'The Idea of You' Director Michael Showalter Talks Harry Styles Comparisons

Director Michael Showalter chats with THR on the red carpet for 'The Idea of You' and reveals why Nicholas Galitzine and Anne Hathaway were perfect leads for this film. Plus, he touches on those Harry Styles comparisons.

00:00Well, congratulations. What is it like to finally be able to put this film out there into the world?

00:04Very exciting. Very exciting. We've worked on it for a long time. We're really proud of it.

00:09We had a great time making the movie and plays really well in front of an audience, in front of people.

00:15So we're excited to let the whole world hopefully see and enjoy the film.

00:20What would you say makes Anne and Nicholas the perfect leads for this movie?

00:24They're both very genuine people, and I think that comes through.

00:30There's an authenticity to their performances. You see two real human souls up there.

00:38We tried to tell a story about two people and make you really believe that these people are real and having these experiences.

00:46I think Anne and Nick both portray that beautifully.

00:50Anne had previously talked about how Nicholas nailed the chemistry read.

00:53And you were in that room, too. So what was it that you saw that made you go, OK, that's our guy?

00:58He's confident. He's confident, but he's not cocky.

01:03He's funny. He's charming. He's great looking. He's a great musician. He's a great actor.

01:10But he's also very open and he's very nimble.

01:12And so all of those qualities together, we could just tell they would be a great pair.

01:17I know a lot of people have been making comparisons between Hayes Campbell and Harry Styles.

01:21What do you make of all those comparisons?

01:23I think there's comparisons there to be made.

01:26There's comparisons with lots of public figures, but I think Hayes touches a nerve.

01:31There's a feeling about this character and these two characters that I feel like is something that's very current in our society right now,

01:38whether it's Harry Styles or a whole bunch of other interesting public figures that we could mention.

01:43And I just think that's part of what's great about this story. It certainly drew me in.

01:47And finally, I know everyone has a version of August Moon for themselves.

01:52Who is that for you? Who is a band or an artist?

01:54For me, it's a new edition.

01:56Yes, Candy Girl.

01:58Candy Girl, you're on my world.

02:02I need you loving each and every day.

02:06Okay, so that's mine.

02:08Amazing.

02:09And that was your inspiration to say, and everyone do that on stage for August Moon, right?

02:13Absolutely, yes.
