Liev Schreiber chats with THR on the red carpet of the 2024 Tony Awards and talks about being hesitant at first to take on his role in 'Doubt: a Parable.'
Transcript
00:00I heard that you were hesitant to take on this role at first.
00:03So what made you want to say yes at the end of the day?
00:06Well, it was just that I feel like I'm, you know, between Marty Baron and Spotlight and Ray Donovan,
00:12I felt like I'd done enough kicking of the Catholic Church.
00:17But I went to a mass in my little town in Montauk, and I was very moved by it.
00:24And I spoke to Scott Ellis about it, and he said, you know,
00:27it's 20 years later, this play means something different.
00:32And when I read it again, thinking about that, you know, what if he didn't do it?
00:36What if this play is really speaking to the situation we've got ourselves into
00:42with cancel culture and polarization and how pulled apart as a society and a culture we feel right now
00:52and approaching the play with Scott and Amy and Quincy and Zoe with that idea in mind was just super exciting.
01:02And I know working so closely with Amy, what was it like collaborating with her on this,
01:06especially because she had to take on the role at the last minute?
01:09It was terrifying.
01:10She had her script laid out on the desk and monitors up in the balcony that she was looking at.
01:18And every once in a while, I would look up at the monitors, and it would have the exact opposite effect on me.
01:23I would go completely blank, and I'd forget my lines.
01:26But she has such tenacity and commitment as an actress.
01:31And I was so impressed with the boldness of her choices and where it let us take the play.
01:40And finally, what's a show on or off-Broadway, outside of your own right now, that's your favorite of the season?
01:46I had a lot of fun at Patriots.
01:48You know, as someone who cares deeply about Ukraine, I was very grateful to hear such a simple and clear telling
02:00of the Berezovsky story and of Putin's rise to power.
02:04I think it's really important that people understand that.
02:06Thank you so much for stopping by. Have fun tonight.
