Carrey balances his usual rambunctious wit with a promise to be a bit more serious.
16:24It somehow makes his speech even funnier.
16:26You know what this means, don't you?
16:28I'm a shoo-in for the Blockbuster Award.
16:30He manages to poke fun at his own career, as his filmography up to that point doesn't necessarily scream award-winning actor.
16:41Carrey also takes a few good-hearted pot shots at the Golden Globe ceremony itself, while still maintaining a genuine appreciation for winning it.
16:48And the Academy.
16:50No, I mean...
16:50I'm sorry, I was thinking of something else.
16:55Number 6.
16:57Jack Nicholson, 60th Golden Globe Awards.
17:00Upon receiving his award for Best Actor in a Drama for About Schmidt, the acclaimed actor expresses some confusion at the movie's classification as a drama.
17:08Well, I don't know whether to be happy or ashamed, because I thought we made a comedy.
17:13Regardless, he plows on with thanks for his fellow castmates.
17:16His mocking speech has the entire room, including his co-stars, in uproarious laughter the entire time.
17:22He had the Bates Motel, Kathy.
17:27June Squibb, who played my wife, Dermot Mulroney.
17:33His haircut alone, should have let you know it was a comedy, I thought.
17:37It's a bonkers moment that only the acting veteran could deliver so winningly.
17:42But it's his candid confession as he prepares to leave the stage that really brings the house down.
17:47I know the evening's getting short. I took a Valium tonight, so...
17:56Number 5.
17:59Hugh Grant, 52nd Golden Globe Awards.
18:02For some reason, everything just sounds more charming with an English accent.
18:06I can't tell you, Foreign Press Association, how much I admire you.
18:09And it's with tremendous ill grace that I grudgingly acknowledge the contribution of a few other people.
18:21As the best actor winner for four weddings and a funeral, Hugh Grant isn't afraid to say how elated he is to win his Golden Globe.
18:28In fact, he's practically rhapsodic about how it feels to win any award at all.
18:32You're not really, you're supposed to think that, you know, awards are invidious and things like that.
18:38But I think they're heaven, and this is right up my alley.
18:44Playing up his dashing persona with a few sarcastic, backhanded compliments at his director, writer, and co-stars.
18:51Grant is like a comedian doing a tight five.
18:53The place looks more like a comedy club than an award show by the time he was through with it.
18:57And my girlfriend, Elizabeth Hurley, who put up with easily the nastiest, most ill-tempered, prima donna-ish actor in English cinema for six weeks.
19:09And then came back to me, which was really nice.
19:12Number 4. Jennifer Coolidge. 80th Golden Globe Awards.
19:16Picking up an award for The White Lotus, the beloved character actress gives a delightful speech in her characteristically airy style.
19:23It's equal parts emotional and completely bizarre in a way only Jennifer Coolidge can deliver.
19:29Her natural comedy chops are on full display.
19:32The hook came out at the last thing I got no word at.
19:35You know, this giant hook.
19:36I thought it left when vaudeville ended.
19:39But this hook came out and took me off the stage at the Emmys.
19:42And I didn't get to say what I really wanted to say.
19:44Dropping obscenities and hilarious anecdotes at a breakneck pace, Coolidge is switching gears throughout.
19:50She punctuates heartfelt thanks to White Lotus creator Mike White with dazzling non-sequiturs about wanting to be Queen of Monaco and her gratitude that her neighbors finally speak to her.
20:00I mean it. None of those people.
20:02I was never invited to one party on my hill.
20:04And now everyone's inviting me.
20:06Let's nominate her every year, please.
20:08It doesn't matter if she's in something.
20:10He really is one of the greatest people I've ever met.
20:13I mean, he gives me so much excitement to be.
20:16You make people want to live longer.
20:18And I didn't.
20:18So anyway.
20:19Number 3
20:20Robin Williams and Christine Lottie
20:2255th Golden Globe Awards
20:25The late, great funny man hadn't actually won the Golden Globe this year.
20:29When Christine Lottie wins the award for Chicago Hope, Robin Williams sees an opportunity to entertain the people.
20:35And he takes it.
20:36Christine Lottie
20:38Lottie, who had just won the best actress in a drama series Golden Globe, is in the bathroom.
20:48Williams vamps with a few jokes before Lottie finally arrives.
20:52She carries off her embarrassment beautifully, getting a few zingers in herself.
20:57I've always felt that the contest part of this, the having to choose winners and losers part of this whole Golden Globe thing, it always felt really absurd to me.
21:08Williams' expert skills at working a crowd and their incredible bit with a hand towel make it one of the most memorable and hysterical acceptance speeches of all time.
21:22Oh my god.
21:23You know, I was in the bathroom, mom.
21:27Oh my god.
21:28Oh my god.
21:32Number 2
21:33Emma Thompson, 53rd Golden Globe Awards
21:364 a.m. having just returned from an evening at the Golden Spheres, which despite the inconveniences of heat, noise and overcrowding, was not without its pleasures.
21:47Winning the best screenplay award for Sense and Sensibility, Emma Thompson decides to pay tribute to the famed writer of the original novel.
21:54Adopting an elegant, haughty accent, she dresses her thanks in a pithy statement written from the point of view of long-dead author Jane Austen.
22:02The room was full of interesting activity until 11 p.m. when it emptied rather suddenly.
22:07The lateness of the hour is due therefore not to the dance, but to the waiting in a long line for a horseless carriage of unconscionable size.
22:16The modern world has clearly done nothing for transport.
22:19Her musings about the night as if she were some perplexed time traveler from the 18th century are a fun twist on the standard acceptance speech.
22:27In Austen's voice, she gives begrudging compliments to her co-stars and various celebrities present, and takes a final withering shot at herself, even getting her own name wrong.

23:04Number 1, Bette Midler, 37th Golden Globe Awards.
23:08I'm different now. I'm a good girl. I don't swear anymore on stage. I swear I don't swear anymore on stage.
23:15Before she was the grande dame, she was a nightclub act who made it big.
23:19Bette Midler had recently made her explosive film debut in The Rose after years of risque concerts and TV appearances.
23:26Winning two Golden Globes for her first film performance, Midler just can't help herself.
23:31She insists she's a good girl now that she's been accepted by the prestigious Hollywood establishment.
23:39But between a devastatingly dirty pun about her own pair of Golden Globes and miming a lewd act with the statuette,
23:46she shows stardom hasn't changed her at all.
23:49I reminded when Joan Crawford actually won her Golden Globe and she said,
23:54I can't do it. I can't. I have to be tasteful. They told me I was supposed to be.
23:59She said, I'll show you a pair of Golden Globes.
24:05What do you think was the funniest Golden Globes acceptance speech? Let us know in the comments.
