A large convoy of more than 80 fuel tankers arrived in Bamako on Sunday, after a nearly 1,400-kilometre journey from Niger. The delivery aims to ease the severe fuel shortages Mali has faced in recent weeks.
Footage shows the tankers arriving in the capital while being escorted by AES military forces.
"Our friend, colleague, and collaborator, the President of Niger, has offered us 82 tankers of diesel and petrol. This gesture shows that Mali's problem is also Niger's problem," Mali's Industry and Trade Minister Moussa Alassane Diallo said.
The fuel will now be dispatched to stations across Bamako and other high-priority areas, with particular focus on public services, transportation, and power generators.
The delivery is part of the Sahel Alliance (AES) countries' push toward self-sufficiency and economic solidarity.
According to local media, fuel prices in Bamako have surged over 500 percent due to the blockade, rising from $25 to $130 per litre. Electricity availability has also fallen from 19 to six hours daily in several urban areas, causing widespread disruption.
It comes after JNIM militants reportedly escalated attacks and blocked fuel convoys from neighbouring countries, causing shortages and disruptions to transport and essential services.
