Kadeem Hardison chats with THR and talks about seeing the cross-generational legacy of 'A Different World' on the BET Awards carpet. Plus, he shares his favorite line from Kendrick Lamar's "Not Like Us."
00:00First of all, I am so inspired by your character, DeWayne, all these years later.
00:07And so what does that mean for you to know that generations after generations are still loving the work that you guys do on A Different World?
00:15It's unbelievable that the age range of people who enjoy this show still, who have found it and relate to it.
00:25I knew we did something good after we got off, when we were on.
00:30I didn't know. I was like, you know, we're just trying to do our best.
00:34But once we finished, I saw the void.
00:37And the fact that you and people of your age, younger and older, gravitate to it, it proves just how good it was, how well it was written, how well it was thought out, planned, and performed.
00:50And you come from a creative background. Your mom, Beth Payne, fashionista.
00:54So when it comes to that creativity that you always have been around, how were you inspired by that, and how did you use that in your own creative ventures?
01:03Wow, my mother, she taught me how to dress and taught me how to have a little bit of style, and I learned to listen first.
01:12You learn a lot more by listening than you do by talking. I learned that.
01:16And so, yes, I took that, and I tried to apply it everywhere I could.
01:22And any favorite behind-the-scenes moments that you can share when it comes to a different world?
01:27Because I see you guys are all here tonight.
01:29So, obviously, you're still in touch. You're still connected.
01:32So what is it like kind of reuniting with everyone?
01:34We always have a ball whenever we get together. It's like yesterday. It's like 1991, all over again.
01:41We love to see each other. We love to hang out. We all make each other laugh.
01:47There are way too many behind-the-scenes moments for me to pick out or even remember just one.
01:53It was like a college experience. We never got crazy drunk and remember that, but it was as close to college as I ever got.
02:05Okay, so my last question for you is, what does They Not Like Us mean to you?
02:11Sometimes you got to pop out and show.
02:14To me, that's my favorite line in the whole joint.
02:17Because even if you're down, even if you're underdog, even if you've been written off, sometimes you got to pop out and show it.
